    The Terminator 1984

    The Terminator 1984

Join us on the flat circle, for the first in a seemingly endless loop of Terminator films. One and done. We're giving you the best of the lot. Best of the decade. Best of the genre.

This is (unarguably) James Cameron's best film, thanks in large part to his brilliant (re)casting of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Linda Hamilton, Michael Biehn, Earl Been, Lance Henriksen, Bill Paxton and Paul Winfield round out this inspired cast. Never forget Dick Miller, no matter how small his part may be.

Aaron is joined by Jordan Fish and Ray Tintori of the preeminent Coen Bros. podcast, To The White Sea, to discuss the chilly, snow-capped neo-noir 'A Simple Plan', directed with uncharacteristic restraint by master stylist and Coen Brothers collaborator Sam Raimi.

We discuss the career of Sam Raimi and the techniques he employs here to generate the unsettling, stern tone of the film. Then, we talk about the long gestation period of the project, and its many iterations attached to various directors (including Mike Nichols, John Dahl, and Ben Stiller!). Finally, we unpack the similarities and differences between Raimi's vision of the snowbound, Midwestern morality tale and that of his pals Joel & Ethan Coen in their 1996 landmark 'Fargo'.

Julian Sands (Warlock, Boxing Helena, Warlock: The Armageddon)

Julian Sands (Warlock, Boxing Helena, Warlock: The Armageddon)

We've always loved Julian Sands, and were saddened to hear of his disappearance and the revelation of his passing in 2023. To celebrate his life and career, we discuss a personal favorite, along with a pair of campier entries that, if nothing else, are fun to laugh about.

What happens when a warlock escapes the clutches of death, travels through a portal three centuries into the future, to locate three parts of The Grand Grimoire to undo creation? Well, you'd better believe that a determined witch-hunter follows to try to stop him! Julian Sands is Warlock (1989)!

Not into warlocks and all that stuff? Well, how about Julian Sands as an infuriatingly meek surgeon who opportunistically uses a hit-and-run accident to imprison, and physically alter,  the woman of his dreams? Probably not a particularly healthy thing to do. It's a story of obsession and possession, with some questionable acting. But hey, if Boxing Helena (1993) is a match for your fetish, you do you.

And then from there, if you thought that the acting in Boxing Helena was bad, get ready for some of the most remarkably poor acting you have ever seen from a complete cast. Thankfully, Julian Sands returns as the warlock, the one marginal bright spot. Though it probably would have helped if these actors had some decent dialogue to work with. However, as it stands, Warlock: The Armageddon (1993) is probably best used as a device to torture your enemies.

Episode 300 Mortuary (w/ Stephen Sajdak)

It's October!! It's our 300th episode!! It's Bill Paxton skipping in a cemetery? It's ALL those things and more as we celebrate the horror flicks of 1983 and our tricentennial with one of the gang from We Hate Movies and returning champion Stephen Sajdak!! First, we've unearthed a slasher gem from the grave: MORTUARY!! This film has everything: Shag-adelic Frankensteins, Billy Beer, sunken living rooms, Chekov's Phone Co., the Boogie Van code, improvised grab-ass, multiple tummy stabbings, slasher disco tracks, Greg's Dad, aka The Main Character of the movie, and a beachside Sheriff's office we'd all like to work at!! All this, an in-depth analysis of every nightgown worn in the film, and stomach-centric Choose Your Won Deathventure are all waiting for you!! Share this episode with someone you love. Even someone you'd love to embalm alive - we won't judge.

'Tombstone' [1993] - Wackoe, CE Garcia & Gabe "The Calilobo."

On this episode we delve into "Tombstone," the epic story of Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, the showdown at the OK Corral, and the tumultuous tale of a production almost as legendary as the film it inspired; written by Kevin Jarre, directed by George P. Cosmatos, and "ghost-directed" by Kurt Russell.

    Aliens (1986): "Billsy TwosWeeks"

    Aliens (1986): "Billsy TwosWeeks"

Which came first, the alien or the egg? Alien (1979) may have raised that question, but Aliens (1986) takes the investigation a step further as they tack on an S and get into the plurals. And boy are we getting into the plurals. This August, we’re all aliens all the time here at Spooky Tuesday, and when we came up with the idea for Alien Month, we knew we’d have to blast off with a bang. That’s why we’re heading back to deep space with the long-awaited Sigourney Weaver sequel as we pick up just about where we left off (give or take 57 years).

    Episode 44: A Simple Plan

    Episode 44: A Simple Plan

This week on Remainders, we talk the 1999 crime thriller A Simple Plan. Directed by Sam Raimi, mostly without his signature chaotic style, Bill Paxton and Billy Bob Thornton play brothers who discover a duffel bag of money and decide to keep it. Almost immediately, this apparent blessing turns into a curse as greed, violence, past trauma, and death all arise as a result. Paxton and Thornton reunite after One False Move and once again prove they are both timeless character actors.

Other topics include the screenwriters and actors strike, Margot Robbie, the Boogie Nights soundtrack, new music picks, ranking the Mission: Impossible movies, and Tom Cruise as the last movie star.

    Episode 43: One False Move

    Episode 43: One False Move

This week on Remainders we watch the 1992 crime film One False Move. From director Carl Franklin and co-written by Billy Bob Thorton, Bill Paxton and Thorton lead this forgotten gem about three criminals clashing with a small-town sheriff. Paxton, the all-time great everyman, is at his best as naïve Chief Dale “Hurricane” Dixon, who is excited at the opportunity to become a real cop. But when his past comes to light, his will is put to the test. A Coen-esque thriller with the perfect Paxton performance that shouldn’t be missed.

Other topics include Bill Paxton’s filmography, the summer sale at Darrenvorel.com, Jurassic Park at 30, the merits of VHS nostalgia, The Cure’s new tour and upcoming album, Treat Williams and Cormac McCarthy, and a rally for the return of film commentaries.

    Twister feat. Jackson Boren

    Twister feat. Jackson Boren

Cenephile and severe weather head Jackson Boren joins us to discuss 'Twister', one of the biggest hits of 1996. It's a film that takes several well-worn, sometimes quaint, and seemingly disparate cinematic tropes and combines them into a transcendent and irreplicable experience.

We discuss the rise and fall of filmmaker Jan de Bont, from his time as one of Paul Verhoeven and John McTiernan's key collaborators, to his work on back-to-back 90s action hits (this film and 1994's 'Speed'), to his gun-for-hire status for the 2003 'Tomb Raider' sequel that stands as his last film as director to date. Then, we talk about the film's host of influences, most notably its screwball comedy premise wrapped in a disaster movie's skin. Finally, we discuss the movie's groundbreaking special effects and champion the film as a state-of-the-art blockbuster spectacle.

Those loveable chest burstin' Xenomorphs are back and so is the Running Scared Podcast with back-to-back episodes on the Alien franchise. This time around, we dive into the blockbuster masterpiece that is James Cameron's Aliens. A special effects tour de force, Aliens cranks up the bad ass meter on Sigourney Weaver's Ripley while echoing the original film with a few nice twists. Is Ripley's dream sequence imagined or is it somehow real? Where did Newt poop? Vasquez is a fashion icon.  Hudson is the most easily wound up  depression leader.
