    • Discovering Passions Through Unexpected CareersPeople's career paths can be unpredictable. It's okay to try different things and not have everything figured out right away. Finding joy and fulfillment often comes from unexpected places.

Sometimes, people end up in careers they didn't plan for due to various circumstances. This person, for instance, went to a less-ranked university and ended up in investment banking because they didn't know what they wanted to do and were pressured into it. They didn't enjoy it and later moved on to management consulting, but still felt unfulfilled. They eventually discovered the concept of financial independence and optimization, which led them to find jobs they enjoyed. It's important to note that everyone's journey is unique, and it's okay to not have everything figured out right away. Sometimes, it takes trying different things to find what truly aligns with our passions and goals. In the speaker's case, they didn't enjoy investment banking or management consulting, but they found joy in optimization and eventual career satisfaction.

    • Entry-level investment banking: Long hours, smart people, and challenging tasksGain valuable skills and insights from long hours analyzing data in investment banking, even if it may not be the right career fit for you

Investment banking involves supporting companies in financial transactions like mergers and acquisitions, and at entry-level positions, you may spend long hours analyzing data to determine fair prices. However, the experience can teach valuable skills like working with smart people and grinding through challenging tasks, even if the hierarchical nature of the job may limit opportunities for direct interaction with high-level decision-makers. The speaker's personal experience led them to leave investment banking for a management consulting job, where they could make PowerPoint presentations instead of spreadsheets but still learn and grow. Overall, the speaker gained valuable insights from their brief stint in investment banking, even if it wasn't the right fit for them.

    • Unexpected events can lead to new opportunitiesUnexpected job loss can spark creativity and lead to entrepreneurship, even in challenging circumstances

Unexpected events, such as getting fired, can lead to new opportunities if you're open to taking risks and being resourceful. The speaker's experience at a weekend startup event ignited a passion for entrepreneurship, which led him to move to San Francisco and eventually start his own conference, Laid Offcamp, for other unemployed individuals. Despite the challenges of being laid off and living in an expensive city, the speaker's determination and creativity led him to turn a difficult situation into a successful venture. The unexpected turn of events ultimately had a positive impact on his career and personal growth.

    • Starting a laid-off camp led to unexpected opportunitiesUnexpected experiences can lead to personal growth, new connections, and life-changing adventures

Unexpected opportunities can lead to life-changing experiences. The speaker shared her experience of starting a laid-off camp during the recession, which gained significant media attention. Although it didn't continue after the recession, it led her to meet new people and explore different career paths. She eventually found freelance jobs and then embarked on a 7-month backpacking trip around the world with her wife. This journey was inspired by the book "Vagabonding" and was significantly cheaper due to traveling by bus, train, and couch surfing. The experience was transformative and even led her to speak at South by Southwest about her journey. Through this story, we can see how taking risks and embracing the unexpected can lead to personal growth and new opportunities.

    • Exploring the World Without a PlanTraveling without a plan during your younger years can lead to unique experiences and comfort with the unknown. However, it's not for everyone and may impact a resume.

Traveling the world aimlessly for an extended period, particularly in your younger years, can be a unique and enriching experience. The speaker shares his own experience of staying in budget accommodations during his travels and how he feels less inclined to do so now that he has a family. He emphasizes that the younger you do it, the more comfortable you become with the grit and grime, and the more you can take advantage of spontaneous adventures. However, he acknowledges that there are elements of travel that can be done at any age, and not everyone may be able or want to travel without a plan. He also addresses the concern about the impact of taking a year off on a resume, suggesting that while it may raise some eyebrows, there are many who would be impressed and interested in what was learned during the trip. Overall, the speaker encourages considering taking a vagabonding trip before starting a family if that's something desired.

    • Discovering the Unique Paths to HappinessTraveling and experiencing different cultures, having fewer material possessions, and being open to new experiences can lead to greater happiness and contentment.

There are countless ways to find happiness and contentment in life, and people around the world have discovered their unique paths. Traveling and experiencing different cultures firsthand showed the speaker that there's no one-size-fits-all approach to life. Additionally, the less material possessions one has, the more content they seem to be. The speaker's journey also revealed that being open to new experiences and questioning the status quo can lead to discovering more efficient and fulfilling ways to live. Despite not having a clear-cut "eat, pray, love" moment, the experience broadened the speaker's perspective and encouraged them to embrace the idea that there's always room for improvement and optimization in life.

