It’s all very interesting! You'll McLove it!

IT AIN'T NO GAME BUT I WANT AN AWARD - 2023 Game Awards Discussion

IT AIN'T NO GAME BUT I WANT AN AWARD - 2023 Game Awards Discussion

Some of the biggest nights for entertainment have always been award shows. When the Oscars or the Grammy’s happen you always hear tons of people from the mainstream media, news outlets, your mother talk about it. It seems unavoidable after it happens. So, music and film have always had a level of respect, something that is still trying to break into a level of respect like these forms of entertainment are video games.

The Game Awards are an award show hosted by Geoff Keighley and it has been going on since December 5th 2014. The game awards are an award show focused on rewarding and appreciating some of the best video games and creators in the industry. It’s streamed on an insane number of platforms throughout the internet being YouTube, Twitch, Steam, Twitter, TikTok, Instagram, Kick, Facebook Live, etc.

In this episode I'm joined by Mallory Webster, whose been playing various games with me since elementary school and we developed a tradition of watching the yearly game awards with each other and having fun talking about our personal takes and opinions.

If you want to hear some insightful takes and predictions for the 2023 game awards! Maybe the Street Fighter modern controls or the billion dollar-brilliance of the Mario movie, you're in the right place.

Nici Wickes: Asparagus & Blue Cheese Tart

Nici Wickes: Asparagus & Blue Cheese Tart

To celebrate the abundance of asparagus available right now, make this simple tasty tart.

    Serve 4-6

    Ingredients:

2 bunches (or about 20) medium thickness asparagus spears

    1 sheet puff pastry

1 egg, beaten with a fork

150g sour cream or crème fraiche

    100g blue cheese, crumbled

2 tablespoons caramelised onion chutney (store-bought is fine)

½ teaspoon sea salt + decent grind black pepper

    Drizzle of olive oil

    Method:

    1. Heat oven to 200 C.
    2. Trim or snap the tough ends off the asparagus spears.
    3. Line a tray with the pastry, twisting and pinching up the edges to form a rim if you need to. Brush the edges with the beaten egg.
    4. Whisk together the remaining egg with sour cream (or crème fraiche), ¾ of the blue cheese and onion. Spread this over the pastry. Lay the trimmed asparagus on top, season with salt and pepper and drizzle over olive oil.
    5. Bake for 30 minutes, until the pastry is golden and cooked on the base too.
    6. To serve, grind over some more pepper and crumble over remaining blue cheese.

    Make it yours:

You could add chopped, crispy bacon or flakes of smoked salmon to this tart if you fancy it!

The Silly, The Satire, And The Sincere (Featuring Evan Ostrowalker)

The Silly, The Satire, And The Sincere (Featuring Evan Ostrowalker)

The internet is no stranger to humorous and strange music. Maybe you love those funny Rhett and Link videos about a robot fixing all of humanities problems with bacon, or maybe you like the one about a Duck going to a lemonade stand everyday and asking the man behind the counter for grapes. One thing is for sure this style of satirical music has placed a permanent spot in internet culture.

Evan my guest makes electronic music under the Ostrowalker name on Spotify and decided to make a parody brand of Hyperpop under the name "Gyko" basically being non sensical internet interferences and samples and high pitched and aggressive lyrics about death and being angry. Evan also has a brand of music under the fishfashfood label that focuses with more wacky and silly ideas, the music is original but the ideas are sillier and wackier like ideas you would see in most song parodies. Songs under the fishfashfood label would be music about “milk, a song about a dislike of politics, and somebody that spends all day on Twitch looking for hot tub streamers, and the list goes on”

Join me and Evan Ostrowalker as we dive deep into the Popping Point that is satirical songs and why that line between serious and silly can sometimes be very thin!

Music used in this episode are by Ostrowalker! Check out their Spotify @Ostrowalker

Some Thugs Deserve Love (Passionate) - Yakuza/Like a Dragon Series Discussion

Some Thugs Deserve Love (Passionate) - Yakuza/Like a Dragon Series Discussion

The Yakuza games are gritty, heart wrenching story focused games about an ex-yakuza member with a heart of gold trying to live a normal life but consistently being dragged into some new mess, and some other guys too I guess, but doesn’t that sound like a bit much? Sometimes the game you’re playing is too tense and serious you just want to play another game but you don’t feel like quitting the game you’re playing. The Yakuza franchise is the king of having other things to do and play in terms of distracting yourself with shiny objects. From baseball, boxing, death go karting, disco dancing, drone racing, competitive peeing, wood cutting, crane games and much more. The Yakuza games have plenty of other games to play in them. In this episode I’ll be talking about how brilliant this franchise is at keeping somebodies’ attention when they start to tune out. Sometimes changing the game is exactly what you need to keep the game from getting boring! Tune into this podcast to hear some of the many reasons why the Like a Dragon/Yakuza series has become so popular! In this episode my guest and Aniki is Matthew Miller, he is an Algonquin Alumni and he is also quiet the hardcore gamer, he's been playing the Like a Dragon series since 2017 when Yakuza 0 came out and has been a fan ever since. He's going to be with me today to talk about what makes the series so special to him.

    Summer Foods for Better Health

    Summer Foods for Better Health

Boy, we should NOT sing! Ha! Ha! But we're on the brink of summertime and that is reason to SING!

Most of us think of running through sprinklers, going to the beach, the smell of freshly cut grass and the sounds of children in summer. But summer is also time of tremendous bounty of fresh foods! So what do we eat in the summertime? Generally, we think of cooling foods, foods with high water content and foods we can eat outside during summer. This could be anything from watermelon, to summer squash, to crispy lettuces, to crunchy cucumbers.

In this episode of the Midlife Mommas we talk about OUR favorites summertime foods. We discuss how we discover new ways to prepare old favorites, and how to stretch a meal (a favorite topic for Amelia and Cam).

Join us for this fun and inspiring episode....and please forgive the crappy musical opening.

Jen Zavalnitskaya about Habitat Management of Asparagus Pests

Jen Zavalnitskaya about Habitat Management of Asparagus Pests

On this week’s The Sci-Files, your hosts Chelsie and Danny interview Jen Zavalnitskaya. Jen is a second-year master's student in the Department of Entomology in the Vegetable Entomology lab. She studies insect ecology throughout agricultural landscapes and how more sustainable pest management strategies can be created in commercial agriculture. Most commercial vegetable cropping systems rely on chemical insecticides to suppress insect pests which can often be detrimental both economically and environmentally. Jen's research focuses on using habitat management within agriculture to better control insect pests. Her current work is focused on the overwintering biology of a key pest of asparagus, the asparagus beetle. Michigan is the top producer of asparagus in the nation. Thus, control of this pest is incredibly important to Michigan's asparagus farmers and economy. Jen hopes that by understanding more about the overwintering biology of asparagus beetles, Michigan's asparagus farmers can better understand how to manage habitat for more sustainable and effective pest management.
If you’re interested in talking about your MSU research on the radio or nominating a student, please email Chelsie and Danny at scifiles@impact89fm.org. Check The Sci-Files out on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube
