Baseball and BBQ Episode #111: Ryan Cooper and Sean Ludwig, Creators of The Smoke Sheet and NYC BBQ and Lawrence Baldassaro, Author of Tony Lazzeri, Yankees Legend and Baseball Pioneer

Episode #111 features another spectacular visit from Ryan Cooper and Sean Ludwig, creators of The Smoke Sheet and NYC BBQ as well as an interview with author, Lawrence Baldassaro who has written an outstanding book on a New York Yankees legend, Tony Lazzeri.

Ryan Cooper and Sean Ludwig are back and better than ever.  Ryan is the founder of the BBQ Tourist website, https://bbqtourist.com which is dedicated to celebrating the best barbecue in America.  Sean is the founder of NYC BBQ, http://www.nycbbq.com which is a website and newsletter with news and information on all things barbecue in the NYC metro area.  Together they are co-founders of The Smoke Sheet, https://www.bbqnewsletter.com which is a weekly newsletter that curates the latest national barbecue news, upcoming events, books to read, podcasts to list to, videos to watch, recipes, and so much more.  We are thrilled every time they come on and look forward to having them back again.

Lawrence Baldassaro is a prolific author.  Books and articles too numerous to mention in a space this small have flowed from his proverbial pen, landing on paper, and in turn enjoyed by so many.  His latest project is Tony Lazzeri:  Yankees Legend and Baseball Pioneer.  Lazzeri played alongside New York Yankees legends, Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig as part of the Yankees' legendary Murderers' Row.  Lazzeri was afflicted with epilepsy, but he was able to play for 12 years as the second baseman for Yankee teams that won five World Series as well as being their third-most productive hitter.  All of this eventually led to his being enshrined posthumously in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.  Lawrence has written a wonderful book which any baseball fan will be excited to read.

We conclude the show with the song, "Baseball Always Brings You Home" from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky.

Baseball and BBQ Episode #109: Luke Epplin, Author of Our Team and Brie Blackford from Elda's Kitchen

Baseball and BBQ Episode #109: Luke Epplin, Author of Our Team and Brie Blackford from Elda's Kitchen

Episode 109 features an outstanding author and an incredible maker of sauces.

Luke Epplin is an author whose writing has appeared in The Atlantic, The New Yorker, GQ, Slate, Salon, The Daily Beast, and The Paris Review Daily.  His latest project is the book, Our Team:  The Epic Story of Four Men and the World Series That Changed Baseball.  The book traces the fascinating stories of four men, Bill Veeck, Larry Doby, Bob Feller, and Satchel Paige and their significant importance in coming together to help the Cleveland Indians win the 1948 World Series.  Epplin has written an incredible book in which he provides exciting details on individuals who are woven into the fabric of baseball history.  All these years later and we still have a fascination with their careers, and Epplin has provided us with a great baseball book.

Brie Blackford is making her second Baseball and BBQ appearance.  In episode 97 she revealed that we were the first podcast she was on and apparently she enjoyed herself enough to come back.  This time she offered our listeners the chance to win her sauces and four of our listeners did.  She is the co-founder of Elda’s Kitchen, maker of incredible sauces, many of which are perfect for the barbecue.  She is inspired by the wonderful cooking and hospitality of her grandmother, Elda Abronzino.  Brie is loving what she does which  was quite apparent during our conversation.  The sauces are vegan friendly, contain no MSG or preservatives, are non-GMO, gluten-free, and do not have high fructose corn syrup.   You can find Brie and her sauces at https://eldaskitchen.com

We conclude the show with the beautiful song, "Ace and Bobo" from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky.

Baseball and BBQ Episode #108: Irene Hodges and Gary Mack Share Their Reflections and Thoughts on Gil Hodges

Baseball and BBQ Episode #108: Irene Hodges and Gary Mack Share Their Reflections and Thoughts on Gil Hodges

Continuing our attempt to right a long-time wrong, episode 108 features Irene Hodges and Gary Mack as they provide compelling arguments for finally inducting Gil Hodges into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Irene Hodges is the oldest daughter of Gil Hodges.  She was only 20 years old when Gil Hodges passed away, but has many wonderful memories and stories regarding her father.  She would like to see her father enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame, but she feels especially awful for the many fans who push to get him in and are continuously met with disappointment.  Irene is a delightful person to speak with, and she gave great insight into Gil Hodges which goes beyond the player and manager that most fans are familiar with.

