    It's All In Your Head

    It's All In Your Head

If you have chronic back pain, something's wrong...right? Maybe not. Sometimes, it might all be in your head... or at least, in the neurons of your brain. Listen in as neurosurgeon Dr. Erich Anderer explains how pain isn't that simple, and how incorporating ancient practices into modern therapies can help treat chronic back pain.

    Pain Brain Movie Review

In this episode, I discuss Alan Gordon's film, Pain Brain, which explores somatic tracking as a potential solution for chronic pain. The film highlights the study at University of Colorado at Boulder, on unlearning pain.I also emphasize the need for a paradigm shift in pain treatment and considering alternative approaches, as well as the importance of a balanced approach that considers mental well-being.

Relief for Back Pain Using Several Modalities

These days it is not uncommon to be on several medications for the same condition. It is called stacking. The idea is that one particular drug does one particular thing. By combining several medications the thought is that health is obtained quicker. Well, when it comes to treating lower back pain I espouse the same principle. Core Health Darien offers cutting-edge therapy to get you faster relief from your lower back pain.

When a patient comes to me with a back problem their primary concerns are number one can I help them number two how much is it going to cost? Both are reasonable questions. In today's insurance climate there is very little coverage for chiropractic care. What this means is that we as chiropractors have to work faster to help people with bad backs. The faster we deliver results the less expensive care is for the patient.

In order to deliver quality care in today's insurance climate people with lower back pain. When you apply multiple therapies the results can be speeded up. The patient gains relief and the care can be delivered in a much quicker fashion thus saving time and money. Have a question? Call Core Health Darien 203-656-3636. If you want fast effective relief for your lower back pain you need to try this out.

    Can we 'unlearn' chronic pain?

    Can we 'unlearn' chronic pain?

Few sensations are as primal, as fundamental to our very survival, as pain.

But for a fifth of Australian adults, that useful protective mechanism lingers as chronic pain — persistent aching, searing, stabbing sensations, which can be incredibly stressful and debilitating.

What if you could dial down that pain — or even extinguish it altogether — by retraining your brain?

Stamford CT What is Spinal Decompression for Back Pain?

Stamford CT What is Spinal Decompression for Back Pain?

What is Spinal Decompression for Low Back Pain?

About 30 years ago a brilliant neurosurgeon by the name of Norman Sheely decided that there had to be something besides surgery to heal chronic low back pain. He came up with a special traction machine that gently pulls the spinal bones apart. This virtually painless treatment lasts about 20 minutes. It is much more effective if done in conjunction with a chiropractic adjustment. If you reorganize the spine and pelvis first you will remove the underlying causes of herniated or bulging discs. When the adjustment is done first and then the herniated disc is nudged back into its proper location using spinal decompression we can expect 70-80% improvement. Here you have a safe alternative to surgery, which has only roughly a 50% chance of working.

Does Insurance Cover Spinal Decompression for Back Pain?

Plain and simply no, insurance does not pay for spinal decompression. It takes years for insurance companies to recognize a valid treatment. Most people pay for their care out of pocket or use health savings accounts.

How many Spinal Decompression Treatments are Needed for Chronic Back Pain?

Usually, 20-24 sessions of spinal decompression are enough to get the disc back to where it belongs. Each session lasts about 30 minutes and is followed up with physical therapy consisting of electric muscle stimulation and heat. The heat has an analgesic effect and the muscle stimulation helps the smaller spinal muscles contract. Studies indicate that spinal decompression for back pain has been reported to be 71-89% effective.

How Does Spinal Decompression for Back Pain Work?

When a disc herniates or bulges the disc puts pressure on the spinal cord or the spinal nerve. Either of these events can be quite painful. What spinal decompression does for the disc is that it creates negative pressure within the disc. The negative pressure creates a vacuum for the cerebrospinal fluid to re-absorb into the disc space. When you squeeze toothpaste onto your toothbrush there is a little that remains outside. When you relieve the pressure on the tube the toothpaste goes back into the tube. This is exactly how spinal decompression for back pain works.

What does spinal decompression feel like?

You really should feel very little the first few treatments. Your spine n

    Benefits of Stand Up Desk

    Benefits of Stand Up Desk

Why is standing better than sitting at a desk all day?