    • Discovering a community can lead to personal and professional growthAttending SXSW in its early days led the speaker to profound personal and professional growth by connecting with influential people in the tech industry

Finding and immersing oneself in a community can lead to profound personal and professional growth. The speaker shared an experience of attending South by Southwest (SXSW) in its early days, which was primarily known as a music festival but later evolved into an interactive technology conference. The speaker, who was new to the tech industry, found SXSW to be a unique opportunity to meet and connect with influential people in the industry. The experience was so impactful that it shaped the speaker's career for the next decade. The speaker also emphasized the importance of optimizing opportunities, as evidenced by their successful submission of a talk at SXSW, which led to valuable connections and insights. The experience of finding a community and immersing oneself in it can still be beneficial today, as Austin Kleon emphasizes in his work on creativity and building a meaningful career.

    • The importance of building a community for personal and professional growthAttend events, focus on high-impact interactions, and expand your network to unlock opportunities for growth

Building a strong community of like-minded individuals is invaluable in personal and professional growth. The speaker emphasized the importance of this network in his own experiences, from securing jobs to forming business relationships. He also emphasized the significance of attending emerging events and conferences to expand one's network and increase the chances of serendipitous interactions. These moments can lead to significant opportunities and changes in one's life or business. The speaker's advice is to focus on the potential high-impact interactions rather than the quantity of new acquaintances. Building a community and putting oneself out there can lead to unexpected and valuable outcomes.

    • Striking the Right Balance Between Focused Work and NetworkingBalance networking and focused work at conferences by setting up meetings, prioritizing time, and understanding the value of both.

While both focused work and networking at conferences are important, finding the right balance depends on individual circumstances. The speaker shares an analogy of flying business class and having hit-or-miss conversations, emphasizing the importance of persistence and the potential for high-ROI interactions. However, it's crucial not to overlook the value of dedicated work time, especially during critical stages of one's career or business. A humorous anecdote about creating a fake conference invitation illustrates the importance of balance and avoiding excessive conference-hopping. To make the most of a conference, consider emailing the organizers beforehand to set up meetings with specific attendees, and be intentional about scheduling and prioritizing your time.

    • Maximizing Conference Networking: Be Strategic and TacticalStudy speaker list, prepare conversations, engage with random and targeted individuals, initiate low-stakes conversations, ask for commitments in person, expand networking in various settings

Maximizing your networking opportunities at conferences involves being strategic and tactical. The speaker list is a valuable resource for identifying potential high-impact connections. Preparation is key, including studying attendees' photos and planning conversations. Engaging with both random and targeted individuals can lead to valuable interactions. Building the skill of initiating conversations in low-stakes environments can make conference networking easier. Asking for commitments in person is more effective than via email. Lastly, consider striking up conversations in various settings like planes, buses, or coffee shops. By being proactive, prepared, and confident, you can make the most of your conference experience and expand your professional network.

    • Embracing new experiences can lead to good fortuneBe open to new opportunities, evaluate them based on potential regret, and let authentic excitement drive your decisions for personal and professional growth

Being open to new experiences and opportunities, even if they come at the expense of comfort or routine, can lead to good fortune. This can mean attending conferences, talking to strangers, or taking risks in your career. The speaker shares an experience of convincing a company to hire him based on his enthusiasm and passion for their product, despite not having a clear plan or prior connections. This approach can lead to unexpected opportunities and growth. Additionally, the speaker suggests evaluating potential experiences by asking oneself if one is likely to regret missing out on them. The anecdote illustrates the power of authentic excitement and determination in achieving personal and professional goals.

    • Learning from a reputable companyJoining a well-known company can lead to valuable connections and skills, even during unsuccessful experiences.

Having the opportunity to work for a company with a strong reputation, even if it fails, can still provide valuable experiences and connections that last a lifetime. The speaker shares how joining a notable company led them to meet amazing people and learn various skills, ultimately leading them to new opportunities. The experience of working for Google, despite the large team and insignificant project, provided valuable insights into product development. Transitioning to venture capital allowed them to invest in and support startups, which proved to be an incredibly fascinating job. Though there were moments of doubt, the speaker ultimately believes they made the right choice and gained invaluable experience along the way. Some of the most successful investors aren't necessarily those who have built companies but rather those who truly enjoy investing.

    • The power of personal connectionsStaying in touch with people and maintaining personal connections can bring valuable perspectives and opportunities, regardless of experience or qualifications.

Having personal connections and staying in touch with people can bring significant value, even in professional settings. The speaker shared her experience of feeling like she wasn't qualified enough to advise larger companies due to her lack of experience running larger businesses. However, she later learned that being a passionate, smart, and invested individual can bring valuable perspectives to the table. The speaker also expressed her admiration for individuals like herself, who are good at staying in touch with people, and shared her wish for an app that could help manage communication with contacts more effectively. The importance of personal connections and staying in touch is a theme that has become increasingly valuable to her through her experiences in both business and content creation.

