Episode 3 Season 3: Real. Relevant. Relationship. The Role God Plays in our Recovery

    Episode Description:

Real. Relevant. Relationship. The Role God Plays in our Recovery is a concept God put on my heart, and I didn't know what I would say until the podcast was recorded. The role God plays in our recovery is everything. Some will say if you aren't recovering from difficult emotions, trauma, depression, anxiety, or abuse, you don't have enough faith in God or you're not doing enough of something, but most of the time, this simply isn't true. It's both our relationship with God and the scientific modalities that target trauma at its source combined, that help us make progress in recovery. While this is true, our real, relevant relationship with God lights the way, and as we heal, the holes we punch in our trauma let the light and love of God in, so we can live the vivid and beautiful life God meant for us, in full living color.

Episode 2 Season 3: How Internal Family Systems Can Help You Heal Trauma

Episode 2 Season 3: How Internal Family Systems Can Help You Heal Trauma

    Episode Description:

How Internal Family Systems Can Help You Heal Trauma describes a therapy called IFS for short, what IFS is, how it can help you heal trauma and difficult emotions, and how you can use this therapy for your own healing journey with a therapist or on your own. We learn about how IFS is broken down into parts and self, how these parts and self interact based on your past experiences, and how you can relate to these parts and self to help you heal emotionally. By learning how your mind works through this process, you have a way go inside the roots of your thoughts, emotions, and trauma and understand how they function. With this understanding, you can relate to yourself and parts with more compassion, deal with past experiences with more awareness, and build an identity that is strong, more integrated, and healthy, so you can live the life God made you to live.

Episode 1 Season 3: Twelve Steps Recovery and How it Can Help You Heal Trauma and Abuse

Episode 1 Season 3: Twelve Steps Recovery and How it Can Help You Heal Trauma and Abuse

Welcome back! Twelve Steps Recovery and How it Can Help You Heal Trauma and Abuse is the first episode of the new season. Most people are familiar with Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and how it helps those recovering from alcohol misuse, but many people don't know there are programs for other forms of recovery. We'll discuss what twelve-step programs are, how they can help those not only in addiction recovery, but in emotional recovery as well.

There is a direct link between addiction and trauma, and many addictions have traumatic and psychological roots. Trauma and codependency recovery programs have their roots in original twelve-step programs like AA. We'll discuss four twelve step programs--Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Codependents Anonymous (CoDA), Celebrate Recovery, and Al-Anon--and what each one does, who each helps, how each can help you, and how these programs can strengthen your faith in God. Then we'll discuss how addiction and trauma recovery have similarities when it comes to behavior, causes, and relapses, as well as strategies to stay on the path to recovery. Lastly, we'll discover how the steps in these programs can help you cut the roots of trauma and addiction in your life for good.

Episode 18 Season 2: Ten Ways to Set Healthy Boundaries

Episode 18 Season 2: Ten Ways to Set Healthy Boundaries

    Episode Description:

This episode was adapted from a recent Youtube video. Check out and subscribe to the Youtube channel linked below for more talks like this one not found in the podcast. This talk discusses what healthy boundaries are and what they are not. In the first half, we discuss what a boundary is using Henry Cloud's metaphor of property lines and why setting healthy boundaries is not only okay, but healthy. Setting boundaries is not selfish. You must set healthy boundaries to be a functional human being and to build loving relationships. We also discuss ways setting boundaries helps us obey God and consider others' needs. In order to set good boundaries, you need to understand the value of your own agency, autonomy, and individuality. Through this episode, we discuss who we might set boundaries with, reasons we don't set boundaries, differences between people with healthy boundaries and those without good boundaries, and ten specific strategies to set healthy boundaries. This video will help you learn to take care of yourself and love who God made you to be.

    Resources:

10 Ways to Build and Preserve Better Boundaries in Psych Central by Shannon Martin, LCSW is an article I reference in the video that discusses what boundaries are, why they are necessary, why we are afraid to set boundaries, strategies to set them, and specific scenarios that give examples of healthy boundary setting.

