Season 9 Episode 5: What Self-Care Is and Isn’t with Jamie McFaden

Is self-care a part of your strategy for success? Do you know what self-care is? And what it isn’t? Self-care specialist Jamie McFaden joins Master Certified Life Coach Melissa Wiggins for this week’s podcast to walk you through the small steps you can take each day. Steps that take

20 minutes or less, but can rewire our brains and the messages we can take in so we can show up in the world better.

Jaime says self-care isn’t a solo mission. Take off your badge of hyper independence – we don’t have to do it alone. We all need support with your six pillars:  Mental, Physical, Emotional, Spiritual, Social, Financial.  Pick one area, build your team, reach out, and start to see your own value. Self-care is your #1 form of healthcare. Grab a cuppa and listen in as these former people-pleasers share what they’ve learned to help you change the script.

All right, lassies, I'm interrupting this episode. And I may be interrupting other episodes to give little disclaimers when there may be some words that are not safe for the little ears. Okay? This episode is no one that I advise you listen to in your car, or your minivan if you are me, or if you're my clients, the cool Jeeps they have and drive along the beach. So you understand what I'm saying. There could be some words that are choice words, there could be some cuss words, and there could be some topics within the episode, that is not appropriate for your kids. Most of my episodes are fine. If they're not, I'm going to add this little disclaimer at the beginning of the episode – alert, alert, find your headphones. Now back to the episode.

Hello, lassies and lads, welcome to another episode of Coaching and a Cup of Tea with Mummabear. I have the one and only Melissa Parsons, who is not only the founder of this concept that I'm extremely excited to share with everybody. But she is also the podcast host of Your Favorite Y ou. And I'm obsessed with the entire concept. And so today we're going to be asking her how she came up with the concept what it means. How do you know what the answer to these questions are? Hello, Lassie.

Hello, lassies and lads. Welcome to Coaching and a Cup of Tea with Mummabear. I have Lindsay Dotzlaf on. I believe I deserve a medal for saying it correct. I literally just practiced with Lindsay before we came on here because of course I want to say a woman who I love and respects named correctly, right. So I'm very glad I was able to do that. So Lindsay is a former coach of mines. I've been in her Coaching Master's program. I'm in her Coaching Lab, and she is someone that I respect greatly. I stalked her for a very long time before I signed up her for her mastermind and I devoured her podcast, which I will link in the show notes because it's phenomenal. And everybody should be listening to it. Whether you're a coach, or you want coaching. Lindsey tell us three things about you before we get started on this episode.

    Lindsay Dotzlaf  00:56

Oh, my goodness. Okay, first thing, this is like my nightmare question. I get so nervous. I'm like, I don't have all of the things. But yes, I'm Lindsey dot slough. I am a coach. I work with coaches, I teach coaching mastery. I get very nervous when you ask me questions like this? And is this supposed to be like fun facts about me, or...

Hello lassies and lads. Welcome to Coaching and a Cup of Tea with Mummabear. You are going to love this episode. Can you feel like my energy I am like jacked up today because I have the one and only a breeze shard? Justin okay, you can see him no but he is showing us his muscles. But what you cannot see if you were watching this video is his brilliant mind. Okay. Rashard is one of the most genuine, caring, authentic people that I've ever made. And also, he is my trainer, who helps me with my brain mostly. And him and I have so many discussions at our 5am workouts about what working out does for my brain. I feel like sometimes we have this idea. You know, we want to lose weight, we want to have the six pack we want all of these things. And I coach mostly women to work out and push them into that section of their life only because I have felt the massive shift in my brain and my energy by moving my body and that's why I have asked Brichard to come on today and really talk about what does it look like to work with him.

Doing the work of feeling your feelings is literally the most courageous work that people can do. It's so important to learn how we think and how to choose thoughts that are in line with what we want to believe about the world. But you cannot think your way out of a past experience that is almost like holding you hostage to that remote moment that you choose to do something for yourself, it is never wasted. It's never going backwards is never not worth it. Because it leads you to the moment, everything changes.