Gary Mack is the long-time host of the Mets Musings podcast, as well as hosting the golf related podcast, Chip Shots, and serving as co-host on The Baseball Talk Radio Show along with Rich Baxter.  He has loved the New York Mets since their 1962 inception and has many reasons as to why Gil Hodges should be elected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.  He has been a frequent contributor to this podcast, and we appreciate the insight he provides.

Baseball and BBQ Episode #106: Ed Kranepool, Kevin Kernan, Mike Lecolant, and Sam Maxwell Provide Arguments for Inducting Gil Hodges Into the National Baseball Hall of Fame

Baseball and BBQ Episode #106: Ed Kranepool, Kevin Kernan, Mike Lecolant, and Sam Maxwell Provide Arguments for Inducting Gil Hodges Into the National Baseball Hall of Fame

It's time to right a long-time wrong and episode 106 is our attempt at doing that by featuring Ed Kranepool, Kevin Kernan, Mike Lecolant, and Sam Maxwell as they provide compelling arguments for finally inducting Gil Hodges Into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Ed Kranepool was only 17 years old in 1962 when the expansion team, New York Mets were formed and then spent the next 18 years wearing blue and orange.  Kranepool was an important member  of the 1969 Miracle Mets and when he retired after the 1979 season at the age of 34, he was the all-time Mets leader in eight offensive categories.  He both played with Gil Hodges and played for Gil Hodges as Hodges effectively used player platoons to manage the Mets to their first-ever World Series Championship.  Kranepool uses that experience to give his rather convincing opinions on why Gil Hodges belongs in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Kevin Kernan spent 44 years writing sports for major newspapers, 23 years of them as a columnist at the New York Post and his latest columns are featured on the website, https://ballnine.com/index.html   He was recently inducted into the New York Baseball Hall of Fame.  He knows tons about baseball, not only from his many years covering it, but also from his firsthand experience as a star first baseman for Ramapo College in 1976 and 1977.  Kernan provides strong arguments for finally inducting Gil Hodges into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Mike Lecolant and Sam Maxwell are Brooklyn, New York residents and proud New York Mets fans.  They offer their unique perspective on the effects which Gil Hodges had on the borough of Brooklyn, many of which are still all around them today.  Mike and Sam join their other cohost, Rich Sparago on The Metsian Podcast, https://www.blogtalkradio.com/themetsianpodcastwsamrichandmike and it is a worthwhile listen.   Once you do, you will respect the argument which Lecolant and Maxwell make for Gil Hodges deserving his rightful place in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

The discussions and compelling arguments do not end with this episode.  Come back for episode #108, and we will feature two additional guests who feel just as strongly about Gil Hodge's National Baseball Hall of Fame qualifications and offer their unique perspectives.

We recommend you go to Fifth & Cherry, https://fifthandcherry.com for wonderful cutting boards and http://www.baseballbbq.com for grill tools and clothing for barbecue and baseball fans and the Pandemic Baseball Book Club, https://www.pbbclub.com  to find many of the wonderful books we have featured as well as some additional swag.

Baseball and BBQ Episode #94: Lew Freedman, author of Cy Young: The Baseball Life and Career and Chef, George Georgiades

Baseball and BBQ Episode #94: Lew Freedman, author of Cy Young: The Baseball Life and Career and Chef, George Georgiades

Episode 94's first half is about a baseball legend and then the 2nd half features a cook who may one day be considered a legendary chef, especially when it comes to Greek food.

Lew Freedman is the author of Cy Young:  The Baseball Life and Career.  Pitchers who win the Cy Yong award are considered the best of the best, but other than knowing that Cy Young was a great pitcher with 511 regular season career wins, what else do you really know about Denton "Cy" Young?  Lew has written a book which is filled with fascinating information and wonderful stories about the pitcher against whom all other pitchers are measured.  Lew is a veteran newspaper sportswriter as well as an author of more than 75 books and has been the recipient of over 250 journalism awards.  He brought Cy Young to life for us and hopefully this interview and his book will do the same for you.