Chiropractors see a wide range of spinal problems, and a lot of them have to do with poor posture and prolonged sitting or slouching. Too much lumbar pressure from constant sitting can lead to back pain. Also, extended sitting means your abdominal and hamstring muscles are contracted for hours at a time. This could lead to a weakened core and less flexibility, putting you at higher risk of potential injury and pain. But how do you combat these side effects of sitting when you have so much work to do?

If you ask your chiropractor, they may tell you to take standing and stretching breaks throughout the day, because this allows your muscles to relax. Standing also burns more calories than sitting which in turn helps you combat weight gain. Plus, each time you stand you can actively correct your posture and remind yourself to avoid the temptation to slouch when you sit back down at your desk.

Standing at work, whether it's getting out and going for a quick walk around the office or using a standing desk instead of a traditional one, can increase muscle movement and give your physical health a boost.

Strategies to Make Sure Your Low-Back Pain Goes Away

32% of acute back pain cases go on to develop long-lasting pain. Using the wrong treatment for acute low back pain can increase the risk of developing chronic low back pain. What can be done to reduce that transfer rate from acute to chronic low back pain? Are there other risk factors contributing to the development of chronic low back pain? A brand new study gives us answers to these questions.

Herniated or Bulging Disc? Stamford, darien, Norwalk, New Canaan CT

Herniated or Bulging Disc? Stamford, darien, Norwalk, New Canaan CT

What does it mean when you have a herniated disc in your back?

A herniated disc often referred to as a bulging disc is a condition that indicates a problem with a rubbery disc between the spinal bones. The disc is made from cartilage and acts as a shock absorber that allows the spinal vertebra to move dynamically with mechanical efficiency. This condition occurs when the soft center of a spinal disc pushes through a crack in the tougher exterior casing. This causes the disc to put pressure on the spinal cord and the nerve roots that exit the spine at the intervertebral foramen. The lower back pain a herniated disc causes can be severe and debilitating.

What are the symptoms of a herniated disc?

If you have a herniated lumbar disc, you may feel the pain that radiates from your low back area, down one or both legs, and sometimes into your feet (called sciatica). You may feel pain like an electric shock that is severe whether you stand, walk, or sit. Time to call yur chiropractor who specializes in treating bulging discs.
Some herniated discs cause no symptoms. Others can irritate nearby nerves and result in pain, numbness, or weakness in an arm or leg. The more chronic the condition of the herniated disc the greater the severity of the pain. Some MRI imaging studies show severely damaged spinal discs, yet the patient has no pain. It should be noted that of the 9 nerve types that exit the spine, only 2 deal with pain. So you should be concerned with other symptoms such as muscle strength loss, as well as numbness and tingling. The numbness and tingling are clinically significant. The nerves causing numbness and tingling are typically large-diameter afferent nerves that send signals directly from the body part to and from the brain. Weakness is a major concern especially in the absence of lower back pain as these large diameter afferent nerves help regulate the autonomic nervous system

Best Treatment for a herniated or bulging disc.

If you leave a herniated disc untreated, you may experience intense, sharp pains, partial paralysis, or the inability to control bowel movements in relatively dire situations. The most effective treatment for a bulging disc or a herniated disc is chiropractic care. A chiropractor will remove the pressure being placed on the herniated disc. Often additional physical therapy is applied to help soothe the overworked spinal muscl

Stamford CT Back Pain Relief From a New Mattress?

Stamford CT Back Pain Relief From a New Mattress?

What’s the best mattress for relieving lower back pain?

1 in 3 people in the U.S. don't get enough sleep. Not having at least seven hours of sleep a night can be detrimental to a person's health and make it difficult for them to function during work and daily activities. A chronic lack of sleep also puts people at an elevated risk of developing serious health conditions such as low back pain obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and mental health disorders. Giving the body the proper time to rest and recover is also good for spine health, but sometimes spinal pain and problems can make it harder for people to sleep through the night.

It's so important to get a good night's sleep and protect your spine while sleeping, which is why you need to find a supportive mattress. It's all about finding a mattress that's the right balance of soft yet firm. Here are two of the most common chiropractic suggestions on the best mattresses for spine health and optimal comfort.

