Meanwhile, LinkedIn is an effective platform for hiring professionals, especially those not actively seeking new roles. In the real world, a brutal battle is unfolding in Ukraine between Ukrainian soldiers and mercenaries recruited by the Wagner Group, with the latter consisting mostly of former convicts. Despite the high casualty rates, the Wagner Group, led by a former hot dog seller named Yevgeny Progyzyn, claimed victory in Soledar. Meanwhile, in the business world, Blue Nile's lab-grown diamonds provide a more ethical and cost-effective alternative to natural diamonds, while LinkedIn's unique hiring capabilities help businesses find top talent.

    • From humble beginnings to a powerful player in Russian politicsA man who rose from poverty to become a mastermind behind Russia's hybrid war efforts, using business acumen and shady dealings to ascend the Russian political elite

Yevgeny Prigozhin, a man who started life in poverty and served years in a penal colony, has climbed the ranks of Russian society through a combination of business acumen and shady dealings, ultimately becoming a powerful player in Russia's hybrid war efforts. From a humble hot dog stand in Saint Petersburg to catering government contracts and later financing the notorious Internet Research Agency, Prigozhin has proven himself to be a master of chaos, using it as a ladder to ascend the Russian political elite. His transformation from a waiter serving high-profile politicians to a provocateur courting the press is a testament to his ambition and adaptability. Despite his controversial past, Prigozhin's influence continues to grow, leaving a lasting impact on the geopolitical landscape.

    • Russian mercenary group Wagner's controversial activitiesThe Wagner Group, a Russian mercenary organization, is involved in mercenary work, resource extraction, and cyber operations, with a presence in Africa and the Middle East. Their activities are risky to investigate, as shown by the killing of Russian journalists, but continue due to their global impact.

The Wagner Group, a Russian mercenary organization, has been involved in various dangerous and controversial activities around the world, particularly in Africa and the Middle East. The group, which was allegedly established by a former Russian special forces officer with a Nazi Waffen SS tattoo, has been linked to mercenary work, resource extraction, and cyber operations. The group's activities are risky to investigate, as shown by the killing of three Russian journalists allegedly by Wagner operatives. The Wagner Group's presence in countries like Central African Republic involves training local armies, conducting joint operations, and establishing businesses, including mining operations and alcohol brands. Despite the risks, investigations into the group's activities continue due to their significant impact on global politics and security.

    • Accusations of War Crimes and Human Rights Abuses against Wagner GroupThe Russian private military company, Wagner, is accused of committing war crimes and human rights abuses in various countries, with close ties to the Russian government, despite denials of involvement.

The Russian private military company, Wagner, is accused of committing war crimes and human rights abuses in various countries, including Central African Republic and Mali. Wagner, which operates as a proxy for Russian military interests, has been linked to rapes, killings, and vandalization of mosques. The company's leadership, primarily Evgeny Prigozhin, has close ties to the Russian government, with training camps located near Russian military facilities. Despite these connections, Wagner and Prigozhin have denied any involvement with the Russian state. The international community, including the EU, US, and UK, have imposed sanctions on Wagner and Prigozhin in response to their activities. Journalists and investigators have uncovered evidence of Wagner's involvement in various conflicts and financial dealings, revealing a murky leadership structure and potential war crimes.

    • Russian Businessman's Attempt to Sue Journalist in UK as SLAPPSanctioned individuals can still initiate strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPP) to intimidate or silence critics, potentially incurring significant legal fees

Individuals, even those who have been subjected to international sanctions, can still attempt to sue others through complex legal maneuvers. Yevgeniy Progyzyn, a sanctioned Russian businessman, attempted to sue Elliot Higgins, a journalist, in the UK in a strategic lawsuit against public participation (SLAPP). Despite Progyzyn's sanctions, the UK treasury allowed him to pay his lawyers, leading to potential legal fees totaling up to £1,000,000 if the case had reached the courtroom. However, the invasion of Ukraine in 2022 led to Progyzyn's lawyers dropping him, and the case was eventually dismissed. This experience highlights the potential risks and costs involved in such SLAPP lawsuits, which are often used to intimidate or silence critics.

    • Appreciating Mothers and Conflicts in UkraineCelebrate mothers' love and sacrifices while acknowledging global conflicts, like Ukraine, where groups like the Wagner Group recruit mercenaries, raising concerns for potential war crimes.

This Mother's Day, show appreciation to the selfless mothers in our lives by treating them to thoughtful gifts from 1800 Flowers. Meanwhile, in Ukraine, the Wagner Group, led by Yevgeniy Progyny, has been recruiting mercenaries, including convicts, to aid Russia's struggling military efforts. The group's tactics, including the massacre in Bucha, have raised concerns of potential war crimes. Despite this, Progyny has been hailed as a hero by Putin, highlighting the complex dynamics of power and loyalty within the Russian political landscape. Overall, it's a reminder to celebrate the love and sacrifices of mothers, while also acknowledging the harsh realities of global conflicts. Don't forget to order your Mother's Day gifts at 1800flowers.com/acast and save up to 40%!

    • Wagner Group Leader Yevgeniy Prigozhin's Rising Power and Conflicts with Russian MilitaryDespite facing challenges and criticism from the Russian military, Wagner Group leader Yevgeniy Prigozhin continues to assert victories and expand his influence in Putin's military operation in Ukraine.

