How is your marketing for your Small business? Lets dive in with Laura Higgins.

How is your marketing for your Small business? Lets dive in with Laura Higgins.

Do you need some help with Marketing your small business? This week on the Lady Leadership podcast - I sat down with Laura Higgins founder and owner of My Marketing Playbook and LaLa Social club.

Laura is an online marketing expert and grew her business by doing! Laura has developed an online course that brings together the key things that people need to know when they are marketing their business. She believes that marketing shouldn't be hard work and that it should be fun to build your business and drive growth in your business.

Originally having studied design Laura developed a real skill and passion for marketing when she failed at her sales job for a coffee business and they asked her to move into marketing.

The strategies that she developed for that business worked and their business 'blew up' and she started to get asked by others how she had done it. And so started the Marketing Playbook.

Laura's marketing now spans across many business areas and her fresh and effective marketing ideas have helped many businesses to grow and succeed.

Laura and I discuss what her course covers plus her tips for Marketing a small business.
We talk about consistently showing up, we talk about growing your business and attracting the people you really want to engage in your business. Plus we talk Gary-vee style creating and the importance of repurposing content and being smart about using your resources.

Laura also talks about how small business can really play to their strengths by being nimble and having personality and the ability to pivot especially through Cov-id.

We also talk about the ability to cut through the noise online and the importance of standing for something. Getting clarity of your audience and who you are speaking to!

And we discuss iterations of customer over time and getting clarity on the result that you want and then using the language of your customers.

And helping people! We also talk about who is inspiring us plus tools!
I could talk to Laura all day! Have a listen you will love this podcast!

Reskilling, Entrepreneur, Intrapreneur and Being a Developer with Nikki Ricks

Reskilling, Entrepreneur, Intrapreneur and Being a Developer with Nikki Ricks

I originally met Nikki Ricks after I got in touch with her following after an email that popped into my inbox that she had recently graduated from GA as a Developer. Nikki's background and path to being a Developer fascinated me.

Nikki originally studied Town Planning but after working in the field and discovering that she was an intrapreneur she knew that she needed to get out of the office that she was in and throw herself into the startup world.

Nikki worked with a number of startups but after spending more time in the space she wanted to be on the other side of the conversation and learn more  about the tech that powered a number of solutions.

After some self learning she enrolled in a GA tech immersive and now is working as a fully fledged developer. On this path Nikki needed to get comfortable with the value of never ending learning in your job - being a developer.

Nikki is curious and places great value in being on a path to always learning something new and trying new things - including being a stand up comedian!

We talked about being a women in tech, being curious and beating imposter syndrome plus bias in the workplace in gender and race.

Check out this podcast with Nikki Ricks!

How is your Culture? Rules of Belonging at Work with Fiona Robertson

How is your Culture? Rules of Belonging at Work with Fiona Robertson

This week on the Lady Leadership podcast I caught up with Fiona Robertson who is a Culture Change expert.

We chat culture - what it is and what it isn't and how culture is often mistaken as engagement!

Fiona talks about how culture is the system and the rules that determine what it takes to belong and to fit into a group. We discuss how often people will do almost anything to fit into a group. We also talk about how engagement can be confused with culture where as engagement is how people engage with that system.

We also talk about unwritten rules and behaviours of groups and how these are interpreted plus how strategy and culture can work together.

Fiona is so passionate about culture that she has written a book, called the 'Rules of Belonging'. I'm sure that you will find this chat as fascinating as I did and it will give you great insight into the world of culture.

Creating Mind, Body and Spirit with Ivy Evenden!

Creating Mind, Body and Spirit with Ivy Evenden!

In this weeks episode of the Lady Leadership podcast I caught up with my good friend and yogi - Ivy Evenden.

Ivy is a passionate entrepreneur that has turned what was a passion of having a yoga practice into a thriving business - Liquid Room - yoga and float studio. Ivy didn't start out wanting to own her own business but after mastering her own practice she wanted to learn more about the practice and as such did teacher training. This lead to her being asked to teach and realising that she had a passion for teaching. Once she learned about the benefits of floating - she created Liquid Room. Her own business.

We talk about the benefits of having a yoga practice, we discuss creating spirituality and awareness through repetitive movement. Relaxing your mind and your body and not having to be in fight or flight! Plus being present.

There are so many great messages in this podcast that you could incorporate into your own career - such as creating social media - 6 months before she even opened! And we discuss how to engage with customers and share your journey and the trust that you can create with them.

This is a great podcast and worth more than one listen!

Ever wondered what it takes to get to C suite?

Ever wondered what it takes to get to C suite?

Ever wondered what it takes to get to the C suite?

A few of my listeners asked recently about my journey and how did I go from the helpdesk to being a CIO.

Here I share some of my strategies for growing and developing your career.

    I discuss:

    1. Saying yes - to opportunity, to new work and new skills.
    2. Being outcome and delivery focused - how can I rather than how can't I.
    3. What's the next job and the job after that.
    4. Who have you got around?

This is a nice short one! Have a listen - get in touch if you are interested in finding out more.

Building great teams, talent and culture that delivers and transforms what organisations do!

Building great teams, talent and culture that delivers and transforms what organisations do!

In this episode of the Lady leadership podcast I talk about some of the ways that I build great teams that deliver and transform the work that organisations do!

I talk about how I manage work priorities for really large pieces of work and big organisations and how I make work visible with the team.  I talk about working on less and only starting what you can finish plus not starting before you start.

Ever wondered how a fish finger is made? Well I know exactly how and then all the processes around that fish finger to get it from the trawler to the checkout - I know this from following the work. How much do you think about work in terms of value add and failure demand? Which of these processes are really required?

