Episode 77: Painless Parker and the Actual Shogun Guy

Episode 77: Painless Parker and the Actual Shogun Guy

A lot of people say dentistry lost its street cred when it started happening in "Offices" with "Sterile Instruments" and "Windows that close," and at one point the Street Dentist who legally changed his first name to Painless to avoid a lawsuit would have agreed with you. Today we learn about this ... guy ... in the history of dentistry. Plus, a look at Tokugawa Ieyasu, the actual guy at the center of James Clavell's incredibly lengthy but surprisingly pretty good historical novel "Shogun."
PROGRAMMING NOTE: The guy Amanda couldn't remember in this episode was Charles Bronson.

Once Upon a Time in the West [1968]

Jackie and Greg are joined on the old dusty trail by Becca Deveaux from the "This Cinematic Life" blog in their discussion of Sergio Leone's epic spaghetti western, ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST from 1968. Topics of discussion include whether the film is an anti-western, Leone as a mythmaker, a theory on Charles Bronson's character having been dead the whole time, a breakdown of Ennio Morricone's legendary score, and why more films need to swing for the fences.

    ...about The Indian Runner (1991)

    ...about The Indian Runner (1991)

Sean Penn interprets a stark Springsteen song as his directorial debut and launches the career of Viggo Mortensen

Written & Directed by Sean Penn. Starring David Morse, Viggo Mortensen, Patricia Arquette, Valeria Golino, Charles Bronson, Sandy Dennis & Dennis Hopper

How is the world wrong about The Indian Runner?

From Andras: Sean Penn’s first film as a director is his best. Is it the first films of the 1990’s? A difficult character study based upon “Highway Patrolman”, a Bruce Springsteen song from his dark acoustic masterpiece “Nebraska” featuring three of the decade’s most defining cinematic performers; Patricia Arquette, Benicio Del Toro (in one scene) and Viggo Mortensen’s debut as a leading man/anti-hero. And yet…you don’t really hear people talk about this film much. That’s just plain wrong.

    Kid Galahad (1962)

    Kid Galahad (1962)

Our first Elvis movie and we get into what we thought about his nipples right away!  We watch Kid Galahad, the remake, and realize right away it's not up to the same caliber than the original, but did we like it better?  Maybe...

Besides Elvis's nipples, we also talk about Charles Bronson's unexplained limp,  the music in the film, and a bevy of strange lines.  Let's all go to Cream Valley, NY (gross) and duke it out!

    Next film:  Wimbledon

Wimbledon isn't streaming anywhere for free so either rent it or check out your local library.
