Whether through television, books, games, films or music, escapism serves as a crucial element of the human experience.

This week, Dr Susan Carland and her expert guests explore different forms of escapism, from pseudo-nostalgia, to live action role-playing and video games, to reality TV.

Author Michael W Clune makes a vital distinction between healthy escapism and addiction.

Monash University Business School Associate Professor Davide Orazi explains the appeal of pseudo-nostalgia and live action role-playing.

Cultural critic Dr Clem Bastow discusses the ways we can use escapism to learn about ourselves.

Monash Arts lecturer Dr Whitney Monaghan argues that we bring our full selves into our interactions with media. Are we really escaping anything after all?

“What Happens Next?” returns with a new topic: escapism. From pseudo-nostalgia that transports us to imagined pasts, to the allure of live action role-play and video games, host Dr Susan Carland and her expert guests shed light on the power of escapism, the blurring of fiction and reality, and the fine line between healthy indulgence and potential addiction.

Escapism often involves seeking refuge in an alternative reality, be it through binge-watching TV shows, playing video games, or even live-action role-playing (LARPing).

But is it unhealthy to long for a place – or even a time – that you’ve never experienced? And what about the parasocial relationships we often create with fictional characters from our favourite media?

This week’s guest experts include Monash University Business School’s Associate Professor Davide Orazi, cultural critic Dr Clem Bastow, Monash’s School of Media, Film and Journalism lecturer Dr Whitney Monaghan and author Professor Michael W Clune.

Today’s episode raises questions about the balance between healthy escapism and excessive immersion, as well as the impact of escapism on individuals' ability to return to reality. Can the line become too blurred?

Ep 647 Unplugging from the Screen: My Journey Without TV (Pt 1)

Ep 647 Unplugging from the Screen: My Journey Without TV (Pt 1)

In this episode, I dive deep into my relationship with television, tracing back to my college days without a TV, to falling in love while watching 'The X Files', and the eventual reintroduction of TVs into my life. As streaming platforms took over, I found myself lost in the vast sea of content, often spending more time searching than watching. My binge-watching sessions, especially with 'Game of Thrones', made me question my choices. This led to the pivotal moment on August 18, 2023, when I decided to take the TV off my wall. Listen in as I discuss the fears, challenges, and the newfound freedom that came with this decision.

    Encapsulated Show Notes:

    • The early days without a TV during college.
    • Falling in love with 'The X Files' and the reintroduction of TV.
    • The era of binge-watching and the pain of repetitive content.
    • The turning point: Watching 'Game of Thrones' for the third time.
    • The decision to take down the TV and cancel streaming subscriptions.
    • Reflecting on the impact of TV on relationships and personal growth.
    • Teaser for upcoming episodes: Exploring fears and the relationship with my 20-year-old son.

    Ep 046 - Tips on Managing Binge-Watching

Most of us have probably stayed up far beyond our regular bedtime at some point to watch one more episode of that new show.  Everyone's been talking about that new show and you finally checked it out. Before you know it, you are watching one episode after the other, and it seems you can barely manage to turn it off.

Based on several studies I provide in this episode, binge-watching seems to be highly common and popular thanks to streaming services and never-ending content that's readily available online. Whether it's binge-watching, scrolling on your phone for hours at night, gaming or watching one video after the next one, you might hit a point where you are starting to feel some physical or mental effects.

Check out this episode for tips on how to manage binge-watching, so watching your favorite shows stays an enjoyable experience and will not leave you drained, exhausted, and sleep-deprived.

As usual, I'm ending this podcast episode with a bedtime story. If you want to jump ahead, the story starts at around the 35 minute mark.

Back In The Day: Warlock '89

Back In The Day: Warlock '89

Tonight’s movie is a hidden gem among horror movie rentals! WARLOCK 1989.

We make some jokes about an accident during last week’s live stream before discussing this week’s Home Video Headlines:

    • Godzilla Versus King, our issues with Godzilla being the villain again
    • A non-spoiler mini-review of PG: Psycho Goreman
    • Alien Nation reboot potentially becoming a Disney Plus mini-series
    •  Whether or not we think you should be able to buy and sell video on demand codes

Tonight’s movie is a hidden gem among horror movie rentals. I think people know of it, but are still questioning whether or not to watch it.  This movie has a great director, great actors, and a great premise.

In 17th-century New England, witch hunter Giles Redferne (Richard E. Grant) captures an evil warlock (Julian Sands), but the conjurer eludes death with supernatural help. Flung into the future, the warlock winds up in the 1980s and plans to bring about the end of the world. Redferne follows the enchanter into the modern era and continues his mission, but runs into trouble in such unfamiliar surroundings. With the help of a young woman (Lori Singer), can Redferne finally defeat the warlock?

