    • Is it worth investing in expensive running shoes? Both beginners and experienced runners should consider individual needs and preferences when choosing running shoes, with the understanding that more expensive options may offer better support and durability.

Whether you're a beginner runner looking to start your weight loss journey with the Couch to 5k app or a seasoned marathon runner like Beth, choosing the right running shoes is an essential decision. For those who are unsure about the value of their current running shoes or considering an upgrade, the BBC investigates the question posed by listener Mike Taylor. Mike wanted to know if it's worth investing in more expensive running shoes, as his current pair costs only £40. Beth, another listener, completed the London Marathon and is now preparing for the Great North Run. She's curious if she's getting the best value for her money with her current running shoes. The BBC acknowledges the vast array of running shoes available, ranging from budget options to high-end models, and the importance of making an informed decision based on individual needs and preferences. Stay tuned for the BBC's investigation into the world of running shoes and the evidence behind their claims.

    • Nike Vaporfly and Alphafly: Worth the Investment?Nike Vaporfly and Alphafly shoes, with special foam and carbon fiber plate, can improve running economy by an average of 4% and have been linked to numerous marathon major podium finishes. Scientists' insights can help determine if the investment is worth it for individuals seeking new personal bests or wanting to upgrade from mid-range shoes.

The discussion revolved around the question of whether it's worth the investment to upgrade from mid-range running shoes to more expensive options, specifically the Nike Vaporfly and Alphafly models. These shoes, which feature a special foam and carbon fiber plate, have been reported to improve running economy by an average of 4%. They gained significant attention in 2018 when they were worn by numerous marathon major podium finishers, and the media splash reached a peak in 2019 when Eliud Kipchoge broke the two-hour marathon barrier wearing the Nike Alphafly Next%. Beth was interested in whether these current iterations could help her achieve a new personal best, while Mike wanted to know if the upgrade from his £120 shoes was worth it. To answer these questions, we will be speaking with two scientists whose research can provide insights into the performance benefits of these shoes. The Nike brand, named after the ancient Greek goddess of victory, has been making waves in the running community with these innovative shoe designs.

    • Finding the right running shoe for your unique gait is crucialUnderstanding your gait and finding shoes with appropriate cushioning and support can prevent injuries and improve performance.

Finding the right running shoe for your unique running gait is crucial for injury prevention and optimal performance. Wearing a heavy pair of shoes might not be ideal for everyone, but if it works for you and you're not experiencing any injuries, then sticking with it could be the best choice. However, if you're trying to decide which shoe to buy, getting your gait analyzed can help ensure a good fit. Cushioning and understanding pronation are key elements in injury prevention and the development of effective running shoes. Despite the importance of injury prevention, it's important to note that the science behind it is still evolving. Biomechanists, like Dr. Hannah Reiss from the Norwegian School of Sports Science, study how people walk and run to understand injury risk. They look at various aspects of shoe design, such as cushioning and support, to help prevent injuries. Ultimately, finding the right running shoe for your individual gait can make a significant difference in your running experience and overall health.

    • The impact of shoe design on injury risk and performance during running is debatedScientific evidence does not universally support the idea that a specific shoe design reduces injury risk or improves performance, personal preference, comfort, and budget play a bigger role in choosing a running shoe.

The belief that a shoe specifically designed for your gait or with more cushioning will significantly reduce your injury risk or improve your performance during running is not universally supported by scientific evidence. A study from the Benno Nigmslag Lab in Calgary suggests that a person's skeleton follows a particular path during running, and shoe or insole manipulations have minimal impact on this. While more cushioning might not necessarily be harmful, it doesn't guarantee injury prevention or performance enhancement. As for super shoes with carbon plates and other advanced technologies, their impact on injury risk and performance is still a subject of ongoing research and individual experience may vary. Ultimately, choosing a running shoe comes down to personal preference, comfort, and budget.

    • Carbon plate shoes enhance running performance at high speedsCarbon plate shoes reduce energy loss during foot strike and increase propulsive forces, providing a significant advantage for serious runners.

Carbon plate running shoes can boost the performance of athletes, particularly at high speeds. This is due to the reduction in energy loss during the foot strike and the increased propulsive forces from the carbon plate. However, it's important to note that measuring the difference in performance between different types of running shoes can be challenging due to various external factors such as sleep, nutrition, training, and weather conditions. Despite these challenges, scientific studies and world record improvements suggest that carbon plate shoes provide a statistically and functionally significant advantage for serious runners.

    • Investing in a high-priced running shoeSerious runners benefit from superior comfort and durability in expensive shoes, while recreational runners can get by with less expensive options. Advanced technologies may improve performance and reduce injury risk, but their relevance varies for each athlete.

While the debate continues about the extent to which expensive running shoes with advanced technologies, such as carbon fiber plates, can improve performance and reduce injury risk for individual athletes, the consensus among experts is that there is value in investing in a higher-priced shoe if you're a serious runner looking for superior comfort and durability. For recreational runners who aren't focused on maximizing speed, the experts agree that less expensive shoes are sufficient. However, the biomechanics of running and the role of shoes in optimizing gait and reducing injury risk are complex, and the jury is still out on the functional relevance of these advanced technologies for every athlete. The evidence suggests that shoes can indeed change the way power is produced at the ankle and toe joint, leading to performance benefits, but the degree of improvement varies from person to person. Ultimately, the decision to invest in a more expensive running shoe comes down to personal goals, budget, and individual needs.