    • Exploring the value of private content sharingPrivate communication and content sharing can build relationships, stay connected, and share knowledge effectively.

Effective communication and sharing knowledge can be achieved through various means beyond traditional public platforms. The speaker shared his experience of discovering the value of recording and sharing private content with individuals, inspired by asynchronous communication and the desire to stay connected and share insights. He mentioned James Bechara's podcast, Below the Line, and Nick Gray's friend's newsletter as examples of private content sharing. The speaker encourages experimenting with different formats like Loom videos, audio notes, or written content to share valuable information with others, without feeling the need for high production quality. He also emphasized the importance of staying in touch by sharing research and recommendations, as seen in creating Google Docs of travel recommendations. Overall, the key takeaway is that private communication and content sharing can be a powerful and efficient way to build relationships, stay connected, and share knowledge.

    • Managing Messaging Apps: Prioritizing Responses and Finding ToolsEffectively manage messaging apps by prioritizing responses, finding tools to streamline the process, and respecting others' time. Consider using dedicated time, listener Q&A episodes, or advanced tools like text.com to manage a large volume of messages.

Effective management of messaging apps like WhatsApp and iMessage involves prioritizing responses and finding tools to streamline the process. The speaker shares that they use iMessage primarily on their computer and aim to keep their inbox at zero unread messages. However, they struggle with the constant influx of new messages and the pressure to respond in a timely fashion, leading to an infinite loop of responding. They also mention the importance of respecting others' time and not feeling obligated to reply immediately or every time. The speaker expresses their admiration for those who process messages irregularly and suggests implementing scalable solutions for managing a large volume of messages, such as listener Q&A episodes or setting aside dedicated time to respond. They also mention the importance of prioritizing responses and finding tools, like text.com, that can help manage multiple messaging services in one interface and offer advanced features for efficient communication.

    • Creative solutions for affordable travelSave money by prioritizing local experiences, maximizing rewards points, and thinking creatively to minimize expenses

It's possible to upgrade your lifestyle and travel experiences without spending a fortune. The speaker shared how they prioritized finding creative solutions to save money on expenses, such as hiring a local chef to cook meals instead of ordering delivery or going out to eat. They also emphasized the importance of maximizing rewards points and miles to fly business class for free. The key is to be willing to think outside the box and not be afraid to ask for help or take advantage of resources available to you. Ultimately, the goal is to have great experiences while minimizing expenses and saving more money.

    • Optimizing Travel Expenses: Building Relationships for SavingsBuilding relationships with airlines and hotels can lead to upgrades, free perks, and significant cost savings.

There are various ways to optimize travel expenses, particularly when it comes to booking flights and hotels. The speaker discussed the arbitrage opportunity in buying business class flights, which often costs 6 to 10 times more in dollars than the points required, but may not be worth the extra cost due to additional fees and perks like free checked bags and seat selection. Regarding hotel bookings, the speaker suggested emailing the hotel directly after booking to express excitement and build a relationship, which can potentially lead to upgrades, free breakfast, and other perks. Booking directly with the hotel instead of using intermediaries like Booking.com or TripAdvisor can increase the likelihood of receiving such perks, as hotels are able to build a relationship with guests and offer them exclusive deals. The speaker also mentioned that hotels sometimes offer lower prices through their own websites when contacted directly, allowing travelers to save up to 60% on their stay. Overall, the key takeaway is that taking the time to build a relationship with hotels and airlines can lead to significant cost savings and better travel experiences.

    • Considering Value in Travel and ChildcarePaying extra for desired features and quality in hotel rooms or opting for an au pair for childcare can offer cultural experiences and cost savings respectively.

Optimizing value and getting the best deal is important for some people when it comes to booking a hotel room or considering having an au pair for childcare. For the former, it might be worth it to pay a little extra for desired features and quality, while for the latter, having an au pair can offer cultural experiences and cost savings compared to other childcare options. The speaker shared personal experiences of having an au pair growing up and the positive impact it had on their life. Additionally, the speaker mentioned creating a Notion page for baby planning and sharing it with friends as a helpful resource. Overall, the discussion emphasized the importance of considering value, cultural experiences, and practical solutions when making decisions related to travel and childcare.