And do you really know your people? Are you really spending time with them?

There a lot to discuss in this weeks episode of Lady Leadership! Check it out!

    Cheers Sam.

I often get asked how I made it from the Helpdesk to the C suite?

How did I make it happen?

I recently got asked by friend to discuss my career and how I work with her colleague.
My friend's colleague was trying to decide where to take her career next, what did she want to pursue and how? She was really interested in the way that I work and how I organise myself.

As such I decided that I would make a podcast about this.

Therefore in this week's episode of the podcast I discuss:

    - How I manage myself including how I keep myself accountable.
    -How I manage my team
-How I collaborate with colleagues, stakeholders and executives
    And
    -How I deliver strategy work.

I hope that you enjoy this weeks episode of Lady Leadership and hope that you get some ideas from this to help you in your career.

How can I improve my Cybersecurity with Claire Pales

How can I improve my Cybersecurity with Claire Pales

With more people working from home and more people connecting with each other through technology I thought it would be great to catch up with Cybersecurity expert - Claire Pales.

Claire runs a Cybersecurity company called 27Lanterns - she specialises in helping companies understand their security requirements and hire the right people for the organisation at the right time. Her model is to step into the Chief Security Officer role - help the organisation navigate their security concerns and then replace herself in that role. 27Lanterns came about because she realised that those that were trying to hire security teams did not necessarily have the background nor the skillset to do so.

Claire has also written a book called the Secure CIO that works through her framework that assist companies to work through their security requirements and hire the right security people and strategy to take the business forward. She also has a podcast were she interviews many CIO’s on how they have built their security teams.

Prior to running her own business Claire had grown her career at multiple large organisation and across many countries. We discuss the skills shortage in security, we discuss women in IT and security and we discussed the importance of networking and maintaining networks and how important they are if you spend some time overseas.

We talked about sharing your data, how well do you know companies and trust them with your information, and the data of your children and the importance of password security especially for children.

We also talk about where is Australia in line with the rest of world with Cybersecurity? Are we are experiencing the same threats as the rest of the world? Does Australia need to uplift their maturity.

We finish with ‘if you are a CIO’ what should you be focusing on at the moment.

I absolutely loved this chat with Claire - I am so impressed with her experience, her career and the business that she has created. Hope you get as much out of this chat as I did.

    Check out Claires business: www.27lanterns.com
Her book: The Secure CIO - Claire Pales

And we discussed Margot Andersens business - InSync Network Group.

How can I get more confident in my Career? Talking Confidence, Fear and Mindfullness with Jane Pike.

How can I get more confident in my Career? Talking Confidence, Fear and Mindfullness with Jane Pike.

How is your inner voice? Jane calls this the 'Itty Bitty Shitty' committee - that little voice inside your head that tells you that you can't do something. This is something that I personally have struggled with over the years - especially in relation to my career.

Jane works on mindset, confidence and emotional resilience for equestrians. It takes a lot of confidence to get on and ride around on horses or even develop a relationship with them on the ground. Jane grew up in a family that breed and competed horses but not being an adrenaline junky - she knew the anxiety that can come with competition and being on a horse.

After years of exploring her career path, Jane created the company Confident rider. I have been following Jane's work for quite a number of years and knew she was the perfect guest for Lady Leadership.

We all face the fears of not being good enough in everyday life and in our careers.

In this chat we talk about 'faking it till you make it ' how it doesn't really work, we discuss women having a voice, we talk flow and pushing yourself outside your boundaries. Plus we also chat about looking at goals in a different way and how starting to practice the smallest part of dreams can help you reach them.

I love the work that Jane does and I am sure that you will get lots of great insights from this.

    Enjoy!

How do I survive Home schooling with Billy Flynn

How do I survive Home schooling with Billy Flynn

Is home schooling better? Better for who?

Better for our children, allowing them to know themselves better and make better choices, leading to more fulfilled lives.

As the nation heads into a potential term of school from home - I thought that home schooling and school from home would be a great topic to discuss.

As such, I am very excited to have my first guest on the Lady Leadership podcast - Billy Flynn!

Billy is ‘as you would say’ is ‘educated’. Billy went to Geelong Grammar, she studied Industrial Engineering at Melbourne Uni and then went on to study an MBA. She has also worked at many organisations in engineering, customer service, change and transformation. She is a life long learner and is curious about the world around her and her family.

Why then would someone like Billy decide that the best way to school her young son Bucky is home schooling. Billy realised though that even with all this education that she didn’t really know who she was and what was her purpose, until a lot later in life!

In this episode we discuss Billy’s reasons for homeschooling and the principles that she has developed over the last 5 years and what does a day look like for Billy and Bucky.

    We discuss

    1. Self directed learning.
    2. Being out in the world and learning.
    3. Exploring yourself and knowing yourself.
    4. Children have a right to their own childhood and a right to play.
    5. Life is good and fun.
    6. Consumption vs Creativity. A 50 - 50 model.

We even discuss Bucky’s thoughts on home schooling.

The resources that Billy mentions in the podcast are:

John Taylor Gatto - 'Dumming us Down' & 'Weapons of Mass Instruction'

Alfie Kohn - 'No Contest' & 'Unconditional Parenting' + he has many other books on Education

Russell Ackoff & Daniel Greenberg - 'Turning Learning Right Side Up'

Bruno Bettleheim - 'The Uses of Enchantment: The Meaning and Importance of Fairy Tales' + there are many others

    A. S. Neill - 'Summerhill; a radical approach to child rearing'

I would like to thank Billy for her time and absolutely loved this catch up.
