    What is ABA?

    What is ABA?

ABA is an evidence-based, effective approach for teaching skills, especially for individuals with autism. Here, we’re diving in deeper and discussing what ABA is. There’s a lot of information out there about ABA, some of it true and some of it not. ABA stands for Applied Behavior Analysis and it’s really just breaking skills down into smaller components. Then, a type of reinforcement is used to master each step and move on to the next until you reach your end goal. We also often begin with an assessment to determine where students are and where to begin with teaching.

Some parents can be apprehensive towards the approach and strategies, and at times, there are misconceptions around them. The more we understand ABA as practitioners, the better we can explain it to those we work with. We discuss how ABA uses data to make positive changes in behavior. We also talk about how ABA is tailored for each individual learner, why ABA isn’t only for children or those with autism, and more.

    What’s Inside:

    • The definition of ABA and a deeper dive into what it is.
    • How ABA leverages data.
    • Common misconceptions about ABA.

Episode 149 - EMPATHY IN EP: Understand Trauma to Navigate It Effectively with Miranda Coppoolse (Part 2)

Episode 149 - EMPATHY IN EP: Understand Trauma to Navigate It Effectively with Miranda Coppoolse (Part 2)

This episode of the Fearless Mindset Podcast is the second part of our conversation with Miranda Coppoolse, Behavior Analyst and Security Risk Advisor at MC Global Security Consulting. Talking to kids with trauma is more like an interrogation of how things operate today.

Miranda shares how she created a forensic program that helps organizations interview kids in a non-threatening and emphatic way, as interrogating usually does more harm than good. She also gives her insight on discarding ego and how loyalty and hard work can make women thrive in the EP industry.

    GOLDEN NUGGETS

A step-by-step program that treats trauma victims with empathy - Miranda: "When kids are being interviewed, it's not really interviewing, it's more on an interrogation. And for young people or even people with trauma, that is very threatening, so you don't really dare to say anything anymore. So it requires really a certain technique and empathy almost to do that."

"Because I can give you, for instance, the sheet on how to do it or the questions, but some people just don't have that. They cannot make a connection with a kid or a bond so, I created a step-by-step program in where I help organizations who are in that field to interview those victims."

Loyalty and hard work are the keys to success for women in EP - Miranda: "Just go after what you want. It's oftentimes hard because it's not an easy industry. So that's what you have to realize, it's a lot of training and you have to continue getting trained, get as much experience as you can. Believe in yourself. Just keep going.

If it's really what you want, and especially in executive protection for ladies, there are not that many. So once you're good enough, I mean trained enough and ready for it, there's a lot of work out there. But yeah, just be honest and be loyal and just work hard."

Episode 142 - MAXIMUM SECURITY: Combating Human Trafficking with Miranda Coppoolse (Part 1)

This episode of the Fearless Mindset Podcast is the first part of our conversation with Miranda Coppoolse, Behavior Analyst and Security Risk Advisor at MC Global Security Consulting. In a perfect world, people simply won't need protection. Unfortunately, human trafficking is something to watch out for regardless if you're rich or poor.

Miranda talks about how she works with different organizations to arm their members with knowledge in preventing and protecting against human trafficking. She also shares her experience in behavioral analysis and how she uses this to combat the problem much more effectively.

    GOLDEN NUGGETS

Working with nonprofit organizations for training against human trafficking - Miranda: "The training is really aimed to understand what is human trafficking, how you recognize it, and what can you do. Because if you don't know what you're looking for, you will never see it."

Never be too complacent - Miranda: "It's not so much that if you are wealthy or rich or come from a good home that nothing can happen to you or your children. Because, of course, they groom them over the internet or social media."

Episode 02: ABA Outside the Box: Interview with Dr. Todd Ward

I had the great opportunity to talk to Todd Ward, Ph.D., former BCBA-D, to discuss his recent decision to let his BCBA expire and what that means for the future direction of his career. Todd received his doctoral degree in behavior analysis from the University of Nevada, Reno and was the president and found of bSci21 Media, LLC, running one of the most successful blogs for behavior analysts, bSci21.org. Dr. Ward has also served on editorial boards and has worked in a wide variety of settings in ABA from centers, residential programs, homes, schools, and was the Director of the Behavior Analysis Online program for the University of North Texas.