George Georgiades is a chef who now specializes in Greek food, but to get there, he has had a past filled with numerous adventures.  George is a wonderfully entertaining guest whose many stories will make you hope the interview goes on and on.  That was our wish too and so we kept him talking as long as possible as he drank some wine and just like that we had enough to make this a two part episode.  In part one, George talks about his humble beginnings and the many influences that have shaped his cooking career, including his yia-yia.  Julia Child, octopus, washing machines, and so many other random fun things are all discussed. George talks about his wonderful restaurants, Eons.  We can't be certain, but George may have even offered us a job.  All this and more and it's only part one.

We conclude the show with the beautiful song, "Baseball Always Brings You Home" from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky.

Baseball and BBQ Episode #87: Marjorie Adams, Baseball Royalty, Steve Ray from Owls Nest BBQ and Gary Looney from Angels Spring Training Camp

Baseball and BBQ Episode #87: Marjorie Adams, Baseball Royalty, Steve Ray from Owls Nest BBQ and Gary Looney from Angels Spring Training Camp

Triple plays are a rarity, but we give you one with episode 87.

Marjorie Adams is the great-granddaughter of Daniel Lucius "Doc" Adams who wrote the 1857 "Laws of Base Ball" as well as creating the shortstop position and is considered to be one of baseball's founders.  The original "Laws of Base Ball" were sold at an auction in 2016 for $3.26 million.  Despite all of this, he is still not a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, but if our guest has anything to do with it, that blatant over site will soon be corrected.  This interview would not be possible without the introduction provided by our episode 86 guest, Jeff Kornhaas who we all know as Pinetar.  Pinetar sits in with us and adds his wonderful contributions to a conversation we hoped would never end.  Please enjoy our talk with someone we consider to be as close to baseball royalty as one can get.

Steve Ray is known to the barbecue world for so many reasons. He is the pitmaster on the Owls Nest BBQ team, owner of the Owls Nest Barbecue Supply Shop in Ooltewah, Tennessee, and he was an embedded correspondent on The BBQ Central Show. He even filled in twice as host for the BBQ Central Show. What is absolutely incredible is that Steve first became interested in barbecue when he saw the television show, BBQ Pitmasters in his 50's, and it sparked a desire which has now become an obsession. We are the fortunate ones he followed this newfound passion as we get to converse with a humble, yet extremely knowledgeable cook.

Gary Looney makes his long awaited return. You may recall that in episode 56 we welcomed Gary as Jeff had met him last year on his visit to spring training in Arizona just prior to the pandemic shutting everything down. We asked Gary to come back on to discuss what spring training during the pandemic is like and he did not disappoint. Gary gave us some great insight and answered our questions on how this year's training camp is unlike any others.

We once again conclude the show with the beautiful song, "Baseball Always Brings You Home" from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky.

Baseball and BBQ Episode #81: Kurt Bevacqua and Doug Scheiding, Talking Baseball Hall of Fame and Barbecue

Baseball and BBQ Episode #81: Kurt Bevacqua and Doug Scheiding, Talking Baseball Hall of Fame and Barbecue

They're baaack!  Two great guests return for a spirited discussion on baseball, including who should get in the MLB Hall of Fame and, of course, barbecue.

Kurt Bevacqua is a 15-year Major League Baseball veteran who played for five different teams, most notably the San Diego Padres.  He not only played in the 1984 World Series, but he hit two home runs in that series.  Staying in the Major Leagues for 15 years is no easy task, but he managed to do that and excel while playing with some of the game's greats.  He knows a ton about the game, and he shares his knowledge and opinions.  He was a huge hit the first time we had him on, and we could not wait to bring him on again.

Doug Scheiding makes a triumphant return and awes us with his incredible baseball knowledge. If you are familiar with his fine work as the longest running embedded correspondent on The BBQ Central Show, you know he is a rocket scientist, an award-winning pitmaster for the Rogue Cookers barbecue competition team, a Traeger Pellet Grills representative, and a Head Country brand ambassador. What you may not know is that he is an avid Chicago Cubs fan and an extremely knowledgeable baseball fan. Doug has very quickly become a fan favorite, and we hope you will enjoy all that he brings to the show.

We once again conclude the show with the beautiful song, "Baseball Always Brings You Home" from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky.

Celebrate our glorious three-year anniversary with episode 78.

We begin and end the episode with several celebratory anniversary messages and in the middle of it all, we release our long awaited and highly anticipated interview with a Hollywood legend.

