259 - Leading with a Rainbow Lens: Enhancing Inclusive Leadership Practices with Dr Steve Yacovelli

This week we take a look through the iridescent, rainbow lens of leadership, with Dr Steve Yacovelli, aka ‘The Gay Leadership Dude™’, to ask the question: what does it mean to be a truly inclusive leader?

Well beyond the DEI acronym and its all too often tick-box allyship mentality, we explore the essence of inclusive leadership and what every impactful leader can learn from the six competencies that naturally show up in the LGBTQ+ community: being authentic, leading with courage, having empathy, effective communication, building relationships, and influencing organisational culture.

We talk all things pronouns, bringing your full self to work, managing your unconscious bias, and finally, we pull at the seams of diversity, to reveal a single beautiful truth: every single human on this planet is diverse!

    Find out about:

    • Learnings from Steve’s 25 years in the leadership, development, change management, and diversity and inclusion consulting space
    • What it means to lead with a Pride Leadership mindset
    • Why inclusive leadership must go beyond the superficial celebration of the DEI acronym to foster belonging for all
    • The five dimensions of diversity and what it means for leadership
    • Why a feedback-rich culture is critical to creating belonging in the workplace
    • Why learning in a group of 3 can have greater success than learning in pairs

    15. Discovering Your Brand's Soul: The Personality Puzzle

    15. Discovering Your Brand's Soul: The Personality Puzzle

In this episode, we explored the concept of brand personality and why it's crucial for connecting with your audience on a human level.

Imagine meeting someone for the first time; you subconsciously evaluate their character traits, their tone of voice, and what they talk about to determine if they're a threat or a valuable connection. The same principle applies to brands. Building a human brand is all about creating a feeling that resonates with your audience.

To achieve this, we discussed a five-step framework to define your brand's personality:

Know Your Target Audience: Understand who your customers are and what they desire. Your brand personality should align with their needs and motivations.

Identify Brand Archetypes: Brand archetypes help you pinpoint the dominant character traits of your target audience. This step helps you connect with your customers on a deeper level.

Determine Your Brand Role: Decide how you can serve your customers' needs and aspirations. Are you like them, guiding them, or simply moderating their experience?

Find Your Brand's Archetypal Mix: Define the dominant archetypes that should shape your brand's personality. This step ensures consistency in your messaging.

Bring Your Brand to Life: Take actions that align with your brand's personality consistently. Just as people express their personalities consistently, your brand should too.

Remember, your brand's personality is a key element in creating lasting connections and building trust with your customers. It's the foundation upon which you can authentically represent your business, allowing it to grow and evolve while maintaining its core identity.

By following these steps, you'll be well on your way to transforming your business into a magnetic brand that resonates deeply with your audience, fosters lasting relationships, and drives success. So, take this framework and start crafting a brand personality that your customers won't be able to resist!

    Quotes:

SCOTT: The importance of having a single platform for work and records

“We know they're not all gonna work the same, but to be able to have everything in a single place in our system of record. And that was the most important thing is that it could not only have the team work together or work separately, when appropriate, but also to gather the metrics for our leadership, that show that we can prove that we are. One of the things is very important for an in-house agency is proving your value.”

SCOTT: Importance of team bonding and cohesion

“Make sure people are happy and able to work efficiently and collaboratively. I'm sure being in-person at times would be great and when we can do it, when we can come into in-person collaborate, it does happen. We do try and get together when possible. But it's something that we've been very fortunate that we were already in a position where we were ready to work virtually.”

What Kevin sees in clients nowadays: “The client, these days, at least, what we hear a lot, is the client is starting to clamp down on budgets and creating tighter and tighter boxes into which that creative product has to fit.”

Ben on the scalability of the agency model: “When you have an agency model like this, and that relationship is good, and you're delivering quality and delivering on your promise, when people invest or companies invest in one type of marketing that generally naturally expands.”

How Ben picks the right talent: “I always try it what is what seems I would say, comes across as great talent or who could be, is usually someone with a diverse background, who has done multiple things at multiple different agencies.”

How important is brand consistency according to Ben: “Brand consistency is, I would say, more critical than ever, but what has to be considered and it's a big consideration and should be thought about all the time. How do you keep that fresh and adaptable for all those places that your brand has to be consistent in?”