Directed by Steve Miner. He did Friday the 13th Part 2, Part 3, House, Forever Young, My Father The Hero, Halloween H20,  and Lake Placid. He looked at the script and recognized the main characters being the warlock and the witch hunter were fresh off the boat from England in colonial America, so he had the good sense to get some amazing British actors.

Julian Sands sat on the script for a while assuming it was run of the mill slasher material, and then he understood there was a dark sense of humor running through the tone of the story.

Richard Grant supposedly comes in for the Warlock part and then gets the chance to play the hero named Giles Redferne.

Highlights from our first impressions include:

    • “Julian Sands steals the show.”
    • “Not as good as I remember.”
    • “This movie is alive. Big kick out of it.”
    • “Scary, if you believe in good and evil.”

    Feeling Good With Ed Wood

    Feeling Good With Ed Wood

“If Ed Wood is the worst filmmaker in history, how come his movies make you feel so good?”

Brought you by KEEPS go to Keeps.com/bingewatchers

Tonight on Binge-Watchers Podcast, it’s FEELING GOOD WITH ED WOOD! - watch the video stream here -

Tonight’s movie? Ed Wood (1994) Because of his eccentric habits and bafflingly strange films, director Ed Wood (Johnny Depp) is a Hollywood outcast. Nevertheless, with the help of the formerly famous Bela Lugosi and a devoted cast and crew of show-business misfits who believe in Ed's off-kilter vision, the filmmaker is able to bring his oversize dreams to cinematic life. Despite a lack of critical or commercial success, Ed and his friends manage to create an oddly endearing series of extremely low-budget films.

A little about filmmaker, Ed Wood. Edward Davis Wood Jr. was an American filmmaker, actor, and author. In the 1950s, Wood directed several low-budget science fiction, crime and horror films, notably Glen or Glenda, Jail Bait, Bride of the Monster, Plan 9 from Outer Space, Night of the Ghouls and The Sinister Urge.

Should we spend a minute talking about the magic partnership between Johnny Depp and Tim Burton? Alright.

We will run down some home video headlines such as Wonder Woman 1984 goes to HBO Max, Scorpion King gets a Rock reboot, Alan Rickman’s movie diaries are being printed, Coming 2 America will be out in March, Deadpool 3 is being written by Bob’s Burger writers - The Molyneux Sisters, Stranger Things 4 casts Robert Englund, 10 Cloverfield Lane director is making the next Predator movie, Burbank gets a Batman, and some sad news about Michael J. Fox.

Turkey Day movies? Our favorites include Scent Of A Woman, Back To The Future 3, Elf, Home Alone, Jingle All The Way, and Rocky IV!

What else did we watch this week? Deerskin, In The Mouth Of Madness, Split Second, The Queen’s Gambit, and Sightseers.

Plus first impressions, favorite bits from tonight’s movie, and we will rate this month’s run of feel good movies on our binge now, binge later, and binge never rating scales.  We might even mention some alternative feel good movie choices like Wayne’s World 2 of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

Feeling Good With The Missing Link

Feeling Good With The Missing Link

Feel good roundtable rewatch of Encino Man submitted by Nicky Lates for our feel good movie month here at Binge-Watchers Podcast.

What is tonight's movie about? California teen Dave Morgan (Sean Astin) is digging a pit for a pool in his backyard when he happens upon a caveman frozen in a block of ice. Aided by his goofy friend Stoney (Pauly Shore), Dave transports their discovery to his garage, where the Neanderthal thaws and is revived. When Dave and Stoney find the living and thoroughly bewildered caveman, they attempt to pass him off as a foreign exchange student named Link (Brendan Fraser), resulting in many misadventures.

Love this cast! Sean Astin! Pauly Shore! Brendan Fraser! Megan Ward! Robin Tunney! Richard Masur! Michael DeLouise! Rose McGowan! Rick Ducommun! Erick Avari! Gerry Bednob!

We will run down some home video headlines such as Constantine 2 is official, James Gunn has officially confirmed Sylvester Stallone's casting in The Suicide Squad. Stallone's role in the upcoming movie is currently undisclosed...

    Feeling Good With Gung Ho

    Feeling Good With Gung Ho

WE ARE GOING TO START TALKING ABOUT FEEL GOOD MOVIES SO FOR THE AUDIENCE WATCHING ALONG AT HOME, A feel-good film is a film which presents people and life in a way which makes the people who watch it feel happy and optimistic.

Before we talk about Gung Ho let’s go to Home Video Headlines and see what we have heard about movies and TV...

Great actor and man’s man, Sir Sean Connery passed, so we mention our favorite movies of his remarkable and extensive filmography such as League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Dragon Heart, Highlander, Untouchables, Hunt For Red October, and many more.

