    enMarch 22, 2023
What factors led to Vine's decline in popularity?
How did TikTok improve upon Vine's concept?
What role does monetization play in a platform's success?
Why did Clubhouse struggle against Twitter Spaces?
What lesson can be learned from MySpace's downfall?

    Podcast Summary

    • Social Media Platforms Come and GoAdapt to changes in digital landscape and embrace new opportunities to stay relevant in social media.

Social media platforms evolve rapidly, and some, like Vine, may disappear despite their popularity. Vine, which launched in 2013 and was known for its six-second looping videos, faced the challenge of not keeping up with the times and failing to monetize content effectively. As a result, many creators moved to other platforms like YouTube and, eventually, TikTok, leading to Vine's demise. This episode of the Girls in Marketing Podcast discussed various social media platforms that have come and gone, and the reasons behind their disappearance. It serves as a reminder of the importance of adapting to changes in the digital landscape and embracing new opportunities.

    • Social media platforms need to adapt and monetize to stay relevantSocial media platforms must evolve to meet creators' and consumers' changing needs, or risk becoming obsolete. Vine's failure to adapt led to its demise, while Instagram continues to adapt and innovate.

Social media platforms, like Vine, need to adapt and monetize to keep up with the changing needs of both consumers and creators. Vine's failure to do so led to its demise, as popular creators moved to platforms where they could make money from their content. The platform's short-form, 6-second videos may have been innovative at the time, but they didn't provide a sustainable business model. Instagram's current efforts to adapt and change show that social media platforms must stay agile and responsive to keep their user base engaged and prevent becoming obsolete. Ultimately, the success of a social media platform depends on its ability to meet the evolving needs of both its creators and consumers.

    • Listening to user feedback and maintaining a clear vision are crucial for social media successEffective engagement with users and consistent features that cater to their needs are essential for social media platforms to maintain and grow their user base

Effective engagement with users and clear platform direction are key to maintaining a successful social media platform. The discussion about Instagram and Tumblr highlighted how changes without proper user feedback and a clear vision can lead to backlash and ultimately, the loss of user base. Instagram, though praised for listening to user feedback, faced criticism for inconsistent changes and lack of clear direction, leading to a less-than-ideal year in 2022. Tumblr, once a massive platform known for anonymity and shared interests, faced similar issues. After being acquired by Yahoo, the platform made changes that users didn't want, such as removing the ability to comment on posts and introducing DMs. These changes ultimately led to users moving to other platforms that better catered to their needs. Thus, it's essential for social media platforms to listen to user feedback, maintain a clear vision, and consistently provide features that cater to their audience's needs. Only then can they hope to maintain and grow their user base.

    • Maintaining a clear vision and listening to users is crucial for social media platformsSocial media platforms need to prioritize user feedback and have a clear vision to stay competitive and avoid losing relevance and user base.

Companies, especially social media platforms, cannot afford to ignore user feedback and lack a clear vision when facing competition. The case of Tumblr, which was acquired by Yahoo and subsequently lost touch with its user base and vision, serves as a cautionary tale. Similarly, Twitter, with its recent turbulent changes and disregard for user feedback, risks losing its user base and relevance in the market. The people behind these platforms are crucial in maintaining their mission and keeping up with the times. When they are disillusioned or let go, the platform's quality and user experience can suffer, potentially leading to its downfall. It's essential for companies to listen to their users, create features that cater to their needs, and maintain a clear vision to stay competitive and thrive in the long run.

    • Understanding the rise and fall of social media platforms: Mastodon and ClubhousePlatforms must adapt to user needs and concerns to remain competitive in the ever-changing social media landscape

The social media landscape is constantly evolving, with new platforms emerging and others losing popularity. Two examples discussed were Mastodon and Clubhouse. Mastodon, while not entirely new, gained significant attention recently as a potential alternative to Twitter. Its success, however, remains uncertain. Clubhouse, on the other hand, skyrocketed in popularity during the COVID-19 lockdowns but quickly flopped due to issues such as exclusivity, moderation, and overwhelming notifications. These examples demonstrate the importance of adaptability in the digital world and the need for platforms to address user concerns to remain competitive.

    • The ease of use and existing user base of larger competitors can overshadow new technologies and platformsNew technologies and platforms face the risk of being overshadowed by larger competitors, highlighting the importance of adaptability and innovation.

New technologies and platforms can quickly become obsolete when larger, established companies integrate similar features into their existing platforms. This was the case with Clubhouse, an audio chat app that gained popularity in 2020, but was eventually overshadowed by Twitter's introduction of Spaces, a similar feature within the Twitter app. The speaker shared her personal experience of trying out Clubhouse, being put off by sales pitches and self-help content, but ultimately deleting the app once Twitter launched Spaces. The ease of use and existing user base of Twitter allowed Spaces to quickly absorb Clubhouse's audience, leaving the newer app struggling to compete. Another example given was Myspace, an early social media platform that was eventually surpassed by the rise of Facebook. These examples illustrate the importance of adaptability and innovation for new technologies and platforms, as well as the potential risks of being overshadowed by larger competitors.

    • Lack of clear monetization and inability to adapt to competition can hinder social media platformsSuccessful social media platforms need to effectively monetize and adapt to competition to ensure long-term success. Examples include MySpace and Vine.

Social media platforms, especially those that come before more successful ones, often rely on user engagement and community building through features like friend lists and rankings. However, the lack of a clear monetization model and an inability to adapt to competition can hinder their long-term success. For instance, MySpace, which allowed users to rank their friends and had a strong community vibe, was a precursor to Facebook. But, it didn't effectively monetize its platform or prepare for the shift in user behavior towards Facebook. Similarly, Vine, which popularized short-form video content, was overshadowed by TikTok, which built upon Vine's concept but added new features and a more robust monetization model. These examples illustrate the importance of adapting to competition and having a solid business strategy in the social media landscape.

    • Adapting and Monetizing: Balancing User Experience and Transparency on Social Media PlatformsSuccessful social media platforms evolve, listen to user preferences, and balance monetization, user experience, and transparency to maintain trust and engagement.

Successful social media platforms are those that adapt and effectively monetize while maintaining transparency with their users. The discussion highlighted the example of Vybe, which may have been ahead of its time with short-form content but ultimately failed due to monetization issues. Platforms like TikTok, which continuously evolve and listen to user preferences, have thrived. However, TikTok still faces criticism for its monetization model for creators, leading some to migrate to platforms like YouTube. Transparency is crucial for user trust, as influencers and platforms can no longer hide behind opaque practices. As we look to the future, it will be interesting to see how TikTok balances monetization, user experience, and transparency. We invite you to share your experiences with social media platforms that have disappeared and why, as well as any others we may have missed.