Boundaries: When to Say YES and When to Say NO to Take Control of Your Life by Henry Cloud and Peter Townsend was mentioned as a recommended book to go more into detail with setting healthy boundaries in different situations and with different people.

Understanding this system will help you know why trauma gets stuck in the body, and you can become aware of these states and start practicing specific techniques to stay in a regulated state. Episode 16 Season 2: Somatic Practices for Healing Trauma Part II: Practices You Can Do With a Professional is Part II

    Episode Description:

Somatic Practices for Healing Trauma Part II: Practices You Can Do With a Professional is Part II of a two-part series on somatic therapies for healing trauma. This series covers practices you can do on your own or with a professional. Somatic therapy is based on more recent research and generally more effective than talk therapy for healing trauma. It's basically another name for body work, or connecting with the body's sensations and resources to heal trauma stuck in the body so it can release through your neural network. This may include therapies with a specialist who does body work with you to release trauma or heal the effects of trauma. Part II discusses co-regulation with a therapist, body therapies you can do with a specialist, and breakthrough treatments in trauma recovery that are still in their experimental phases like micro dosing under a special doctor's care, and utilizing new devices for healing trauma.

While each of these are distinct experiences, they are also similar in that there is a temptation to go back into conditioned patterns, addictive behaviors, and trauma based thinking from your past that can throw you back into bondage. You have every right to leave this old life behind. This episode gives you strategies, techniques, and encouragement to stay strong, stay the course, not return to old chains, and live the overcoming life God intended you to have.

    Video Description:
Trauma Recovery is tricky work, and it's easy in everyday life and when we're doing healing work with a therapist or on our own to unintentionally retraumatize ourselves through no fault of our own. Knowing what works and doesn't work is vital to trauma recovery. Most people don't understand the nature of trauma recovery, and even many well-meaning experts can cause more harm than good when trying to help you. Often, we don't even know that certain events, healing strategies, or circumstances can retraumatize us. This video discusses ten specific ways we inadvertently become retraumatized and then ten solutions to avoid retraumatizing ourselves when doing healing work. We go into detail about why retraumatization happens in these situations and specific techniques that will help you move forward with healing work, while protecting yourself from further trauma. With the right education and tools, you CAN move forward instead of backward in your recovery journey and achieve Healing That Sticks!

Episode 12 Season 2: Childhood Emotional Neglect: A Hidden Epidemic

    Episode Description:

Childhood Emotional Neglect: A Hidden Epidemic illuminates the often hidden and confusing nature of childhood emotional neglect, also called CEN. If you feel like something is wrong with you, but can't put your finger on it, there is a possibility it could be childhood emotional neglect. Because of the hidden nature of childhood emotional neglect, many people go their entire lives unhealed of trauma that isn't their fault.

This episode discusses what childhood emotional neglect is, how it impacts survivors, why we often don't believe we've experienced this ourselves, how we can overcome this disbelief if there is strong evidence we survived childhood emotional neglect, and how we can overcome and heal from this silent epidemic.

Episode 11 Season 2: How Grit and Resilience Can Help You Heal Trauma

Episode 11 Season 2: How Grit and Resilience Can Help You Heal Trauma

    Episode Description:
How Grit and Resilience Can Help You Heal Trauma helps you consider a balanced approach to healing trauma that works. Many of us have been shamed for not knowing how to heal, and we've been told that we don't pray enough or have enough faith. We've also been told to bootstrap our healing, and if we can't, it's our fault. This approach is toxic and retraumatizing, and it doesn't work.

Likewise, many of us have been taught helplessness through example or because we've experienced so much abuse, neglect, pain, and disappointment that we no longer believe healing is possible because we feel we've tried everything. We begin to feel beaten down and hopeless. This is learned helplessness, and while it's not our fault, it CAN be overcome with a trauma informed approach. We CAN heal trauma when we balance grit, resilience, and learned optimism as skills that can be cultivated with self-compassion and body based resiliency techniques. With the right tools, healing is possible!