    • Sharing resources thoughtfully builds connectionsPersonalized recommendations and curated resources can strengthen relationships and simplify decision-making

Sharing personalized recommendations and resources with others in a thoughtful and intentional way can help build meaningful connections. This can be as simple as creating a Notion page or sending a personalized message, and it can be applied to various aspects of life such as restaurant recommendations or financial advice. By taking the time to curate and share resources, we can make others feel special and appreciated, while also simplifying their decision-making process. This approach can lead to stronger relationships and a more positive impact on others' lives. Additionally, the speaker's personal experience of being someone who is comfortable with managing money and sharing that knowledge with others led them to realize the importance of financial planning and the role of professional financial planners in helping people understand their financial situation and goals.

    • High costs and time commitment prevent many from financial planningYounger generations find financial planning too expensive and time-consuming, making it a low priority. Financial planning software is not widely available, making the process manual and time-consuming. Scaling customer acquisition is a challenge for financial planning businesses.

Financial planning, despite its benefits in reducing stress and providing peace of mind, faces significant barriers to entry for many people due to high costs and time commitment. The average cost of financial planning is a significant barrier for younger generations who aren't willing to spend thousands of dollars. Additionally, financial planning software that aggregates accounts and automates data collection is not widely available, making the process time-consuming and manual. Furthermore, financial planning often falls low on people's priority list due to the perceived low impact on their day-to-day lives compared to other pressing matters. As a result, acquiring customers at a scalable rate is a major challenge for financial planning businesses. Despite these challenges, it's crucial to find a solution to make financial planning more accessible and convenient for individuals, as it can lead to significant long-term benefits.

    • Providing Value Before Complex Financial ServicesTo build trust and earn the right to offer complex financial services, start by providing immediate value to customers through simple, effective solutions like automation and self-driving money management.

Providing immediate value to customers is crucial before offering more complex financial services. The speaker, who co-founded a financial planning company, realized that financial planning wasn't an effective entry product. Instead, they needed to offer something valuable upfront to build trust and earn the right to provide financial planning services over time. This led them to explore automation and self-driving money management, which proved to be a successful product for Wealthfront. Although some people may still prefer human coaching, the speaker came to appreciate the simplicity and effectiveness of automating financial management. After winding down their company, the team joined Wealthfront through an aquihire, where they continued to develop innovative financial products. The speaker also started a podcast during the pandemic as a way to share financial knowledge and insights with a wider audience.

    • Identifying and optimizing passions leads to successFind what you're passionate about and optimize it, even if it means stepping out of your comfort zone. Authentic passion and consistent effort can lead to unexpected opportunities and success.

Finding success in a particular area often involves identifying your passions and optimizing them, even if it means stepping out of your comfort zone. The speaker in this conversation started by trying to save money on housing and transportation, but found that he missed the social connections and experiences that came with living in the city. Instead, he turned to his interests in optimization and travel, and started a podcast to share his insights and expertise. The podcast gained traction, and the speaker was fortunate enough to receive early promotion from unexpected sources. Ultimately, the success of the podcast came from the speaker's authentic passion for the topic and his commitment to producing high-quality content on a consistent basis.

    • Launching a Podcast: Strategies for Initial MomentumTo launch a successful podcast, reach out to networks and resources, create valuable content consistently, and secure knowledgeable guests for each episode.

Creating a podcast requires initial momentum through strategic outreach and consistent content creation. The speaker shared how they leveraged various networks and resources to launch their podcast, including reaching out to existing audiences through newsletters and asking for favors from trusted contacts. However, unlike YouTube, podcasts don't have inherent growth mechanisms, so it's essential to keep creating and sharing content to build an audience. The speaker also highlighted the importance of identifying specific and knowledgeable guests for each episode and conducting thorough research to deliver valuable content. Overall, the process of launching and growing a podcast involves a significant investment of time and effort but can lead to a rewarding and engaging experience for both the host and their audience.

    • Exploring different content formats to reach a wider audienceAdapting to audience preferences and exploring new content formats can maximize reach and share valuable insights.

Creating and sharing content in various formats can cater to different audience preferences and maximize reach. The speaker initially produced a newsletter and a podcast with similar themes but separate audiences. They later discovered that some people preferred reading content over listening, leading them to explore new formats like videos and shorter segments. Additionally, the speaker's unique perspective on life optimization inspired them to work with a coach and develop principles that challenge conventional wisdom. These principles, such as "conventional wisdom sucks," can be further explored and shared through various content formats. Overall, the speaker's journey highlights the importance of adapting to audience preferences and exploring new ways to share valuable content.

    • Exploring the root causes of desiresQuestion assumptions, gather structured info, and prioritize flexibility for effective decision-making and goal achievement.

