    QUOTES

11:14 Eliminate friction so the customer has access to the product - Andreu: "The decision is inventory belongs to the customer. We put the customer at the center and that means that we have to change the dynamics of the company, which for 150 years were built around building channels, wholesale, retail, travel, and e-commerce. And we kind of eliminated all these artificial barriers that the company built during many years."

17:39 Going from 36 distribution centers to 2 globally - Andreu: "We were dramatically reducing our inventory and our working capital while we were increasing sales. How did we achieve that? We were putting all the inventory that we had in the company, including vendors, goods in transit, the stores, including B2B2C partners. We were putting all of this inventory at the service of customers"

Fashion Stylist Hetty Appleton-Miles on getting into the industry, developing styling skills and her personal style

Fashion Stylist Hetty Appleton-Miles on getting into the industry, developing styling skills and her personal style

I chatted with Hetty Appleton-Miles Stylist at Burberry who moved to London from Australia 7 years ago.

Hetty’s main job as Stylist for the British brand is styling the looks for the Burberry website and some digital campaigns: from developing the concept with her director to styling up to overseeing the looks on set. Like any other person working in fashion, also her working days are never the same.

From this chat, you’ll hear how she got started in the industry and you’ll be surprised to learn that she started with no formal university education. Although in the podcast she says that educating yourself outside of a traditional degree is fundamental. indeed she took several online courses to understand more about fashion. I asked her about her tips for becoming a good stylist and if this is a career you want to pursue, you will be motivated to know that she believes that styling is a skill that you can practice through work experience and that you can acquire even if right now maybe you believe you might not have it. We also chatted about her recent work trip to Paris, her favorite shows of the season as well as how she separates her personal style from her styling work.

The ups and downs of creative business with Illustrator Lisa Stickley

Introducing the wondrous Lisa Stickley - a creative who's wonderfully authentic and true to herself. She’s an illustrator who delightfully describes herself as a professional colourer-inner.  She’s had so much business success - being stocked in household names like Harrods, Liberty, Paul Smith and Burberry, amongst others.  She’s so generous in sharing her experience of when it all went wrong and she walked away from her business and name.  She also talks about how she was affected by her dyslexia diagnosis as an adult and losing her Mum during lockdown.

We talk about imposter syndrome, the importance of tenacity in business andbeing true to yourself. And she also talks about her love for lidos! I just loved her honesty and humour despite everything that has happened and think you’re going to love listening to this…enjoy!

The impact of eye-catching packaging design as well as hidden structural design

The impact of eye-catching packaging design as well as hidden structural design

    INTRODUCTION

Are you wondering how to couple a sustainable packaging design with a memorable user experience?

With Evelio Mattos, a well-recognized structural designer, you will have a good overview of the ins and outs of packaging concept development.

We navigated the conversation from very visible branding to behind the scene systems. Yes, huge ripple effects can happen through packaging in the spotlight (with big brands and the luxury industry), as well as through the tremendous impact of tertiary packaging!

I liked how Evelio brought packaging design to highlight how much packaging impact happens before, during, and after the product gets to consumers!

Of course, you will hear a lot of examples from Evelio’s experience but from his interviewees too because Evelio Mattos is also the host of the Packaging Unboxd podcast. I encourage you to unbox even more packaging designs by following him.

I am happy to bring a sample of our strong bonds on these sound waves. Since I was a child, he made me discover a wide range of music of all kinds. I am also delighted he is a nature lover and shares the Look4Loops 'out of the box philosophy'. He is an inspiring source of creativity for me.

Peter Saville on Capturing “Nowness” Through Design

Peter Saville on Capturing “Nowness” Through Design

Peter Saville is a man of the moment—and has been, again and again, throughout the past five decades. Raised in Manchester, England, in the sixties—in tandem with the growing prominence of counterculture, the rise of anti-war sentiments, and the birth of pop—Saville developed early on a keen eye and ear for the zeitgeist, or what he terms “nowness.” In his adolescence, he took up a fervent interest in music and in record covers in particular, and went on to art school to study graphic design. In his final year, he was commissioned to design the very first posters for the punk music venue The Factory, which would soon morph into the legendary independent record label Factory Records.

Across his prolific, nearly 50-year-long career in graphic design and art direction, Saville has created album covers for Joy Division and New Order (most iconically, the one for Joy Division’s debut studio album, Unknown Pleasures); branding for clients including Ferragamo, Burberry, and Aston Martin; and more recently, even Kvadrat fabric designs—each drawing inspiration from the spirit of their times—that can be called nothing short of era-defining. Woven across all of his work are provocative dialogues between past, present, and future.

On this episode, Saville speaks with Andrew about coming of age in the punk and post-punk worlds, the increasing impossibility of tracking “nowness,” and creating literal signs of the times.

Special thanks to our Season 6 sponsor, L’ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts.

Why Is It So Hard To Give Up Fast Fashion?

Why Is It So Hard To Give Up Fast Fashion?

Fast fashion brands have never been more popular, pumping out tens of thousands of new designs every week at rock-bottom prices, with countless social media influencers showing off their 'hauls' on Instagram and TikTok.

But how are these clothes made so quickly, and at such a low cost to us as consumers? Is it all a result of slave labour and terrible environmental practices, or are they some benefits of fast fashion?

The Quicky speaks to two fashion experts to find out exactly what counts as 'fast fashion', why it's so hard for us to give up, whether it is the only option for diverse body types, and if there is a reasonably priced alternative.

If you want to know more about sustainable and humane textile manufacturing overseas, the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh works towards a safe and healthy garment and textile industry in Bangladesh.

140 Streaming the runway with Hilary Milnes, Americas Editor at Vogue Business

In the summer of 2018, we talked to Hilary Milnes about how retail isn't dead but it's changing, the struggle of shuttering department stores, and innovative ways that online and offline shopping can intersect.

Over two years later, it's a case of same same but different. Hilary is still covering retail and fashion, but as the Americas Editor for Vogue Business. And now, one year into the pandemic, these trend trajectories have spiked, forcing brands to accelerate faster than anyone predicted. The customer-facing shifts came quickly — adapting to an online fashion month, pivoting retail strategies, and riding the ephemeral wave of creator-driven trends. But behind the scenes, supply chain shifts are still happening far too slow, leaving frontline fashion workers shortchanged and overworked, even amidst consumer outcries.

On this episode, Hilary Milnes has optimistic and pessimistic takes on which of these shifts will stick in a post-pandemic world. She also illuminates new opportunities or smaller fashion brands and the ever-growing, ever-elusive role of the "creator."
