He moved back to London with his young family from the countryside, leaving an empty house in Wiltshire. Graham expressed gratitude for the fortunate circumstances of having his parents living in Hong Kong, allowing them to stay in a nicer house. He has an 18-month-old daughter and shared that having one child during the lockdown has been less stressful than having more, especially dealing with the challenges of homeschooling and the toddler age. Despite the emotional challenges of being a single parent, Graham acknowledged the privileges of having a lovely home and being self-employed during the pandemic. Overall, Graham's interview highlighted the unique experiences and challenges of parenthood during the lockdown, emphasizing the importance of finding positivity in unexpected circumstances.

    • Navigating Co-Parenting During a PandemicDespite the challenges of a global pandemic, Ivo and his ex-partner found a solution that allowed them to effectively co-parent by separating their living spaces.

Despite the best intentions and amicable co-parenting efforts during the holiday season, the unexpected global pandemic forced a change in living arrangements for Ivo, leading to a new challenge in their co-parenting journey. Initially, Ivo was living with friends, but the impending birth of their child put a time limit on his stay. Faced with the stress of potential co-parenting loopholes and the uncertainty of the pandemic's impact, Ivo and his ex-partner made the difficult decision to move to the countryside and separate their living spaces. Although it was a difficult decision, they found that having an empty house for each parent provided a sense of closure and allowed them to focus on their individual lives while effectively co-parenting.

    • Navigating the Challenges of LockdownPeople adapted to lockdown's challenges through humor, finding joy in simple pleasures, and balancing individual and family time.

The initial weeks of lockdown brought about unique challenges and stressors for individuals and families. People were faced with uncertainty and fear, leading to panic buying and rumors of closed roads. Some families, like Ivo's, had to adapt quickly to unexpected circumstances, such as a lack of heating or essential items. Despite these challenges, many found ways to make the most of their situation, whether it was through humor on social media or finding joy in simple pleasures like a garden during an April heatwave. Overall, the experience of lockdown was emotionally confusing but ultimately a "real win" for those who were able to find a balance between individual and family time. This balance often involved dividing responsibilities and making time for emotional independence.

    • Balancing Work and Family During LockdownThe speaker values time with his daughter but finds it challenging to balance parenting responsibilities with self-employed work, admitting his daughter had to be 'solidly mediocre company' for him to focus. He also discusses emotional impact of living apart from family and importance of being present.

The speaker values the time spent with his young daughter during the lockdown, but finds it challenging to balance parenting responsibilities with his self-employed work. He admits that his daughter had to be "solidly mediocre company" for him to focus on his tasks. The speaker also mentions the emotional impact of living apart from his family for a month and how it made him appreciate the importance of being present in his daughter's life. He also acknowledges the challenges of living and parenting around one flat while being separated from his partner. Overall, the speaker expresses a deep appreciation for the time spent with his daughter during the lockdown, but recognizes the difficulties that come with balancing work and family life.

    • Navigating the complexities of single parenthoodSingle parenthood brings unexpected challenges, including coordinating schedules and preparing for emergencies. Prioritize the child's needs and maintain flexibility to overcome these hurdles.

Being a single parent comes with unexpected challenges, especially when it comes to sharing living spaces and responsibilities. For instance, coordinating schedules for childcare and work can be complex, leading to late-night car rides or uncomfortable sleeping arrangements. Additionally, being prepared for emergencies, such as forgetting keys or having a malfunctioning baby seat, can add to the stress. It's important to remember that these situations are common for new parents and require flexibility, adaptability, and a good sense of humor. Furthermore, it's crucial to prioritize the child's needs and well-being above all else, even if it means making sacrifices or experiencing inconveniences. Overall, the journey of single parenthood is filled with unexpected twists and turns, but with the right mindset and resources, it can also be an incredibly rewarding experience.

    • Parenting during lockdown: A bonding experienceFocusing on their child's well-being brought parents closer together during lockdown, creating a rewarding experience with new milestones and discoveries.

Despite the challenges of co-parenting during lockdown, focusing on the well-being of their child brought the parents closer together. The experience of raising their daughter during this time has been rewarding, with new milestones and discoveries making each day exciting. Although they are not a couple in the traditional sense, they have found that parenting decisions have been relatively simple, and they have similar approaches. However, as their child grows older, more complex decisions will arise, potentially leading to differences in opinion. The speaker reflects on his own upbringing and the impact of attending boarding school, acknowledging the potential for negative political associations. Overall, the shared experience of parenting has provided a source of comfort and reassurance during an uncertain time.