The war in Ukraine has brought Wagner Group leader Yevgeniy Prigozhin to new heights of power and notoriety, as he is seen as a key player in Putin's military operation. However, his rising status puts him at odds with the Russian military, leading to competition and criticism from both sides. On the front lines, Ukrainian soldiers like Olga Biga and Dmitry Marechnik describe the harsh realities of the war, which contrast sharply with the propaganda circulated by Wagner on its Telegram channels. Despite the challenges, Prigozhin continues to claim victories for his group, leading to tension and potential conflict with the Russian military establishment.

    • Russian oligarch Dmitry Rogozin's involvement with Wagner Group in UkraineRussian oligarch Dmitry Rogozin's actions with Wagner Group in Ukraine suggest he could be a Putin challenger, but his ties to the Kremlin remain strong.

Dmitry Rogozin, a Russian oligarch and politician, has been making headlines for his involvement with the Wagner Group, a private military company, in Ukraine. His actions have led some to speculate that he could be a challenger to Vladimir Putin. However, it's important to note that Rogozin's actions are not entirely independent of Putin and the Russian government. While he may be using Wagner to establish more political power, there are signs that he is still operating with Kremlin approval. The situation in Russia is chaotic, and it's difficult to predict where things will go, but for now, Rogozin remains a helpful figure for Putin, serving as a larger-than-life bogeyman who appears unaccountable but is still a product of the Russian system.

    • Russian private military company, Wagner Group, plays significant role in Russia's military actionsWagner Group, founded by Yevgeny Prigozhin, generates off-the-books revenue for Putin in Africa and Middle East, provides deniability, and sows instability through misinfo and military intervention.

Wagner Group, a Russian private military company, has been playing a significant role in Russia's military actions, potentially acting as a tool for Putin to generate off-the-books revenue from Africa and the Middle East, while also providing deniability for Russia in case of failure. The group's founder, Yevgeny Prigozhin, or "Putin's chef," has built his wealth and power in chaotic post-Soviet Russia and now uses it to sow instability around the world through misinformation and military intervention. However, Putin remains the ultimate power broker, ready to cut ties with Prigozhin when it serves his interests. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine serves as a reminder of the complex and dangerous relationship between these powerful figures.

    Taking the stand: Emma's story

Two reports of rape. Two criminal trials. Two not guilty verdicts. Two men, cleared. Two women – torn apart. A Tortoise investigation has heard how two complainants, Grace*, and Emma*, experienced the justice system from the point their alleged rapist was charged to the moment they were told of the jury’s decision. At a time when a vanishingly small number of police-recorded rapes result in a criminal charge, access to the transcripts of these two trials has permitted a step-by-step analysis of how each woman’s case was prosecuted, how they were cross-examined by the defence, why in one case, a woman’s past sexual history was allowed to be put before a jury, and the “bad character” of one alleged rapist was not.

Bases, Training and Weapon Sales: Latest Trends in China-Africa Military Ties

Three Chinese warships made ports of call in Ghana and Nigeria this month, prompting a new wave of speculation about Beijing's military ambitions in Africa. The PLA Navy visit followed reports that Chinese miners in the Central African Republic were rescued by a group of Russian mercenaries which also triggered questions as to whether the controversial Wagner Group is now working more closely with Chinese entities on the continent.

All of this is set against a backdrop of increasingly close military-to-military ties between the PLA and their counterparts in Africa.

Paul Nantulya, a research associate at the Africa Center for Strategic Studies in Washington, D.C., is among the foremost experts on Chinese military engagement on the continent. He joins Eric & Cobus to discuss his latest research on the increasingly close ties between Chinese and African militaries for training and education which are also closely linked to increased Chinese weapons sales.

Exploring the murky, mysterious world of Russian military contracting

Exploring the murky, mysterious world of Russian military contracting

Force for Hire’s hosts have focused primarily on American military contracting. We’re changing it up this week as Michelle and Desmon look at a private Russian paramilitary force that is a global threat, even though it isn’t formally recognized by its government.

The Wagner Group, believed to be run by former Russian military intelligence officer Dmitriy Utkin, is shrouded in secrecy. A 2017 Bloomberg article placed its membership as high as 6,000, even though mercenary forces are not allowed under Russian law. (https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2017-12-06/putin-wants-to-win-but-not-at-all-costs)

The group has reportedly worked in Africa, Sudan, Libya, Yemen, Ukraine and Syria.

In early 2018, forces believed to be a part of the Wagner Group engaged in a battle with U.S.-led Syrian Democratic Forces troops near the Syrian town of Khasham. That led to a U.S. airstrike that killed numerous Russian mercenaries fighting alongside pro-Syrian government forces. Some reports put the number of Russian deaths as high as 200, although that has been contested. (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/feb/13/russian-mercenaries-killed-us-airstrikes-syria) Critics allege that Russia uses mercenaries in Syria to keep official military losses low.

Even with high-profile battles, the Wagner Group largely flies under the radar, leaving questions about its members and its mission, and who’s ultimately calling the shots.

To help explain the issues, Force for Hire welcomes Sergey Sukhankin, a research fellow at the Jamestown Foundation think tank in Washington; and Peer Schouten, a senior researcher at the Danish Institute for International Studies, a research institute in Denmark.

ogether, they’ll talk about how the Wagner Group and other Russian contractors are influencing policies, affecting trade and shaping the politics of central African nations. Their operations on that continent remains a hot topic among the contracting community and those that follow it. Schouten and Sukhankin explain all this and more on the latest episode of Force for Hire.