    Melissa Wiggins  00:56

Hello lassies. Welcome to coaching and a cup of tea with Mama Bear. And I have a very special guest with me, I'm so excited to have Jess Johnson, who is joining us from Hawaii. And we are so excited to get this episode done. Because I did not have power this morning. We have another hurricane in Florida, and the power has came back. So we're like, oh, we gotta like start this podcast episode. And get it done for you guys. This is season eight of the podcast, which is insane. And so exciting. And this whole season we've been talking about, you know, why do women go on retreats? What are some of the things we do on retreats, we've been talking a lot about what Jess says, you know, that below the neck stuff, right? Like what is happening below the neck, sort of that mind body connection piece that I think, you know, we can tend to forget about or put second. And so I'm very excited to have Jess come on. And we're going to be talking about emotions and feelings and things that are stored in the body. But I just feel like it's something really important that people need to know about.

Melissa Wiggins  Hello lassies Welcome to coaching and a cup of tea with Mummabear. And also Sue McCarroll today, one of my best friends in the entire world. You are very lucky to get to hear from this Lassie because she has sunshine in a cup. And even though you can't see her, she's just smiling massive, which is who she is. I am so excited to have her on my podcast for season eight. Season II is all about retreats, self care, how do we take care of our bodies and our mind and Sue Macau as the Lassie to explain to us how we do that. But before we get into that, Sue, why don't you tell us the five things that we need to know about Sue McCarroll?

Sue McCarroll  Okay, I feel like this is right in line with our friendship, because I'm so good at promoting other people and not so great about promoting myself. So I feel like it's just perfect that yeah, for those of you that don't know about Melissa, and my friendship, we like kind of challenge each other. And well, actually, she challenges me, I think I challenge you to in the health front, but we could talk about that later. But she always seems to like to throw me into these situations like 'Oh, go speak on this stage. Or don't worry, like there's a top 10 motivational speaker there. No worries, don't worry.' So it feels just about right to start this podcast off. So five things that they should know about me.

Hello, lassies and lads. Welcome to Coaching and a Cup of Tea with Mummabear. I have a very special guest here today. I've never had anybody on the podcast, who is an expert in the way she is about gut health. She is the queen of it. And I'm completely obsessed with her and so excited. She's here. Rachel, would you introduce yourself to the amazing listeners on the podcast?

    Rachel Scheer  01:15

Yeah, and Coach Mummaear, it is an honor to be on your podcast here today. You're just a ball of joy. And I'm excited to talk all things gut health, because I truly believe you know, our health really is the foundation for our success. Whether we're a mama, whether we're an entrepreneur, and a mama, which is I know a lot of you ladies who are listening to this podcast, but a little background about myself, I am a functional medicine, dietitian, not a lot of people know what that is. But functional medicine essentially means root cause. So I help people get to the root cause of their chronic health issues, whether that's hormonal imbalances, thyroid issues, gut issues, and heal instead of just deal and reach their optimal level of health, essentially. But instead of using medication, when you hear medicine, you tend to think medicine. It's more of a lifestyle-based approach. So holistic mind and body, I always ask the question, why do we have this problem in the first place? And what do we need to do to restore function?

    Melissa Wiggins  00:39

Hello lassies and lads, welcome to Coaching and a Cup of tea with Mummabear. I have a very special guest here today who actually did a very, very good Scottish accent. And maybe he will do it for us. Dr. Russ Kennedy, welcome to my podcast.

    Dr Russ Kennedy  00:56

Oh, it's nice to be here. And at some point in the podcast, I'll break into my scar. Right now, I'm currently Canadian. So we'll just stick with that for now.

