Canvas Studio Boston Creator Daphne Walker

Canvas Studio Boston Creator Daphne Walker

The doors of Canvas Studio/The Design Lab opened one year ago this month.  I had the chance to sit down with the creator, Daphne Walker.

She doesn't necessarily consider herself to be an artist, but definitely has a creative side, which is clear but what she has and continues to create inside the studio.

Its not only a fun, amazing experience but she keeps in mind her community in the Hyde Park section of Boston, always listening to them and creating special events for all to feel welcome and represented.

The Canvas Studio was intentionally built to be an intimate space (fitting approximately 18 people at one sitting) where people could reconnect, especially coming off of the pandemic.

Clearly this unique space has gotten attention with viral social media videos and sold out events for months in advance! WIth this, Daphne is already making plans for expansion!

She invited me to do a co-podcast where we talk to eachother for both of our shows during the month of June to talk about topics around Pride.  Alexandra is super open, gay friendly and a wonderful ally to so many in the LGBTQ+ community.  Our conversation focuses on having open conversations, myths about how someone looks and how people are attracted to others and I even share my "coming out" story. Thank you Alexandra for always being a wonderful friend and a safe space for so many!

Can't Turn Back with Writer Alexandra Salmon

Can't Turn Back with Writer Alexandra Salmon

Like to many guests on this podcast, Alexandra found that "corporate America" was not for her. She had a passion for writing from childhood when her mom would read to her.

A bout with shingles at the young age of 29 lead Alexandra to realize the stress her corporate job was causing and found herself jumping into real estate as an independent contractor while continuing to write a novel that had been in her mind for years.

She shares her path to publishing her own book and then re-working the title/coverart to re-publish.  She's now working on her second novel and has really focused on the practice of sitting down at the same time each day to write at least 2000 words!

The Primal Scream with Photographer Alice Rouse

The Primal Scream with Photographer Alice Rouse
This talented woman wrote her story long before she even knew it would become a reality.  At the age of 16 she did a school project writing about where she saw herself in 10 years, traveling taking pictures of people and sure enough after positions in architecture and graphic design, she came back to do just that.

Alice shares her story of starting with taking pictures of kids around her Charlestown, MA neighborhood to working with moms, newly engaged couples, familes and more.

She recently worked on a project taking pictures of moms around Boston doing their "primal scream" as a release during the pandemic which gained national attention!

We also did a lifestyle shoot recently where she made me feel super at ease and comfortable!  We ended up with some really cool shots!

What Moves Her - Episode 86 with Artist Stephanie Stiassni

What Moves Her - Episode 86 with Artist Stephanie Stiassni

Boston Artist Stephanie Stiassni shares her story on this episode, of being a teacher of art. She enjoyed it but just didn't feel it really lit her up!

She made the decision to leave and follow her dream of creating art, starting with using watercolor to paint what was around her, homes, people and pets of Charlestown. And just like that, people started reaching out, wanting more!

She's also been asked to pair up with Monroe, Monroe Home & Style (monroeboston.com) a local store that now sells her paintings.