Robert Wuhl is an actor, comedian and writer.  He is the creator and star of the television series, Arliss in which he played sports agent, Arliss Michaels.  He has had roles in some incredibly iconic movies, including Good Morning Vietnam, Bull Durham, Batman, and The Bodyguard.  Other movies in which he has appeared include The Hollywood Knights, Flashdance, Blaze, Missing Pieces, Mistress, Blue Chips, and Cobb.  He has appeared on The Dating Game and The $10,0000 Pyramid and has had several other writing credits and television roles, including his one-man-show, Assume the Position with Mr. Wuhl and Assume the Position 201 with Mr. Wuhl.  Robert is a big and extremely knowledgeable baseball fan who also has enjoyed his share of barbecue so you know he was a great guest.

Our only regret is we did not release this episode in podcast format sooner as a small portion of the baseball related topics are from prior to the pandemic shortened season.

Episode 77 is a huge bonus.

Bryan Gryka and Bob Wechsler are two incredibly entertaining guests, and we did not want to wait any longer to release our wonderful interview, so we are releasing a bonus episode.

Episode 76 will make you very happy.

Tim Reazor may be one of the few people who can make a discussion on cutting boards interesting as well as entertaining.  As co-founder of Fifth and Cherry, makers of beautiful premium handcrafted wooden cutting boards, he has a fascinating story to tell. Tim served 10 years in the military and was deployed three times in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and we are extremely grateful for his service.  He has a keen business sense and believes in building a brand based on outstanding products and customer service.  We are so fortunate to have found him and the special company he runs with his wife, Tanya.  Please enjoy our conversation and then go to https://fifthandcherry.com to shop for their cutting boards which are truly works of art and will make wonderful holiday gifts.

Jim Overmyer is the author of Cum Posey of the Homestead Grays:  A Biography of the Negro Leagues Owner and Hall of Famer.  Jim is a baseball history author specializing in the Negro Leagues. Baseball and BBQ Episode #73: Ralph Carhart, Author of The Hall Ball and Chad Ward of Traeger and Whiskey Bent BBQ

Baseball and BBQ Episode #73: Ralph Carhart, Author of The Hall Ball and Chad Ward of Traeger and Whiskey Bent BBQ

Our Halloween episode is filled with a few tricks and plenty of treats.

Ralph Carhart is the author of The Hall Ball: One Fan's Journey to Unite Cooperstown Immortals with a Single Baseball. Is there a guest better suited for a Halloween episode then someone whose book includes photos of the gravestones of Major League Baseball Hall of Fame members? Ralph tells stories of his many adventures working to have a baseball he found in Cooperstown, New York photographed with all the living Hall of Fame members and then photographed at the graves of the deceased Hall of Fame members, as well as some other places for those whose final resting places are a bit more difficult to explain. Enjoy the stories and then treat yourself by purchasing the book.

Chad Ward wears so many hats, wearing each one so well, that it is difficult to try and summarize who he is in one small paragraph.  As director of marketing for Traeger Pellet Grills, he helps to promote a product which has created a whole new way of cooking barbecue.  As the pitmaster and owner of the Whiskey Bent BBQ competition team he has won numerous competitions and made numerous television appearances and is a regular guest on the Dan Patrick Show.  As a guest on our show he is a true entertainer who kept us fascinated with his many stories which included visits with baseball Hall of Fame players, George Brett and Ken Griffey Jr.  Enjoy part one of the interview.

The episode also features talk about Cal Hubbard, a Baseball Hall of Fame member born on Halloween and who is a member of two professional sports Hall of Fame's.

We once again conclude the show with the beautiful song, "Baseball Always Brings You Home" from Dave Dresser and Shel Krakofsky.

Baseball and BBQ Episode #72: Shoeless Joe Jackson historian, Mike Nola and KCBS CEO, Emily Detwiler

Baseball and BBQ Episode #72: Shoeless Joe Jackson historian, Mike Nola and KCBS CEO, Emily Detwiler

    Fascinating conversations with wonderful guests.

Mike Nola is the official historian of the Shoeless Joe Jackson's Virtual Hall of Fame, http://www.blackbetsy.com/shoeless.html and we had the pleasure of learning a great amount on one of the biggest known names in baseball history. We were joined by our friend Gary Mack from Mets Musings and The Baseball Talk Radio Show as we all got the chance to learn the truth about one of the game's legendary characters where facts and myths are often confused. Mike tells it like it is or rather like it was and he is a great source for information on Jackson's fascinating history which even included owning a barbecue restaurant.