Questioning assumptions and digging deeper into the root causes of our desires can lead us to unexpected solutions. The speaker shared an example from their personal experience of wanting to retire earlier, but upon further exploration, realized that what they truly wanted was more flexibility in their current job. This concept can be applied to various aspects of life, including product management and decision-making. The speaker also emphasized the importance of structured information gathering to optimize time and make informed decisions. By creating a table or list in advance with specific details, one can efficiently collect and process information, ultimately leading to better outcomes. Overall, this discussion highlights the value of critical thinking, introspection, and intentionality in achieving our goals.

    • The perils of over-optimizing decisionsSetting a timer, making quick unimportant decisions, asking for help, outsourcing tasks, and using productivity tools can prevent getting stuck in the optimization rabbit hole, allowing for valuable experiences and increased efficiency.

Optimizing every decision in life might not always be the most efficient way to live. The speaker shares his experience of going too far in decision-making, especially during a trip to Greece, and suggests practical ways to avoid getting stuck in the optimization rabbit hole. These methods include setting a timer, making unimportant decisions quickly, or asking someone else for help. Additionally, outsourcing tasks you don't enjoy and using productivity tools like Alfred, Superhuman, and Rewind can help save time and increase efficiency. The speaker also emphasizes the importance of knowing when to stop and recognizing the value of experiences over optimization.

    • New tool Rewind saves time by recording and organizing computer activityRewind helps users save time by recording and searching past computer activity, offers privacy benefits, and includes strategies for online shopping savings: use shopping portals, search for coupons, ask for discounts, use credit cards, and buy discounted gift cards.

There's a new tool called Rewind that can help users save time by recording and organizing all their computer activity, including websites, apps, and even audio. This means that users can easily search through their past activity to find information they've previously researched, saving them the time and effort of having to search for it again. The tool also offers potential privacy concerns, as it records everything locally without uploading files or getting web processed. The speaker shared some strategies for getting the best deals when shopping online, such as using shopping portals, searching for coupons, and asking for discounts through live chat. Finally, he suggested using credit cards to earn bonuses on purchases and buying discounted gift cards to maximize savings. Overall, the discussion highlighted the importance of finding efficient ways to save time and money in our daily lives.

    • Maximize savings by leveraging different rewards programsExplore multiple shopping options, look for deals, and utilize various rewards programs to save more money while shopping online.

There are multiple ways to save money while shopping online. The speaker shares an example of buying Home Depot gift cards through Amazon to get a higher cashback or reward points. This strategy allows individuals to maximize their savings by leveraging different rewards programs. So, if you're shopping online, don't limit yourself to just one option. Look for deals and opportunities that can help you save more. Additionally, don't forget to subscribe to the speaker's show or sign up for their email list for more money-saving hacks. Remember, every penny saved counts, and with a little effort, you can upgrade your life and travel more. Furthermore, the speaker encourages listeners to engage with the community by leaving comments on YouTube or reviews on podcast platforms. By doing so, you not only help others discover the podcast but also contribute to the ongoing conversation about personal finance and money-saving strategies. Lastly, the speaker suggests checking out other episodes that align with the topic discussed in the current episode. By staying informed and educated, you'll be better equipped to make smart financial decisions and save more money in the long run.

    Lessons I’m Taking Into 2022 - Season 1 Roundup

    Lessons I’m Taking Into 2022 - Season 1 Roundup

As the first season of the podcast draws to a close I look back at some of the most inspiring moments from the season including from conversations with Ben Francis, Krissy Cela, Chris Williamson, Unjaded Jade, Mrwhosetheboss and Dr Grace Lordan.

One of the biggest lessons I've learned from all the guests who've appeared this season is that we should embrace uncertainty and the idea of having a plan is a bit of a myth because really we're all working things out as we go along.

I also want to say a big thank you if you've tuned into the podcast each week and an even bigger thank you if you've left a review on apple podcasts and subscribed because that really does help other people hear about the podcast. I hope you enjoy this season round-up and I'll see you in season 2.

How To Think Like A Life Coach - Hasan Kubba

How To Think Like A Life Coach - Hasan Kubba

All of us have different areas of our lives that we'd like to improve. But investing in a life coach isn't always an option. Hasan Kubba is my business coach and the author of the business book of the year 2021 ‘The Unfair Advantage: How You Already Have What It Takes To Succeed’. In the conversation we talk about some of the concepts in his book as well as having a mini coaching session so you can apply coaching frameworks to your own life without needing to hire a coach yourself. We talk about realising your limiting beliefs, productivity, confidence and finish by chatting through some of my current predicaments about writing my book.