Tonight’s movie is Gung Ho.  An unemployed auto factory foreman played by Michael Keaton goes to Japan to cut a deal with a company to reopen his auto plant back home and save his hometown.  There is a culture class and debate about work ethics, but ultimately, seeing it from both sides, the two groups come together for a common goal.

The supporting cast is very good including George Wendt, Gedde Watanabe, Rick Overton, John Torturro, Rodney Kageyama, and Mimi Rogers.

Our first impression of this movie is the ending is rewarding and exciting, well-earned and this movie tells a great story with a great cast, and it will make anyone who watches it feel good.

Tonight we are brought to you by Mack Weldon. Visit mackweldon.com/bingewatchers and enter promo code: BINGEWATCHERS. Mack Weldon offers a one-stop shop for men’s basics. Socks, shirts, hoodies, underwear, polos and active shorts, whatever you need, and our code gets you 20% off your order.

Our favorite bits from this movie include the river ritual, the baseball sequence, the bar scene between the American and Japanese executives, and the satisfying conclusion.

An audience member named Nick sent us an email because he loves this movie called The Beast from 1988; we read his email during the episode to explore his love for this movie and get the word out from one movie fan to another.

    Summer Slash: Lord Of Illusions

On tonight's exciting adventure into Binge-Watching:

    • Midnight Meat Train is a better adaptation than Hellraiser---WHAT?
    • How does the magic work in this movie anyway?
    • Will Smith and Kevin Hart are remaking Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, but they could just make a road trip movie during Thanksgiving.

This week we review Clive Barker's magic noir film, Lord of Illusion, we talk our favorite bits whether they resemble Hellraiser or not, did someone say James Belushi was a horror movie fan, we discuss the top Clive Barker adaptations, and what to binge from this prolific fantasy-horror writer, and we talk about watching Money Heist, Red Sun, and revisting Addam's Family.

    Summer Slash: Baskin

    Summer Slash: Baskin

    What’s new? Let’s see...

Seth Rogen was brought in to write jokes a last ditch effort to save RDJ’s Doctor Dolittle, which did little to save that dumpster fire when it hit cinemas with dragon farts, some obscure British filmmaker named Alan Parker died and Dave has to tell us what films he did and what films he did that we should like such as Road To Wellville about that nut Dr. Kellogg who invented corn flakes and promoted circumcisions as a cure to having sexual desires, Jean-Claude Van Damme finally gets a Netflix deal with an action comedy called, “The Last Mercenary,” Back To The Future was supposed to be fueled by Coca-Cola according to Jon Cryer, Gail Weathers will appear in Scream 5, and the internet according to Rotten Tomatoes has compiled the Top 10 Christian Slater movies.

We talk about the audience reactions to our latest Movie of the Week video entry, which is all about great movie soundtracks, and so we briefly discuss this Judgement Night movie.

We get asked about our dream movie projects.  Nicky Lates has a good idea for a 1990s horror thriller with Gary Oldman, Dave has his Expendables Christmas movie going to the Hallmark Network for their 100 Days of Christmas, and Johnny Spoiler is so jaded he proclaims he is done wanting to make any movies at all, and recounts an ill-fated vampire movie that got optioned, circulated, rewritten, and almost made.

This week on #SUMMERSLASH2020 we reviewed Baskin, which translates as “Raid.”

It is the first feature film by a Turkish horror director named Can Evrenol (pronounced like John, a common first name in Turkey, as it turns out just like the name John)

He was influenced by filmmakers like David Lynch, George Romero, and John Carpenter.

He goes on to make horror films like Housewife and The Field Guild To Evil.

Baskin is about a police squad that goes to Hell, but as their nightmare plays out it seems like they have been in Hell or Purgatory the whole time on repeat.

We compare it to Hellraiser, Event Horizon, As Above So Below, and some other horror entries.

Baskin does not do well on the Binge Now, Binge Later, or Binge Never scales because it is not an easy movie to watch, and much is sadly lost in translation.  However, we are saying it is so disturbing and horrific, which it intended, that we could not recommend it to average viewers or even new horror movie fans.

A side discussion includes talking about how bitter John Carpenter seems in interviews lately.

This week we also watched Money Heist, Legend, The Counselor (Ridley Scott’s Showgirls), Umbrella Academy Season 2, and a horror movie documentary on Shudder called In Search Of Darkness.

    Summer Slash: Tenebrae

    Summer Slash: Tenebrae

We've "hacked" our way through the charts on our Summer Slash Marathon...

This week we watched Tenebrae from the "Master of Horror," "Master of Thrills" Dario Argento.  He is most well known for Suspiria, Inferno, and Mother of Tears, or for writing Demons and Demons 2.  He is also created as one of the fathers of the giallo subgenre, which for lack of a better definition is a visually stunning slasher movie with artistic prowess.