    Melissa Wiggins  01:05

All right, we got it. So I wanted to have you on the podcast because I read your incredible book anxiety, our aid anxiety prescription. I'm just fascinated by all of your work. And I just really wanted for the audience to hear about the way you're trying to change the way people look at anxiety, because that's what this book is really doing.

    Dr Russ Kennedy  01:30

Yeah. Yeah, it's really about, you know, so much of anxiety therapy involves changing the thoughts of your mind, right? And what if the thoughts of your mind are the problem? What if they're just the symptom? So you know, like you if you have, if you have a viral infection, you have a fever, the fever isn't the problem. It's the viral infection, right? So, so what happens, I believe in anxiety is we get these old traumas from typically from childhood, but they can be inherited, you know, there's a bunch of ways that we get trauma into our system. And that trauma sort of reverberates that trauma energy reverberates inside of our body.

Lindsay:  Sometimes people will reach out to me when they're thinking about applying for coaching masters. And though they will ask me, they will want to know, I always think it's a funny question, they will want to know, kind of exactly how much work is required? Like, how much of my time is this gonna take, which I understand some of them have other jobs or, you know, coaching is like a part time thing, or, you know, whatever, there's some some circumstance in their life that they're trying to figure out, like, how much time do I need to set aside? And I always have a hard time answering that, because I know there are people like you who show up who take the homework very seriously, who probably spend more time than the average person in the mastermind, really thinking about it and going very deep, and maybe not every single week, and I don't even give homework every single week, but just really going all in right diving in saying what I'm gonna get everything I can out of this. I'm willing to go all the way there. And then I know there are people who come and it's a little more surface level. And they're like, Yeah, that was great. And, you know, probably don't spend as much time as you did. And I'm curious what like, what are the thoughts that you have about not even my mastermind, but just anything that you go into? Like that any? You know, other masterminds, other spaces that you're in? What are your thoughts about it that help you to show up that way?

Melissa: So I think, you know, I think when I sent the money to you, when I paid for the six months, I instantly was like, I'm showing up big, right? Because this is an investment. And I'm investing into a kada looked at coaching masters, like I'm building a house, right? And like, this was like the floor of the house, right? Like this is going to be what is going to stabilize my business. And I want to be known as like the best life coach for mom entrepreneurs. But in order to be that, I'm going to have to learn how to answer and ask very good questions.

Lindsay: Hello, I'm so happy to have you here today. Can you introduce yourself? Tell them who you are and a little bit about what you do.

     Melissa:
Finally, I get to be on the podcast that I have listened to every episode, and have stopped you for so long. I'm like so excited. My name is Melissa Wiggins. But everybody calls me Mama bears specifically coach Mama Bear. Because I have so many children. I an entrepreneur who coaches mom, entrepreneurs to have balance and joy in their life today, not waiting for the weekend. And I'm an advocate for being a business woman who loves her business, but also loves to hang out with her kids.

Lindsay:  I love that one of my favorite things when I have people on, especially people that have been in my mastermind, and that I've seen do the work on this is when you can just confidently are like this is who I am. And this is exactly what I do. Because I know it was something that you kind of worked on for a little bit, which we'll get into. But first I want to ask you, I feel like this might be with you a loaded question. Because in my mind when I watch you and I watch your watch on Instagram, and your stories and all the things, and I know a little bit of your story, it feels like you've lived 20 lives, you have just so many stories. So I'm curious. I don't even know if this is going to be a simple answer. But I'm really curious how you got into coaching?

Melissa: Sure, it's a great question I have had maybe lives, I feel like I'm an old soul, you know, like, I'm the oldest of five kids. And I feel like when you're the oldest, like you tend to grow up maybe a little bit faster. And there was like a lot of things that happened in my childhood that sort of made me grow up really quickly. And I feel like I just got super responsible, super organized super quickly, which means that like my life looks like I'm like a 60 year old already. But I got into coaching because I have been coached mentored for about 13 years. And I was transitioning out of my last job, which was the executive director slash CEO of my nonprofit that I started. And I was like trying to figure out like, what I was going to do, and I was talking with my coach, because I've had a coach for a long time.

