Your Owner's Manual - The Employee Handbook

Your Owner's Manual - The Employee Handbook

    S1 E12

Title:  The Owner’s Manual – Your Employee Handbook

    Host: Helen G. Sneed

Ready to drive your future forward?

Then you’re in the right place!

Let's step inside the Career Suite, where Career conversations begin with you!

Welcome to "The Suite," and thank you for joining me today.  Previously, in episode #11, we discussed the importance of checking for three things before leaving the house: your cell phone, keys, and wallet, as well as their workplace equivalents - the company's mission, your department's goals, and a pay-for-performance system.  As we delve deeper into the topic of performance, consider your most recent automobile purchase. Just like your car came with a vehicle owner's manual as a guide for maintenance and optimal performance, think of this discussion as a similar resource for your own performance. Your employee handbook helps to navigate your Career GPS and achieve ideal performance.

This brings me to the question inside "The Suite" today: Do you fully understand the contents of your employee handbook and know who to go to for questions and clarification?

One of your goals is understanding the company policies, procedures, and expectations.  By reading and understanding the employee handbook, you can ensure that you know the rules and guidelines you need to follow while working there.  This will help minimize misunderstandings or mistakes that could cost you money, your job, and your reputation.   If your employer doesn't have an employee handbook, or it hasn’t been updated within the past twelve months then you’ve just increased the likelihood of “not meeting” expectations.

A well-designed employee handbook will provide you with valuable information about your rights, shared responsibilities and benefits as an employee, as well as details about how to handle various situations that may arise in the workplace.  Reading the employee handbook is essential in becoming a knowledgeable, well-informed, and a responsible team member.

If you need help understanding, updating or designing an employee handbook email me and include your name and the organization to CEO@thecareersuite.com.  I'm Helen G. Sneed; join me again in “The Career Suite”, where I promise to save you a seat!  You'll be glad you did!

It's the last episode of 2022, which means it's time for everyone's favourite format at this time of year: the annual review.

Do you review the ups and downs of the previous year? Do you set goals for the following year? We don't need to get too corporate about it, but since we don't have a boss to do a performance review, we have to do our own.

In this episode, I share my review process, reflect on 2022 and share three wins and three not-so-wins.

You'll also hear how I'm setting my goals for 2023 and how my business will have to change as a result.

083 How to reach your 2022 potential

What milestones will you set for 2022?

As we look back and look forward it's a great time to evaluate exactly what we what from our businesses. I hear a lot of people talking about financial freedom and earning mega bucks especially in the online world but there is something to be said for being content and happy in the now. Maybe that means I won't be what others consider financially successful but for me my ultimate goal is to enjoy my family and be able to afford to do that. That doesn't take millions of pounds. So think long and hard about what you truly want and how your business can help you get there.

In today's show, we will be discussing ...

    1. Review the terminology your use goals vs milestones
    2. Take a look back on 2021
    3. Set some targets for 2022
    4. Break up your targets

#42 - Annual Review That Actually Advances Your Career

#42 - Annual Review That Actually Advances Your Career

Do you want to move up within your company or organization? Do you fear your career development is stagnant? Are your goals aligned with your boss' goals, or do they differ? These are common midcareer concerns.

If you have big growth goals but zero explicit plans to make them happen, today’s your day to turn it around. Most people dread their annual reviews because they don’t know what to discuss - or how to discuss - what they really should be addressing with their boss.  In fact, many people don’t even realize that they can use the opportunity to take some control. Sounds appealing? This episode is for you.

In this episode of The Career Rx we’ll discuss:

    • Four things you should discuss with your boss to help you advance thoughtfully
    • Where to find additional (and deliberate!) growth opportunities
    • How to approach “succession planning” - not just for royalty!

Today we're going to be talking about your annual review and how to actually leverage this time for your own benefit (instead of sweating the evaluation and feedback that makes so many people really nervous).  This topic came directly from the listener question, as usual.  Mitch writes, “Thank you so much for Episode 29 about how to get the best results using recruiters [we were talking about nonclinical career transitions, among other things]. But what about if you want to move up within your (current) company or organization?” So, in this episode we’re going to cover some strategies to plot your career growth in a deliberate way that accelerates your advancement, whether that’s within your own organization or a new one.

Listen in to hear four topics you should discuss with your boss during your annual (quarterly, or monthly) review. I'm sharing how to navigate having a transparent discussion about compensation, long-term goals, and gaining a deeper understanding of your company’s  succession plans (or lack thereof).

“You should never have your career development on hold.” - Marjorie Stiegler

    In this Episode:

[01:16] Why you should never put your career development on ‘pause’ for the sake of getting the current work done

[02:45] An easy way to set up potentially difficult conversations with your boss

[3:30] What most people get wrong when writing goals and objectives (hint: it’s not about the SMART framework)

[5:52] What work will actually get you promoted, and what simply isn’t going to get you there. (Note - it matters how you frame and brand your work.)

[6:42] How does your salary compare to what you’re really worth? Find out...

[8:48] What will get you to the next level? You may have some skill or experience gaps - here’s how to fill them.

[10:42] Succession planning, and why your boss/organziation should absolutely be on board with it

[13:36] Documentation and timeline for your intended next move - it matters more than you may realize

[15:44] Evaluating your promotion plan and next steps

3 Easy Things To Help You Be Happier In 2021 EP#032

This week we are taking a look back at 2020 for our annual review to set ourselves up for greater happiness in 2021.  We are doing this with a focus on gratitude, forgiveness and optimism.  We can only move ahead into 2021 with evaluated experience when we take an honest look at the past year and learn from it.   Before we can welcome the new year with an open mind, we must first properly acknowledge the lessons of 2020.  As Angela Duckworth said, "When you keep looking for ways of changing things for the better, you stand a better chance of finding them!"
