64: Supportive parenting styles that enable teens to grow into capable adults.

We all want the best for our kids, but there's a tricky balancing act between giving them the freedom to make the mistakes that build resiliency, and stepping in to protect and guide them.

There's been a modern shift towards close management of our kids, and a constant eye on academic grades. But it's worth considering how to ensure our desire to support them doesn't end up having unintended consequences; stripping them of their ambition, self advocacy, and desire to tackle things in life that are hard.

It's also worth considering how we parents will feel when that all-encompassing role begins to fade and they need to live life independent of us.

This episode takes a look at some of the modern styles of parenting, including the benefits and the problems in terms of turning out rounded adults. We also look at steps we can take to increase agency in our older teens in a way that will ease them into adulthood.

If you're committed enough to listen to the very end you'll also hear our blooper.

Finding The Cure For Spiritual Apathy

Finding The Cure For Spiritual Apathy

Apathy is a word meaning "lack of interest, enthusiasm, or concern."  Spiritually-speaking, it is a dangerous road to go down.  There may be seasons in which we feel a pull towards apathy in our lives.  Left unchecked, we can succumb to a number of things.  But if we recognize those seasons, what are some ways we can be spurred on to grow in Christ?  Today's episode outlines some ideas and practical steps that can help us avoid or pull out of apathy.  The bottom line is also addressed:  apathy stems from a place of loneliness and that loneliness is birthed in a lack of intimacy.  So if we are apathetic, it follows that our intimacy with the Lord is not where it should be.

Day 267: Indifference and Apathy (2023)
Fr. Mike introduces us to the books of Ezra and Haggai, explaining the Israelites' return to the promised land. He also warns us against apathy and indifference in our relationship with God, as we see Israel display towards the temple. Today's readings are Ezra 1-2, Haggai 1-2, and Proverbs 20:1-3. The Uyghurs; World Politics and Muslim Apathy | The London Circle

The Uyghurs; World Politics and Muslim Apathy | The London Circle

    | The London Circle | 09 Aug 2023

Why is the cause of the Uyghurs so complicated, and why is the world divided so deeply over where to stand thereon? Despite public denouncements of China over the cultural genocide perpetrated against the Uyghurs, little is being done in real terms to either bring the Chinese regime to account or to offer actual help and assistance to the victims.

In a recent United Nations vote, the majority of Muslim countries failed to vote against China over its treatment of the Uyghur Muslims. This as well as a widespread apathy on behalf of the Muslim world baffles the Uyghurs and their supporters around the world.

The measure of crimes committed against the people of East Turkistan is difficult to quantify and affects them on every level, even in the privacy of their own homes.

Anas Altikriti talks to Abdul Hakim Idris and Salman Butt about what the Uyghurs dream of achieving and what ought to be done on behalf of Muslims and global activist.

Building a Culture of Empathy with Kyle McDowell

Building a Culture of Empathy with Kyle McDowell

“We are in an environment where everyone's opinion matters, as long as it has data or experience behind it.” - Kyle McDowell

    Episode Summary:

    Begin with WE!

Kyle McDowell joins SF25 to discuss a new type of leadership and team building focused on 10 principles. Understand how Kyle is making a difference in lives worldwide and how you can apply these principles today.

    About Kyle McDowell:

Kyle McDowell is a USA Today and WSJ bestselling author, speaker, and leadership expert.

For nearly three decades, McDowell has amassed an impressive track record of delivering great business results while leading tens of thousands of employees at some of America’s largest corporations, including United Health  Group, CVS Health, and Bank of America.

However in spite of those results, McDowell found himself unfilled and apathetic toward the environments he actually helped to create.

He knew there had to be a better way.

If he was going to make a lasting difference, McDowell knew he needed to lead differently. He wanted to be the leader he never had. He knew people shouldn’t come to work with fear in their hearts.

He turned his back on the big paycheck and golden handcuffs to launch Kyle McDowell Inc., a global leadership and cultural transformation firm committed to developing authentic and courageous leaders who have a passion for cultivating a better, WE-oriented, work life.

With this realization, he crafted his guiding principles for life and leadership, THE 10 WEs.

    1. WE do the right thing. Always.

    2. WE lead by example.

    3. WE say what WE’re going to do. Then WE do it.

    4. WE take action.

    5. WE own our mistakes.

    6. WE pick each other up.

    7. WE measure ourselves by outcomes. Not activity.

    8. WE challenge each other.

    9. WE embrace challenge.

    10. WE obsess over details.

These ten principles would go on to be McDowell’s code of behavior, first for himself, and then for those he led. No difference – no leadership gap. It was how strongly the principles resonated from the new intern to the tenured Sr.  Executive – from tiny cubicle to corner office which compelled McDowell to think bigger.

“With my whole heart, I suddenly realized this is my purpose on this planet. To develop caring leaders who want to leave a legacy that lasts well beyond their tenure with any organization. I’m on a mission to rid corporate America of  the toxic traits so many of us of witnessed and even endorsed at times.”

The mission included writing his first book, the Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestseller, Begin With WE: 10  Principles for Building and Sustaining a Culture of Excellence.

Today McDowell is regularly invited to speak at business, educational, and nonprofit institutions and events, and has been featured in major national publications, such as The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and Inc. Magazine.

McDowell holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Florida and an MBA from Northwestern University’s  Kellogg School of Management. He lives in Tampa, Florida.

    The 'Apathetic' Leader

It is Easter Weekend and this edition of the Courageous Police Leadership Podcast discusses the dangers that apathetic leadership has caused in the law enforcement profession.

Travis portrays the decision by Pontius Pilate, the Governor of Rome from 26 to 37 AD., and his attempt to avoid the blame in the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and how leaders today continue laying the blame on others while using apathy as an excuse.

60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday: What Might the World Need to Hear From You?

60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday: What Might the World Need to Hear From You?

Hello to you listening in Front Royal, Virginia!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday and your host, Diane Wyzga.

I’ve been asked, What one thing do you offer that no one else does? Here’s my answer: “I listen keenly and then tell the world something it needs to hear.” Perhaps like these borrowed words:

"Lord, make me a channel of disturbance.

Where there is apathy, let me provoke

Where there is mindless compliance, let me bring questioning

Where there is silence, may I encourage voices to be heard

Where there is too much turning away and too little action, grant me disruption for community’s sake

When laws dictate that pain is ignored

When tradition speaks louder than need

Grant that I may seek to do some good rather than talk about what needs doing." [Anon]

Question: What about you? What one thing do you offer to the world that no one else does?
