Building a honey farm business with innovative marketing, agritourism and education with Tara Chapman of Two Hives Honey

Building a honey farm business with innovative marketing, agritourism and education with Tara Chapman of Two Hives Honey

Just your typical CIA to honey farmer story on this podcast! Tara Chapman of Two Hives Honey talks with host Katie Kulla  about starting and scaling a honey business, with education and agritourism as important parts of the plan. After a decade of working for The Agency, Tara quit her government job to work for a beekeeper in East Texas, and was inspired to start her own unique honey business.

Two Hives Honey sells raw honey direct to consumers through its online store and a monthly subscription program. They also offer multiple education opportunities through on-site honey tasting, tours, and beekeeper classes. In addition to an interesting story, we learn a lot along the way about pitching an ag business in a tech world, operating a lean business and scaling up only as needed, and incorporating education and agritourism into a farm business model.

Tara also has a lot of insight to share with our listeners on how she built a business out of honey and beekeeping through an innovative combination of farming and marketing. Two Hives Honey has quickly evolved and has grown into a socially conscious business and team that aims to educate their community, provide unique honey and bee experiences, and share why real, raw honey is the best honey!

In Shop Talk with Neversink Farm, we chat about new tools, old tools, how they can benefit your farm and tips to use them successfully with Conor Crickmore of Neversink Tools, which manufactures tools for farmers.

In this episode of Shop Talk with Neversink Farm, we discuss how to get the right spacing for different crops with paperpot transplanters is the subject of this episode of Shop Talk. We talk about what spacings are possible with paper chain pots and learn when it is appropriate to use techniques like skipping cells for spacings outside of what is sold off the shelf, to get the right spacing for any crop.

H3irloom Food Group on Cooking and Urban Agriculture

H3irloom Food Group on Cooking and Urban Agriculture

For the first time in Fields history, Wythe and Melissa interview four urban growers at once! We speak to the principles of H3irloom Food GroupLinda and Floyd Taliaferro, and David and Tonya Thomas—about their simultaneously innovative and tradition-inspired approach to cooking and growing, as well as their educational initiatives using agriculture.

Longtime collaborators with local farmers, the H3irloom Food Group is currently developing their own 68-acre farm, Gabriel Fields, just outside of Baltimore (in Baltimore County). Through growing and cooking, they’re connecting their culinary work to a tradition of land stewardship in the Mid-Atlantic that goes back to the arrival of enslaved Africans on Turtle Island/North America.

H3irloom uses delicious food, sourced locally, to help tell important stories about Black food traditions, especially in and around Baltimore. Join Melissa and Wythe for another powerful conversation about the roles that growing food plays in culture, both in and beyond the kitchen! And stay tuned as we catch up with H3irloom regarding their farm in the near future.

No Honey For You: What's Killing Aussie Bees

No Honey For You: What's Killing Aussie Bees

You may have heard some news reports about a new infestation of varroa mites that are infecting millions of bees in NSW, threatening the whole of Australia's honey industry as beekeepers are being forced to destroy tens of thousands of hives.

But what exactly are these tiny insects, why is this happening now, and what is the risk to all of Australia's agricultural sector if there are not enough bees left to pollinate our crops?

The Quicky speaks to a beekeeper and an expert in food resources to find out if this could destroy Australia's honey industry, or if there is a way to turn this situation to our advantage.

60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday: Beekeeping Silence Magic & Sacredness

60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday: Beekeeping Silence Magic & Sacredness

Hello to you listening in Green Bay, Wisconsin!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday with your host Diane Wyzga.

When I tended honeybees in my apiary on an organic farm I would often sit on the ground with my ear pressed against the side of a hive box listening to the thrum of activity, the colony of worker bees living their lives, giving it their all in the 5 or 6 weeks of life allotted to them.

As the time allotted to me winds down I’m aware that death is certain, but the time of death is uncertain. Of course, I have no clue how much time is left to fulfill the potential of my precious human birth. So, it’s even more urgent to ask myself where did the day go? What did I do? Who did I help? What do I have to show for these hours? Maybe you’re like me.

Practical Tip: Let’s stop and ask ourselves: What is the single best use of this day in my life? Sit quietly and breathe deeply to create a still space, slow the worrying, the mind chatter. Silence will dawn with all its magic and sacredness. In that stillness you will have your answer.

60 Seconds is your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that. This is the place to thrive together. Come for the stories - stay for the magic. Speaking of magic, I hope you’ll subscribe, follow, share a nice shout out on your social media or podcast channel of choice, including Android, and join us next time! 37 - Dan Molyneux

    37 - Dan Molyneux

Our guest this week on Let’s Meet For A Beer is the CEO of Alberta’s Fallentimber Meadery, Dan Molyneux. Dan fills us in on the story of how a hobby apiary grew over two generations to become one of Alberta’s most innovative beverage producers.

The story of Fallentimber Meadery begins two generations ago with Dan’s grandfather starting a small hobby farm for beekeeping. The farm would later be passed on to Dan’s uncle who would expand honey production that of a small scale commercial apiary, which was able to support a single person. When the time came for succession planning the family was faced with the same challenge as with many family farms, how to get the next generation on board with taking it on. The problem of only producing enough honey to support the income of a single person made this especially challenging, which was compounded by Dan’s cousin and business partner Nathan’s ironic allergy to bees and made expanding honey production an unlikely road forward.

At the time Nathan was going to Mount Royal for tourism and submitted a business plan for a meadery as part of one of his business classes. The model was simple let unique, they would add value to the honey he already had in an approach similar to an estate winery: when you are growing the best grapes you can make the best wine, and they already had this great honey just waiting to be fermented into mead.

Today Fallentimber supports many members of their family including Dan’s brother managing sales, his uncle as head beekeeper, his Aunt in HR and another cousin in admin. Around the province they’ve garnered massive praise for innovative products like their Hopped Mead, Honeybuck, Mr Pink, and the legendary Meadjito. Mark and Dan recall the story of 40 year Sierra Nevada brewer Steve Dressler sampling the Meadjito at an prior Jasper Beer Festival and having his mind blown. Steve told Mark that in 40 years in the industry he’d thought he’d tried everything, and made sure Dan and Nathan knew they had the most innovative product at that festival by a landslide.
