Once Upon a Time in the West [1968]

Jackie and Greg are joined on the old dusty trail by Becca Deveaux from the "This Cinematic Life" blog in their discussion of Sergio Leone's epic spaghetti western, ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST from 1968. Topics of discussion include whether the film is an anti-western, Leone as a mythmaker, a theory on Charles Bronson's character having been dead the whole time, a breakdown of Ennio Morricone's legendary score, and why more films need to swing for the fences.

The Thing 40th Anniversary Special - Episode 93

The Thing 40th Anniversary Special - Episode 93

When John Carpenter was first contacted about potentially directing a remake of the 1951 classic “The Thing from Another World,” he was reluctant to sign onto the project.

The studio had already hired and fired “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” director Tobe Hooper and Carpenter didn’t really see a path to a creative remake from a film he admired so much.

But it was his first chance to move from independent cinema to do a studio film so Carpenter eventually decided to take on the project while putting his own original spin on the concept where he wouldn’t try to hide the creature but rather explore the various incarnations of an alien who could assume the identity of any host it invaded.

Rob Bottin was brought on board to handle the practical effects for the film, which ended up eating a huge part of the budget but it also helped create many of the most iconic moments in the movie.

Set in a remote science station in Antarctica, a group of American scientists soon discover that they are not alone after an alien presence that can duplicate any one of them begins to systematically dismantle them one by one while proving that man really is the warmest place to hide…

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of one of the most iconic horror films in history, Rewind of the Living Dead will grab the flamethrowers and get ready to do a blood test as we look back on John Carpenter’s “The Thing”…

Season 4: The Horror, The Horror - The Thing (Episode 50)

In the season finale of Season 4 (The Horror, The Horror) Kyle is joined by a panel of guests, cinematographer Josh Carter, script supervisor Katy Baldwin, and filmmaker Michael Willer (of the Big Fat Gay Podcast), to discuss John Carpenter's exquisite rumination on the true fearful unknowns of trust, identity, and self in the thrilling adaptation of John W. Campbell Jr.'s Who Goes There?, The Thing.

...about State Of Grace (1990) with Zack Carlson

...about State Of Grace (1990) with Zack Carlson

“State Of Grace” is the film that should have ensured the whole world learned how to pronounce Phil Joanou’s last name. For reasons we will explore with guest co-host Zack Carlson…it didn’t work out that way.

Directed by Phil Joanou. Starring Sean Pean, Gary Oldman, Robin Wright, Ed Harris, John C. Reilly & John Turturro

How is the world wrong about this movie?

From Andras: I like “State Of Grace” more than “Good Fellas”. I wouldn’t even make the comparison if the two films hadn’t been released the same weekend. Oh sure…”Good Fellas” is a “better movie” but I like the actors in this one more and if I’m even twenty percent correct in my perverse opinion, this is a film all lovers of 90’s crime dramas should re-assess, if only to appreciate the greatness of Robin Wright’s performance with all these tough guys.

    The Thing-Who can you trust?

    The Thing-Who can you trust?

Imagine being in US research facility in the middle of Antarctica with a group of guys whose tempers are already waring pretty thin. Now imagine that an parasitic alien creature that can perfectly mimic any living creature infiltrates their camp and starts assimilating the men one-by-one. All hell is about to break loose in John Carpenter's 1982 horror thriller The THING.
