    Unpacking The Little Mermaid Backlash

    enMay 26, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Controversy over Halle Bailey's casting as Ariel in 'The Little Mermaid'Despite racial controversy, focus on artistry and creativity in film adaptations, and recognize the importance of diverse casting.

The internet continues to be a battleground for controversy, with the latest target being the casting of Halle Bailey as Ariel in Disney's live-action remake of "The Little Mermaid." Despite the film's massive viewership and success, some individuals have taken to social media to express their disapproval based on the character's race. This issue, unfortunately, overshadows the beauty and timelessness of the story about self-sacrifice and identity. It's important to remember that fictional characters can be interpreted and portrayed in various ways, and the core essence of the story remains unchanged. Let's focus on the artistry and creativity behind these adaptations, rather than getting bogged down by divisive debates. Additionally, it's essential to recognize that representation matters and that diverse casting can expand the horizons of young audiences.

    • The debate over Halle Bailey's casting as Ariel isn't about race, but the best person for the jobWhile acknowledging the importance of representation, it's essential to consider the fantastical nature of The Little Mermaid's underwater world and the numerous red-haired Disney characters for audiences to identify with, rather than focusing solely on race in the casting decision.

The debate surrounding representation in media and the casting of Halle Bailey as Ariel in the live-action Little Mermaid adaptation is not about race being ignored, but rather the best person getting the job. The speaker acknowledges the importance of representation and the impact it has on audiences, but also emphasizes that there are already numerous red-haired Disney characters for those audiences to identify with. They also point out that the underwater world of The Little Mermaid is a fantastical setting where realism should not be a concern. The conversation then shifts to the Black Panther, acknowledging that the character's blackness is central to its identity, making the casting of a white actor less feasible. Overall, the speaker encourages appreciation for the diversity of Disney characters and the joy of experiencing new adaptations.

    • Controversies over representation in mediaAnger and criticism towards casting decisions that deviate from traditional portrayals of historical figures and characters overshadowed excitement for new seasons and sparked debates over historical accuracy and importance of representation in media.

There continues to be ongoing debates and controversies surrounding representation in various forms of media, from movies and TV shows to podcasts and documentaries. The discussion highlighted the anger and criticism towards casting decisions that deviate from traditional portrayals of historical figures and characters. In the case of the MTV Challenge podcast, the excitement for a new season was overshadowed by the controversy surrounding the casting of a black woman in the role of Cleopatra in a Netflix docuseries. Similarly, the representation of mermaids in popular culture was also discussed. Egypt's criticism of the casting in the Cleopatra docuseries raises questions about historical accuracy and the importance of representation in media. Ultimately, these debates underscore the complex and nuanced issues surrounding representation and the ongoing need for open and respectful dialogue.

    • The debate over representation in media, particularly in fantasy worldsAmazon's new Lord of the Rings prequel series faces backlash for featuring diverse casting, while the mermaid statue controversy touches on the importance of realistic representation. Debates highlight the complexities and nuances of representation in media and the need for thoughtful and inclusive storytelling.

The issue of representation in media, particularly in fantasy worlds, continues to spark controversy and debate. The new Lord of the Rings prequel series on Amazon Prime Video has faced backlash for featuring black actors in roles traditionally portrayed as white. Some viewers argue that it's unrealistic for Tolkien's creatures to be non-white. However, others argue for the importance of diversity and the need to expand representation in media. The mermaid statue controversy also touches on the issue of representation, as some argue that the sculptor's last-minute pivot to a mermaid design resulted in an unrealistic portrayal. Ultimately, these debates highlight the complexities and nuances of representation in media and the ongoing need for thoughtful and inclusive storytelling. Amazon's decision to suspend reviews of the Lord of the Rings series on Rotten Tomatoes to prevent Internet trolls from bringing down its score is an acknowledgment of the potential for hate speech and the importance of creating a safe and respectful online community.

    • The absence of diversity in fantasy worldsRonny Chieng joked about the lack of representation of Asians and black people in 'Lord of the Rings' and other fantasy novels and shows, emphasizing the importance of addressing diversity in real life before focusing on fantasy worlds. The conversation also touched on the need for more representation in various media forms.

The lack of representation of black people and Asians in "Lord of the Rings" and other fantasy novels and shows continues to be a topic of discussion. During a segment on The Daily Show, Ronny Chieng joked about the absence of diversity in these fantasy worlds, suggesting that we focus on diversifying real places before worrying about fantasy ones. He pointed out that while there are Asian characters in other fantasy franchises like Star Trek, there is still a lack of representation in Middle Earth. The conversation also touched on the social media trends, including the latest season of MTV's "The Challenge" podcast. Overall, the conversation highlighted the need for more diversity and representation in various forms of media, from fantasy novels to reality TV shows.