Emily Detwiler is the CEO of the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) https://www.kcbs.us/ and as she was happy to point out, is a proud baseball mom coming from a family extremely involved in the game as her son, husband, and brother-in-law are all involved in baseball. Her  love of baseball and barbecue makes her a very special guest as we discussed both topics.  Enjoy learning about a great society dedicated to barbecue and the person leading it through this extremely difficult time.

We once again conclude the show with the beautiful song, "Baseball Always Brings You Home" from Dave Dresser and Shel Krakofsky.

Don't forget to go to http://www.baseballbbq.com for grill tools and clothing for barbecue and baseball fans.

Baseball and BBQ Episode #67 - Jon Pessah, Author of Yogi: A Life Behind the Mask & Jeff "Ricer" Rice of Dead Broke BBQ

Baseball and BBQ Episode #67 - Jon Pessah, Author of Yogi: A Life Behind the Mask & Jeff "Ricer" Rice of Dead Broke BBQ

Episode 67 will hopefully satisfy that insatiable hunger for baseball and barbecue which we try to so hard to feed.

Jon Pessah took on a huge task by writing a book on one of baseball's most beloved icon's, whose reputation and life's work are part of historical lore.  It is a project which could overwhelm some authors, but not Jon Pessah.  In Yogi:  A Life Behind the Mask, we are witness to the story of Yogi Berra, from his humble beginnings through his 10 World Series Championships and the remainder of his life, where he becomes as large as—or maybe even larger—than the game itself.  Pessah shows the real Yogi, warts and all, but more importantly, we get to see one of our favorite characters of the game for whom he really was.  His interview will make you want to buy the book, and Yogi:  A Life Behind the Mask is one you will definitely be glad to add to your collection.

Jeff Rice known to all as Ricer, is one of the special people we are extremely fortunate to meet in the world of barbecue. Look up his channel, Dead Broke BBQ on YouTube and you will discover incredible videos as well as a Sunday night live show, BBQ Tavern Talk where he interviews some of the most intriguing people from the barbecue community. His cooking knowledge and radiant personality are not only on display on his YouTube channel, but also on the BBQ Central Show where he is one of the monthly featured embedded correspondents. Enjoy part one of this interview and then explore his YouTube channel, Dead Broke BBQ.

We once again conclude the show with the wonderful song, "Baseball Always Brings You Home" from Dave Dresser and Shel Krakofsky.

Baseball and BBQ Episode #56 - grand slam as we welcome not one, not two, but three exciting guests. Greg Rempe, Gary Looney and Jacob Kornhauser

Baseball and BBQ Episode #56 - grand slam as we welcome not one, not two, but three exciting guests. Greg Rempe, Gary Looney and Jacob Kornhauser

Episode 56 is a grand slam as we welcome not one, not two, but three exciting guests.

Gary Looney, whom Jeff met on his recent trip to Arizona, kicks things off. Gary works at the Los Angeles Angels spring training camp complex and Jeff definitely lucked out meeting him. Gary discusses the ins and outs of training camp and his thoughts on the Angels upcoming season.  Please note this was recorded a few weeks prior to baseball being delayed due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, but baseball fans will enjoy this immensely as we long for the season to begin.

If you are a fan of live fire cooking or even cooking in general, you must get to know our next guest, Greg Rempe.  His long and illustrious tenure as innovator and outstanding host of The BBQ Central Show is unmatched and it is what every barbecue podcast should aspire to.  His show can be heard live every Tuesday night from 9:00 pm to 11:00 pm and is released in podcast format; the first hour on Wednesday and the second hour on Thursday.  Then on Fridays you can catch up on parts of past episodes listening to The Best Moments of The BBQ Central Show in 10 Minutes or Less.  Go to http://thebbqcentralshow.com/ to find out more.

Rounding out our star studded lineup is author, Jacob Kornhauser.  His book, The Cup of Coffee Club: 11 Players and Their Brush with Baseball History is full of wonderful stories and interesting facts.  You will definitely want to read it more than once.  The tales of players and what they go through to become big league ball players is fascinating and then when you realize they only play in one Major League game, it is truly incredible.  The book is available on Amazon.com and is one we highly recommend.

We once again end the show with the wonderful baseball song, “Baseball Always Brings You Home”
from Dave Dresser and Shel Krakofsky.