    • Super shoes vs regular shoes for trainingSuper shoes offer race day benefits, but regular shoes are best for daily training to maintain fitness and health benefits.

While super shoes with carbon plates and advanced foam or pads can enhance running economy and potentially help runners run further and faster, they may not provide the same fitness or health benefits as training in regular running shoes. These super shoes are best saved for race day and not used for daily training to maximize their value and maintain the intended training stimulus. Additionally, paying more for running shoes generally means getting more durable materials, cushioning, and ankle support, which can contribute to greater comfort and enjoyment during runs.

    Cholesterol Lowering Products

Can fortified drinks and spreads really reduce cholesterol?

Almost half of UK adults have raised cholesterol, according to the charity Heart UK - and Sliced Bread listener Cathy is one of them. She found out after taking a test at her GP and wants to do something about it. Her first plan of action is to make changes to her lifestyle, such as diet and exercise. As part of that, Cathy wants to know if the spreads and drinks that claim to lower cholesterol really do work.

Greg Foot is joined by Cathy and a panel of experts at our studios in Salford to investigate. What are the ingredients that are proven to lower cholesterol? How effective are they compared to widely-prescribed statins - and are the supermarket own brand versions of these drinks and spreads just as good as branded ones?

All of the ideas for our investigations come from you, our listeners, and we're always on the lookout for more. Acupressure Mats

    Acupressure Mats

Twelve year old Bradley got in touch with Sliced Bread after trying out his mum Jennifer’s acupressure mat. Jennifer says she swears by it, it relaxes her, and she even falls asleep on it! But after testing it out himself, he was less than convinced.

He asked us to find out what these mats are meant to do, whether they work or if they’re a placebo effect, and whether paying more for one could mean better results? Joining Greg in the studio to discuss them, is Clinical Acupuncturist Phil Trubshaw from the Manchester Movement Unit based at Manchester Metropolitan University, as well as the Director of Research at the Northern College of Acupuncture, Dr. Karen Charlesworth.

    Pest Control

    Pest Control

What's the best - and most humane - way to get rid of pests?

For some of us Tom and Jerry might be the sum total of our knowledge of the struggle between domestic life and unwanted rodents. But for listeners Colin and Mary, things are getting much more real! Colin wants to know if the plug-in devices he's seen that promise to deter rats and mice using ultrasonic actually work. Mary has caught mice and then released them back into the wild in nearby woodland, believing it's the more humane way to deal with the problem. But is it?

With the help of Natalie Bungay from the British Pest Control Association and Rob Young, Professor of Wildlife Conservation at the University of Salford, Greg Foot sets out to find the answers, hoping to nibble at the metaphorical cheese without getting caught in the figurative trap (or something).

    Car Tyres

Is it worth paying more for premium car tyres?

There's a huge range of car tyres to choose from and the price differences between them can be significant. So do you really need to pay more to get a good tyre?

Listener Ian runs a car maintenance business and wants to know if the budget tyres he's been fitting are the right choice. Will they last as long and be just as safe? What do the different ratings on the labels you can see online mean? And as he moves towards electric cars he's also keen to know whether they need a special sort of tyre.

With the help of two experts in the field, Greg Foot 'treads' through the studies and the science to find out more. It's how he rolls (we'll stop now).

Episode 285: Offseason - Foundation, Skills, and Technique (Part 3 - Your Questions Answered)

Welcome to the final installment of our three-part series on the off-season, in which we frame the approach to building a foundation of performance, developing skills, and improving technique.

This week’s episode centers on you and the questions you have about Q4 and beyond. Matt shares the questions you’ve sent in over the past few weeks on how to connect the information from our previous episodes on the off-season to your own performance journey.

During our three-part conversation about the off-season, we discussed the various elements and significance of this training phase. This included insights on rejuvenation, mindset, and strategies to ensure that the next 2-3 months serve as a catalyst for improving our future selves while still allowing for enjoyment and flexibility. We also shared the Purple Patch approach and exciting details about specific plans for the upcoming block of training.

Although we have focused on season planning and triathlete journeys, we have received numerous questions from individuals who are not competing athletically. These questions pertain to health and overall life performance. Whether you are an athlete seeking to establish a foundation of performance prior to intensifying your training, or a fitness enthusiast aiming to maximize your winter months, Matt offers guidance to help you gain clarity and set yourself up for success in both work and life in the coming year.

Whether you're in Alaska or Hawaii, Detroit or Singapore, off-season is a key part, a fundamental part of your year. And in fact, I would say it is the highest predictor of creating a wonderful performance breakthrough no matter what your goal is in the months ahead. It's easier. You have more capacity. You take a step back, but it's so that you can take 10 steps forward. And by not doing that you're going to run into problems. - Matt Dixon