    Objectives:

    • Identify ways that ABA can be utilized outside the field of autism
    • Understand the differences between the science of behaviorism in general and utilizing ABA in therapy
    • Discuss how education paths towards becoming a BCBA may play a role in the breadth of our scope of practice.

In behavior analysis, we love our acronyms! Today, we’re talking about what the ABC’s of behavior are. We’ll share how you can take ABC data, why it’s so important, and so much more. All too often, we’re faced with compiling ABC data from a large amount of information, which can be overwhelming. Data is ultimately supposed to make our lives easier and help us do a better job as practitioners.

ABC stands for antecedent, behavior, and consequence and when we refer to behavior, that includes the surrounding environment and what’s happening as well. There’s always something that happens to trigger a certain behavior as well as something that happens afterward, and ABC strives to capture the complete picture. We really want to know specifics around these points, and it helps to keep things super simple. Here, we share helpful tips so you can collect the best data possible as well as how to work alongside teachers and other practitioners.

Strategies for Making Token Boards More Effective in Your Classroom

Strategies for Making Token Boards More Effective in Your Classroom

Token boards are very popular in classrooms, however, a lot of times they are not as effective as they could be. In this episode you will learn 4 key strategies to make token boards in your classroom more effective. I walk you through each of these strategies so you can start using them tomorrow in your classroom.

In this episode you will learn:

Strategy 1: Take data on the behavior you want to increase in your classroom. Once you have data on that behavior you will be able to set an appropriate threshold for the amount of tokens the student has to earn before they can exchange them for the back up reinforcer. This is going to be key. If the student has to earn too many tokens before they get the backup reinforcer, your token board will likely not be as effective as it could be.

Strategy 2: You may need to condition the token as a reinforcer. What this means is you might need to pair the token directly with the behavior and the backup reinforcer when you are first starting with your token board. This sounds more complicated than it is, tune into this episode so you learn exactly how to do this in a couple of very easy steps.

Strategy 3: Have a menu of backup reinforcers. Raise your hand if you have ever said..."the student doesn't want to earn (insert item) anymore, the token board isn't working." Sounds familiar right? Creating a large menu of reinforcers can solve this problem in an instant. In this episode I provide you with some information of why this might be occurring and how to fix it.

Strategy 4: Have a plan for fading out the token board. Our goal for all of our students is that we teach them skills they need to contact naturally occurring reinforcers in the environment. This is something you have to explicitly plan for and have in the back of your head when you are first starting to use a token board with a student.

In this episode I walk you through all of these strategies so you can make token boards more effective in your classroom. Listen today!

Day in the Life of a Behavior Specialist in a School

Day in the Life of a Behavior Specialist in a School

Ever wonder what a behavior specialist in a school does all day?

In this episode I walk you through the different types of roles behavior specialists in schools can have and what their day to day jobs look like.

There are three different models of what your job could look like as a behavior specialist in schools (usually). I walk you through each of these different models and talk about some of the day to day tasks they might do.

Day in the Life of a Behavior Specialist in a School

I also talk about my main role and why I choose the model I choose as a career choice. See when I graduated, I had many different career paths I could have taken. I could have provided ABA services privately to families in the home setting. I could have pursued becoming a school psychologist (yes, I do have my school psychology license). Or I could have been a behavior specialist in a school.

I knew that this is what I wanted to do, and I knew what type of job I wanted. In this episode tell you what my job looks like and how to approach applying fo behavior specialist jobs.

The one, of many, things I love about my job is that each day is different. Each day I do new tasks related to being a behavior specialist in schools. I absolutely love that. I love having a wide range of responsibilities that allow me to reach so many teachers and students.

If you are thinking about becoming a behavior specialist in a school or you are a teacher looking for a career change, this episode is for you. Listen now and let me know what you think!