Recorded on Father's Day, so we put together a dad's movie playlist that included Three Men And A Baby, Father Hood, Raising Arizona, Over The Top, and get this, Father's Day.

We debate whether or not Kim Khardashian's new Spotify show needs our support, and Johnny gives his general opinion that we do not do sell out endorsements, but this debate mostly rages between Atom and Johnny; Dangerous Dave and Nicky Lates stayed neutral.  Johnny is disgruntled about corporate parents scenarios.

Atom follows up on the Cinestate/Fangoria scandal with some updates from the original story as reported.

We discuss whether or not The Binge-Watchers Podcast Crew could handle Fangoria and jokes erupt about how quickly we would get fired by igniting another potential lawsuit involving video stores and Victoria's Secret.

Horror franchise grudge matches are imagined.

Trivia from the bloody affairs of the Tenebrae movie such as a heavily edited cut called Unsane, being banned from the United Kingdom as a "video nasty", reviews, and favorite death scenes as well credit to one of the first transgender superstars, Eva Robins.

    Summer Slash: Der Samurai

    Summer Slash: Der Samurai

It's week 2 of Summer Slash 2020, but we have to stop and take a minute to discuss a movie tangent.  A Made For TV situation.  We have to discuss all the Knight Rider sequels and rebooting attempts. Like Knight Rider 2000, Knight Rider 2010, Knight Rider: 2008, and Team Knight Rider.  Yes, Knight Rider: 2008 comes after Knight Rider 2010, that's not a typo.

There’s a German Slasher film out there with a 100% Rotten Tomato  rating, it was the debut feature of a filmmaker named Till Kleinert that he crowdfunded and he also used non-actors as the lead and the killer - Michel Diercks and Pit Bukowski did I mention it has a 100% rating on the tomato meter.

A katana wielding maniac in a dress emerges from the woods and attacks a small village with 2 police officers, the hero of our story being the new kid with a badge.

I know police officers are not people’s favorite heroes right now, but this dude is just some innocent kid himself who seems to have taken the only job in this one job town he could get.  He spends most of his time feeding wild animals and he doesn’t even carry a gun.

This dude literally tries to reason the killer out of his killing spree with kind words and suggestions.

One Word First impressions of the Der Samurai? Disturbing.

Der Samurai Review (You Have To Listen to Hear The Whole Delicious and Delirious Details):

Crudest definition Der Samurai is a slasher film.

A slasher film is a sub-genre of horror films involving a killer murdering a group of people, usually by the use of bladed tools.

Let’s get back to our fluffy little hero in this movie and discuss the movie’s elements.

Like the killer mailing the murder weapon to the hero and then the hero delivering it to the killer on accident…The sword. The Penis. The Woods. The Wolf.

Highway To Hell? Since the hero was a cop. Let’s talk about a cop that polices Hell. In Highway To Hell.

    Next week: Blood Diner.

4月はアニメ / April is For Anime: Robots And Remakes

4月はアニメ / April is For Anime: Robots And Remakes

One of us cracks the code, so you can make that tasty KFC chicken recipe at home.  A debate rages about whether or not it is safe to order food during the Lockdown Era, we discuss the Great American Frozen Pizza Famine, Mike's Ultimate Pizza is referenced, Dave Portnoy with One Bite Pizza Reviews comes up, and of course, pizza is the perfect food.

How some pizza is saving lives because it is still Hot-N-Ready, we are surprised by how quickly all the corporations rushed their heroic commercials to market, and we joke that you cannot even trust the people you live with.

Then we discuss an Instagram follower named Jeff The Killer, who may or may not be a serial killer in the making, which brings up the Wrinkles The Clown documentary on Hulu.

Hentai comes up again.  Where do you draw the line between porn and animated feature films?

We heard The Tiger King couldn't watch The Tiger King show and then, we have to discuss what a prisoner has to do for wifi and frozen pizza.

We pay tribute to the trucker, marine, and actor --- Brian Dennehy, who died recently.
We replay some of his greatest hits.

We rip into remakes such as Valley Girl The Musical, express our feelings on the new Firestarter, we are dismayed by the delay in the new Alien Nation.  However, we are super excited about the Hellraiser remake on the way.

Johnny Spoiler "accidentally" spoils the plot of Cocoon out of sheer excitement.
We lay out the terms of when it is okay to spoil a movie plot.

We fantasize about scrapped Batman movies such as Clint Eastwood playing Bruce Wayne in the cancelled Batman Beyond live action movie.

Finally, we review this trippy and amazing anime anthology about robots called Robot Carnival.

Today we are Sponsored by MANSCAPED.
