    Colonel Abernathy Swathmore

    Colonel Abernathy Swathmore

In this episode- Oh, wonderful. More poop and barf jokes. And Rita does some atypical sex stuff. Why did I even show up to describe the episode to you today? It’s always the same bull-

I-I’m sorry. I stayed up late after crushing a case of energy drinks, and I’m turbo grouchy. I’m sorry I snapped. I hate when we fight. I love this job, they don’t drug test. Coincidentally, that’s exactly the same thing that happens to Dawn in this episode. Dawn stays up late researching Rita’s family tree. We hear an awful lot about Dawn’s digestive issues. We learn about Colonel Abernathy Swathmore, and a man who hopes to propel himself to Europe on his own farts. Rita violates the Prime Directive, along with one of Dawn’s most cherished special interests. The girls get visitors in the Dreamscape!

The 'hidden histories' of autistic adults

The 'hidden histories' of autistic adults

Over the past two decades, our cultural understanding of autism and what it means to be autistic has grown - though we have a long way to go. But there are entire generations of people who grew up when the popular conception of autism was a far cry from how it’s now understood.

It meant a whole host of people who grew up feeling like they didn’t fit in, but never quite knowing why.

They were autistic, but undiagnosed. And when a diagnosis did come as an adult – it was often revelatory and life-changing.

On All in the Mind this week, 'hidden histories’ of late-diagnosed autistic adults.

Meet Chante Douglas: Author, Echoboy's Mom, Autism Advocate, Single Mom and More

Meet Chante Douglas: Author, Echoboy's Mom, Autism Advocate, Single Mom and More

I had the pleasure of meeting with Chante Douglas, a single mother, an autism advocate, a military veteran having served in the air force and a published author, bring awareness and advocacy about the autism community.

We cover so many topics, including when her son, Levi, was diagnosed, the mental health challenges she has faced, and how she has been working through them. Helping her son with his mental health after he had a 'terrible, terrible day,' which she drew inspiration from for her upcoming book that is going to be released soon called, "Are You Okay?"

She literally turned her son into a superhero, Echoboy, as well as introducing his side-kick, ABC Girl! Driving more representation in the black and brown communities, especially related to autism, is really important to Chante.

Chante has taken her pain and driven it to her purpose, using writing as a way to express herself through her poetry, but also writing childrens books, not only to help other children with autism know they are not alone, but also to educate other children (neurotypical) about autism.

She is an inspiration, through advocating for her son, being vulnerable in sharing her journey and impacting others in a positive way.

Check out the books she has available to purchase (see links below), as well as connect with Chante through the many channels she is available.

Through connection, we can find unity, through unity, we can find solutions and support for each other.

Siena Castellon - Being ruthlessly bullied, not fitting in with neurotypical norms and being awesome and autistic

Siena Castellon - Being ruthlessly bullied, not fitting in with neurotypical norms and being awesome and autistic

Siena Castellon is an 18-year-old advocate, author, mentor and Young Leader for the UN Sustainable Development Goals. She is autistic, has dyslexia, dyspraxia and ADHD. After being eventually diagnosed with autism she wrote The Spectrum Girl's Survival Guide: How to Grow Up Awesome and Autistic, which is a fantastic guide for neurodiverse girls navigating a neurotypical world.

We discuss the stigma around autism in girls; how, because she was undiagnosed and consequently misunderstood by teachers and pupils alike, she was ruthlessly bullied throughout her school life and was failed by a mainstream education system that did not appreciate her learning differences. Getting a diagnosis of autism meant she wanted to support other neurodiverse girls which led her to setting up a mentoring website and writing her book.

She talks about autism as a superpower, about challenging stereotypes and we speak about how we need to support and enable those with autism to thrive in a world that is set up for people who are neurotypical. She talks about Neurodiversity Celebration Week, her conception, which has been adopted by an increasing number of schools in the UK.

Siena is an absolute trailblazer, who is having a huge impact through her work. Her views about how we view neurodiversity are important and her advice will be useful for many people.
