Sometimes the work of organizing is too overwhelming for one person to tackle, so we ask for help. But helpers who aren’t sensitive to our goals, priorities, and emotional needs can create more problems than they solve. In episode #109 of The Clutter Fairy Weekly, Gayle Goddard, professional organizer and owner of The Clutter Fairy in Houston, Texas, offers guidance on asking for help with your decluttering projects or offering your assistance to others who need it.

Humanitarian Intervention - For Better or Worse?

Humanitarian Intervention - For Better or Worse?

Is there a case for humanitarian intervention? In this episode, Aarthi Ratnam and Priyal Lyncia D’Almeida discuss the criteria for intervention and the scope of responsibility. To identify what these cases are, they propose the "conditions of exceptionalism", by looking at historical examples of mass violence. They also highlight the importance of post-intervention responsibilities of the international community.

    Eretta Perry - A Veteran's Choice

    Eretta Perry - A Veteran's Choice

Eretta learned the importance of giving back at an early age. She grew up in a family full of Veterans, from her father who was a well-known cowboy and Army veteran, to her older brother, as well a her husband, A Vet's Choice Co-Founder, Harold O. Perry.

She later devoted 20 years of her life to teaching and then became a Real Estate Consultant, an Entrepreneur and a Philanthropist. Her upbringing and compassion for people never departed from her.

Twenty eight percent of Greater Houston's homeless population are veterans (approximately 3,600). 5-10% of Houston's homeless are women veterans. About 45% of homeless veterans suffer from mental illness. With a special affinity towards helping our veterans, Eretta and her husband have always prayed to be part of the answer to these problems.

Being part of the answer is what led her to found Love And Hope For Our Heroes, an organization focused on creating stable, vibrant and healthy communities by providing affordable, service-led housing. We serve people with special needs with the full spectrum of affordable housing, including elder care, mental health, VA housing, halfway homes, assisted living, sober homes and much more.

"True happiness consists in giving and serving others; that is the meaning of life" -Eretta

You Will Always Have the Poor

You Will Always Have the Poor

A devotional study about Christian service and our responsibilities to our fellow human beings -- particularly those of the household of faith.

    Matthew 26:10-11 KJV
When Jesus understood it, He said unto them, “Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon Me. For ye have the poor always with you; but Me ye have not always.”

NOTE: The overall story of Mary Magdalene can be found in all four gospels, but Jesus' response about the poor, is found only in Matthew, Mark, and John -- but not Luke.

#215: Benefits Breakdown, Intimate Partner Violence Assistance Program

#215: Benefits Breakdown, Intimate Partner Violence Assistance Program

According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), 1 in 4 women and 1 in 10 men experience intimate partner violence (IPV) during their lifetime. Veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injuries are at an even greater risk for IPV. Yet, both victims and perpetrators of IPV oftentimes don't seek help. They are instead motivated by feelings of shame, guilt, embarrassment, or fear to keep quiet and accept the violence around them.

Dr. LeAnn Bruce, National Program Manager for the Intimate Partner Violence Assistance Program (IPVAP), joins this week’s episode of Borne the Battle to share why no one should ever feel ashamed to seek IPV support and describes what services VA offers to help Veterans in need. Among the issues Dr. Bruce discussed include:

With COVID-19 and natural disasters disrupting lives across the country, promoting IPV awareness will be more crucial than ever during this October’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Moments of crisis or long periods of isolation can amplify violence in relationship conflicts or abusive situations. IPVAP coordinators remain ready at every VA Medical Center to guide any Veteran or their partner in the right direction.

VHA also encourages everyone to make the White Ribbon VA Pledge to stop violence against others. In acknowledging the ways violence and harassment can manifest, the world can become a safer place for everyone.

If in need of 24/7 support, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1−800−799−7233 (SAFE) or TTY 1−800−787−3224.

E66: Ruth Busalacchi - Helping Seniors Age Safely

E66: Ruth Busalacchi - Helping Seniors Age Safely

    In Ruth's own words:

I was inspired to open my own Home Care Service after my family’s experience.  I too called upon a Professional Home Care Service when my parents needed assistance and guidance to manage the complexities of my Father’s Parkinson’s Disease and my Mother’s ever growing role of caregiver. While they were surrounded by high quality Assisted Living Facilities and Retirement Communities, it was their desire to postpone or prevent the need to move out of their home. Professional In-Home Care Service became a critical partner of support.

As a result, my Father was able to make decisions about his care, and my Mother received much needed Respite from the 24 hour role of caregiving.

My family faced many of the same questions and decisions that you and your loved ones are experiencing. As a consequence, I have a greater depth of understanding about the challenges and also rewards when faced with choices about Long or Short Term Care.

At SYNERGY Home Care, we appreciate the importance of making an informed decision for you and your loved one. I encourage you to contact us, share your story and discover how we may serve you and your family!  Learn more at:
