202: How to Build a Socially Conscious Business with Stephanie Malon-Rufi

Today’s episode is about a topic that is near and dear to my heart; How to create and maintain a socially conscious business.

My passion for this probably comes as no surprise, given the titles of my podcast and of my membership program, Making Good and Making Good Happen. Many if not most of this show’s listeners are, or want to be, socially conscious entrepreneurs, and it has been such a joy to witness the community forming and growing around this idea. As today’s guest said, it is so vital to surround yourself with peers and fellow business owners who “get it;” who support your business’s mission for good.

To help us think through how to center doing good in our businesses, (hint: there are so, so many ways), Stephanie Malon-Rufi joined me for a fantastic conversation. Stephanie is the owner of Spark Good, where she consults with and coaches socially conscious entrepreneurs. She helps to distill their vision into a focused strategy and action plan, helps solve key challenges with mindset blocks, and helps them have a greater positive social impact with their business.

It was so much fun to get to talk with someone else in the social entrepreneurship space, I learned a lot from my chat with Stephanie. No matter where your business is in its journey for good, I know you will get a lot out of this conversation.

Activists and Innovators Part 2. Employee Activism: Change from Within

Activists and Innovators Part 2. Employee Activism: Change from Within

Some activists are on the barricades, but most of them are not. We’ll hear from those who are doing grassroots organising, raising awareness in their organisations and encouraging colleagues to speak up and take action. People like Christian Vanziette, Manuel Salazar and Desiree Fixler who are putting pressure on the company from within. Voices of dissent who are daringly speaking truth to power, challenging and resisting in the face of questionable leadership.

And we hear more from activists and experts Gail Bradbrook, Megan Reitz and Alison Taylor who have some tips for activists. Who show us we don’t all need to be on the barricades to lead change and how activists can prevent getting entangled and become part of the problem. Tune into this episode to hear about Michael’s open-minded, conscious, collaborative approach to business!

    About Michael Kuech:

Michael Kuech is an industry leader in plant-based living and transparent supply chains. Over the past decade, Michael and his partner Kristel have built their superfood brand Your Super into one of the fastest-growing companies in America. The company was founded after Michael was diagnosed with cancer at age 24 and realized how powerful food is as medicine. “You can not control everything in life, but you can control what you eat and how you fuel your body.”

Their book, “Your Super Life“, is a comprehensive guide to harnessing the natural healing potential of superfoods. With over 100 nourishing recipes featuring potent healing ingredients, Michael and Kristel empower readers to optimize their health and well-being through delicious and nutritious meals.

Get the Your Super Life book on the website or at your favorite book store!

    Episode highlights:

    • Always be open to change. As hard as it is to transition out of your comfort zone, it’s so important not to get stuck in your ways. When you embrace change, you increase your opportunities for success. (10:34)
    • There are so many people who have had experiences that you can learn from and who would love to share their knowledge. Don’t be afraid to ask for help; if you focus too much on your own personal journey, it’s easy to lose perspective. (13:07)
    • Do the right thing. Running a business doesn’t just have to be about making money; it can be a real force for good. Everybody wins if entrepreneurs adopt a conscious approach to business. (20:05)
    • Cultivate a mission that is greater than yourself, and don’t lose focus! Your north star should be the guiding principle throughout your entrepreneurial journey (Michael’s is to improve peoples’ health); this is how you will create a truly sustainable business. (27:44)

    Michael’s best advice for entrepreneurs:

“Learn to have other people give you guidance, give you help, other experiences. Be open to change.” (12:50)

A common concern for founders like yourself is how to overcome and recover from financial adversity. Tim Frick: Responsible Business in the Digital Economy

Tim Frick: Responsible Business in the Digital Economy

Part of the puzzle of building a more sustainable future is getting to a place of shared understanding about the challenges we face, and the impact of our actions. But this can be tricky when the problems seem invisible or difficult to measure. Our guest this week is Tim Frick, founder and CEO of Mightybytes, a digital agency and B Corp based in Chicago. Tim has spent more than two decades working to tackle problems at the intersection of design, technology, marketing, and sustainability, and to create digital solutions that are better for both people and planet.

The Digital Economy, encompassing the internet, digital computing, and now blockchain technology, has transformed our lives. It’s changed how businesses are structured and operated, how consumers access and obtain goods and services, and these days, especially since the pandemic, how many of us work. But few of us stop to think about the environmental impacts of this new economy, and we should.

In this episode of Purpose Works, Tim and and host Maren Keeley, cofounder & CEO of Handprint, discuss the challenges that emerge from a constantly shifting technological landscape, and what corporate digital responsibility looks like in 2022.

Ryan Honeyman: B Corps and the Business of Doing Good

What is the role of purpose in business? And what does a conscious company look like in 2022? The number of B Corp certifications is rising rapidly, and purpose is becoming more mainstream, but we still have a long way to go toward building a racially just, regenerative economy. This week on Purpose Works, we welcome Ryan Honeyman, a Partner / Worker-Owner at LIFT Economy, an impact consulting firm, and co-author of The B Corp Handbook: How to Use Business as a Force for Good.

When it comes to helping businesses become certified B Corps, Ryan is “the guy” everyone turns to for advice. He has helped over 50 companies — like Patagonia, Allbirds, Ben & Jerry’s, King Arthur Flour, Tanka Bar, Animikii, and Red Bay Coffee — become certified, re-certify, and maximize the value of their B Corp certification. Ryan is also a cohost of the Next Economy Now podcast and a cofounder of the Force for Good Fund, which invests in women and POC-owned “Best for the World” B Corps. He has written articles for Stanford Social Innovation Review, Fast Company, Huffington Post, and many more, and Ryan has spoken extensively at many conferences and top business schools about B Corps and what he calls a whole-systems approach to using business as a force for good.

In this episode of Purpose Works, Ryan and host Maren Keeley, cofounder & CEO of Handprint, discuss how businesses are evolving with the purpose economy and adapting to cultural shifts that demand greater responsibility and action on matters of social justice and climate change.

Natasha's wealth management firm focuses its investments on both profitable returns & stakeholder well-being, and her efforts have directly led to meaningful change at high profile companies like Citigroup, Apple, Nike, Amazon, and more. She has graced the cover of Bloomberg Businessweek and was named one of the 50 most influential people in business for her meaningful work on bridging gender and racial pay equity.