Season 7 Episode 4: Attachment Theory and Why It's Impacting Your Friendships

Season 7 Episode 4: Attachment Theory and Why It's Impacting Your Friendships

Friendship.  As adults – particularly as working mummabears – friendships can be tricky.  Do you get anxious when you don’t hear back from a friend, or worry about what you said? Or do you shut people out, without a discussion? You may have a tendency toward an anxious or avoidant attachment style, depending on the situation.  We all get off the beam from time to time! In this episode of “Coaching and a Cup of Tea with Mummabear,” Master Certified Life Coach Melissa Wiggins dives deep into Attachment Theory – what it is, and how it affects our friendships. Have you thought about what kind of friend are you? What kind of friend do you want to be…or what kind do you want to have? When we are conscious of how we are showing up and how we want to show up, then we can change. Grab a cuppa and listen in.

Hello, lassies and lads, welcome to Coaching and a Cup of tea with Mummabear. I actually really do have my tea. And I'm drinking today chamomile and peppermint out of my cup from Harrods. Delicious. Okay, so this episode is titled attachment theory and why it's impacting your friendships. So you're gonna want to listen to this episode, if you are someone who has friendships in your life, there are maybe some parts of friendship for you that are a little challenging. We're gonna get into if you're the type of person who gets really anxious when someone doesn't respond to a text, or are you the type of frame to when someone asks you to lunch, you're all about where they want to go to lunch and what they want to eat. And we're going to get into why there is this relationship between attachment theory and how you're acting in friendship.

Okay, so attachment theory is basically having its moment and fame right now it is having what I like to call its five second sub theme, it really is being talked about, it feels like by everyone. What is attachment theory? So if you just go on to Google right now, last season, you check, like what is attachment theory? It talks a lot about the emotional bond between like a parent and a child and early ages. What is happening now is there are these incredible researchers, doctors, psychologists, therapists, life coaches who are out there talking about, hey, this isn't just impactful in that scenario, this is in relationships. This is how I not just with my parents, with my spouse, and now which what we're going to talk about as heaviness is really being and my friendships.

Now, I am an empowerment coach, I work primarily with mom, entrepreneurs, friendships, for mom, entrepreneurs, can be challenging. And so it has came up with a lot of my clients recently, which is why I started to just dive into the complexities of friendship. Now, last episode, I got very vulnerable about my own challenges with friendship, because I not only want to show the other side of me, the struggling side of me, I feel like I am like the queen of optimism, right?

    Season 7 Episode 3: Women & Friendship

    Season 7 Episode 3: Women & Friendship

Research tells us how important friendships are….but when you’re a busy, working mummabear it can be hard to find the time to be a good friend.  And what even is a good friend? What makes a good friendship? In this episode of “Coaching and a Cup of Tea with Mummabear,” Master Certified Life Coach Melissa Wiggins gets real about her stories of friendship, what to do when the stories we tell ourselves aren’t helpful, and how create friendships that are flexible instead of fragile.  Grab a cuppa and listen in.

Hello lassies and lads. Welcome to Coaching and a Cup of Tea with Mummabear. I missed you guys last week. If you are listening to do this in real time, you know that I live in Florida and hurricane in came through Florida and has really caused so much have a we are actually so lucky. We lost power for about three days, our local little town College Park, which is you know, just looks on to downtown Orlando had sent calls and the leaks came up onto the land. And a lot of people were flooded out of their homes, they lost their cars, sweet Sanibel Island where I go and do my solo trips, once or twice a year has really just been, you know, taken off of the world. And it is completely flattened. It is heart wrenching. And so our family have been trying to help people as much as we can. There are a lot of families in need. And if you're listening, and you're one of those amazeballs people who just kept checking in on my family and other people I know I just wanted to say thank you, and I missed you.