    • Growing Up and Its Impact on Parenting and ComedyExploring personal experiences in boarding schools shaped perspectives on emotional support, discipline, and authenticity in comedy and parenting. The discussion revolved around the experiences of growing up, particularly in boarding schools, and the impact it has on parenting and performing comedy. The speakers shared their personal experiences and perspectives, raising questions about the importance of emotional support, the balance between discipline and flexibility, and the challenges of being open and authentic in their work. They also touched upon the unique circumstances of navigating personal and familial relationships during a pandemic, and the creative opportunities that come with introspection and self-reflection. Co-parenting during a pandemic can be a challenging experience, filled with logistical difficulties and a blurred line between being a couple and not being one. The speaker shared her personal experience of finding solace and reassurance in listening to podcasts, including this one, which provided different perspectives on parenting. She admitted to occasionally wearing one headphone while parenting early on, as a way to maintain some individual freedom. However, she acknowledged that this practice is not ideal and is not something she does as much anymore now that her child has grown. The speaker also emphasized the importance of making decisions and sticking to them, even when it feels unnatural or counterintuitive, such as retiring to separate bedrooms during lockdown. Overall, the speaker found comfort in acknowledging the challenges of co-parenting during a pandemic and focusing on the positive aspects of her current situation.

    • The Impact of Upbringing and Parenting on People's LivesUpbringing and parenting significantly shape people's lives, with unique challenges and responsibilities. Prioritize the child's welfare and adapt, as the grass isn't always greener.

Upbringing and background, whether it's from a comprehensive or a prestigious school, significantly shape people's lives. Ivo's experience of co-parenting and dealing with his past was discussed in a recent podcast episode, and it highlighted how everyone's situation is unique. Parenting brings a huge responsibility and can impact every decision, making it essential to adapt and make the best of it. Ivo and Carrie's story showed that it's better to be grown-up about the situation and prioritize the child's welfare, rather than being a couple that hates each other in front of them. Additionally, the grass isn't always greener on the other side, as shown by Ivo's experience of living in a Ford Focus while attending Oxford University. Overall, the podcast episode was an honest and interesting exploration of the impact of upbringing and parenting on people's lives.

    # 140 - Living in a Narcissistic Family System - With Nisanka Wickramarachchi

    # 140 - Living in a Narcissistic Family System - With Nisanka Wickramarachchi

    INTRO

Nisanka Wickramarachchi helps parents who co-parent with narcissistic partners or exes to support their children consistently whilst preserving their sanity.

    WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT

Nisanka starts by telling us her story of growing up in Sri Lanka in a family where despite her parents providing a roof over her head, food, and all the practical things, she lacked love and support. Continually told that she was ungrateful when she tried to speak up.

She found it hard to understand that others outside of her immediate family were treated more kindly than she was.

This set up the ‘familiar’ pattern of believing that emotional abuse and narcissistic behaviour were normal. She found the courage to leave her partner with her daughter and a new life helping parents to co-parent with narcissistic partners.

    BIO

Back in 2017, I had two choices to make. I either stay alive and see my daughter grow up, or I choose to act on the suicidal thoughts. Many days were spent in a haze, unable to make that choice, until one day, I found myself hugging my daughter ‘goodbye’. Something in me screamed at me to go get help, which is what I did.

It was during that journey that I realised how much narcissistic abuse I had endured in my life.  I was born into a narcissistic family system. My culture glorified narcissistic behaviours. I kept attracting narcissistic people into my life in close dynamics such as friends, bosses, and romantic partners.

At one point, I felt like the damage was unfathomable. However, over time, with consistent actions to heal, my grief, disappointment, trauma, and negative core beliefs turned into creativity, empathy, courage and positive beliefs paving the way to a vibrant life.

Nisanka is a Life Coach and a Holistic Practitioner. She is also trained with the Counselling Academy to work with Narcissism. She is an advanced EFT and Matrix Reimprinting Practitioner. She is trained in NLP and DISC Personality Facilitation.