Okay to change completely, to go from something really sad to something really happy. I feel like that is the story of my life. If you have listened to this podcast for a while, you know that I see we find joy in the journey, we create the joy, we choose the joy, I am not one of those people that believes that your life has to be amazeballs. And all of the area's in order for you to enjoy it. I have some extremely difficult personal things I'm going through right now. And I also have lots and lots of joy. And I've shared a little bit of it that before during my son's journey, and most of you know he had pediatric cancer. And during that time, we were able to find joy. And so this podcast is super special.

If you are listening to this podcast right now and you're like, oh my gosh, what is the podcast called? What is she going to talk? I promise you a couple of things. I have a takeaway. And I'm going to be talking about friendship and women and why it's important for us. So you're going to want to stick around to hear all of the research about it. And also some personal stories.

Most of the time I give like a little weave of personal stories, but this one, I feel a little bit cold to get into a little bit deeper and a little bit more personal than normal. So if personal is not your jam, this might not be the best episode of mine's to listen to.

Hello, lassies and lads. Welcome to another amazing episode of Coaching and a Cup of Tea with Mummabear. It has been a crazy couple of weeks there is a lot going on, in MelissaWiggins.life and my company. I've got a lot to tell you lassies and lads. But before all of that, which is probably going to be an update in the next episode, I wanted to share an interview I did with well to you podcast with my good friend Sue McCarroll and her co host, Caitlin. So they are on a mission to be rebels on the diet culture, they are all about everything wellness, pilates, like they're just the most incredible souls. And they interviewed me all about pediatric cancer because September is pediatric cancer awareness month. So I have been speaking at schools, and events all about pediatric cancer, the impact of it, and our foundation, cannonball kids cancer.  So I don't talk about the foundation a lot on this podcast, because we are a life coaching podcast. But it's difficult for me not to talk about my life in September, when pediatric cancer is a huge part of my daily in this time, so I wanted to share it. I know you're going to love it. It's all about what do you do to take care of yourself when you're in a tough situation? So many of us have a lot of things that are going on, maybe you're going through something with your child, maybe you're going through a divorce. Maybe you're having a hard time with someone in your family or setting boundaries, whatever it is, how do you take care of yourself and those situations? So that's what this episode is all about. It has literal things you can do tangible takeaways, you know, that's my thing. And it's also a super fun episode and you're going to love it.

Hello, lassies and, lads. Welcome to Coaching and a Cup of Tea with Mummabear. We're in a new season, Season seven. And because this week was National Sobriety Day, I decided that one of the most popular episodes I've ever done was an interview I did with Amberly Lago, the author of True Grit and Grace. That's also the name of her podcast. And I also was with her last week. It is so crazy to me that last week I was in Texas with her and 30 of her master minders, spending the most incredible weekend being deeply, deeply inspired. I'm still floating on the high of it. But it reminded me of this incredible interview I did if you are looking for resilience, if you are looking to listen to a story about sobriety about what it's like to be at the pits of despair, and take it all the way to what she has done. You're gonna want to listen to this episode. Welcome to season seven, lassies. You're going to love this episode, there are lots of links in the show case notes. She has a mastermind that's open right now. They're about to get started. It's called Unstoppable Mastermind, you are going to want to check all of the notes out, and I hope you have the most amazeballs day.

     Melissa Wiggins There you are!

     Amberly Lago  02:15

Hi beautiful! Oh my gosh. You are so amazing.

     Melissa Wiggins I love i!

Amberly Lago Thank you so much. I've been looking forward to this every time I hear one of your messages or see one of your texts. It just goes straight to my heart. So I'm so grateful for you and thanking for that beautiful cost and everything that you do. I'm so grateful for you.

     Melissa Wiggins  02:42

Well, gratitude is one of the things I want to talk about. That's one of the subjects I want to talk about, because that's one of the things I resonated with in the book.