Lumbar spine support - for back pain sufferers, it's important to have a supportive mattress that pushes against the body to allow the low back to relax. If you sleep on your back, you want to be sure you don't sink into an overly comfy mattress, as then your muscles need to work overtime to support the low back.

Pressure relief - if you need a break from spinal pressure, you should have a high-quality mattress with gentle yet firm support. The hips and shoulders are two areas that need pressure relief during the night to prevent compression and stress. If you have pain in these spots or you like to sleep on your side, then a mattress that offers varying degrees of pressure for better pain relief is a good deal. Memory foam and adjustable mattresses are two great examples of mattress types to help relieve low back pain.

So you stretch and still have tight hamstrings? here is why

    Back Pain & Tight Hamstrings?

If I had a dollar for every time someone tells me that their back pain is due to tight hamstrings I would be sitting on my own private island being served Pina Coladas right now. Yes, tight hamstrings play a role. rarely is the entire problem due to the biceps femoris and semitendinosus and semimembranosus. In case you were not aware of it these are the muscles that make up your hamstrings. Try and think of your leg as part of a whole unit that starts with your core stomach muscles and some little-known back muscles then into the pelvis and the gluteals before you get to the hamstrings. They make up what we call a motor unit. So backpain is rarely just due to the tightness in your hamstrings.
The Erector Spinae muscle actually consists of three columns of muscles, the Iliocostalis, Longissimus, and Spinalis, each running parallel on either outer side of the vertebra and extending from the lower back of the skull all the way down to the Pelvis. The muscles that run parallel to the spine are called the multifidus muscles. Here lies a hidden gem when it comes to treating lower back pain, especially lower back pain that you might think of as tight hamstrings. I have yet to hear an orthopedic tell you that your problem could be due to a problem with your multifidus, maybe you have. I have been doing this for 30 years and am still waiting for an orthopedic to tell me this is the cause of lower back pain.
The multifidus muscle is an important stabilizer of the lumbar spine. It functions together with transversus abdominis and pelvic floor muscles for spine stability. Multifidus muscle weakness and atrophy is associated with chronic low back pain. This muscle extends lengthwise down much of the spine and has 4 parts: Cervical (neck), thoracic (corresponding approximately with the upper and mid-back area), lumbar (your low back), and sacral (corresponding to the sacrum, which is below your low back. So if you overlook the importance of spinal stabilization you may never figure out your lower back problem. The multifidus extends the back, which is analogous to making an arching movement. These muscles also contribute to s

Stamford Back Pain is it a muscle or is it mechanical?

Stamford Back Pain is it a muscle or is it mechanical?

    Mechanical Low Back Pain?
90% of patients who present with low back pain feel that their back discomfort is muscular in nature. Here is what I discover when I analyze a patient, I discover that the muscle attaches to the bone in the area of pain is being stretched too far or is too weak. The underlying cause of muscle pain is due to extension or weakness.
If the common approach is Advil or Aleve then there will be an improvement in low back discomfort due to the muscular element, now. If there is a structural misalignment the pain will return as quickly as the impacts of the NSAIDs subside. This produces a cycle of lower back pain where the neck and back pain victim has good days and bad days. When there are good days it is natural to assume that the issue is resolved. Just yesterday I experienced a patient who spent over a month in bed from the extreme back pain she was having a couple of months back. Ultimately, she had the ability to return to work but still has back pain regularly. I attempted to tell her that the issue still exists or she would not still have back pain. The pain enhanced but the underlying mechanical deficit still exists. She preferred to wait until the pain returned hoping it would not. Experience tells me that the neck and back pain will return and probably harmed as much as the month-long episode.
Neck and back pain is seldom a one-time occasion. Yes, the discomfort might come and go however the problem triggering it resides on. When discomfort is not as bad, a bad lower back is simpler and less costly to repair. Try informing that to somebody whose discomfort is not that bad despite the fact that it is persistent in nature.
When the bone loses mechanical effectiveness the muscle has to work more difficult. When that takes place the muscle will ultimately spasm and tighten up to fulfill the increased mechanical loading. Adhesions in the muscle helps support the wayward bone causing the pain however tend to reduce the muscle.
This might come as a surprise however arthritis is discomfort, wearing away of the bone, and lack of movement. So it needs to be apparent that a misaligned bone triggers the muscle to overwork leading to adhesions to restrict and buttress the area motion due to the shortening of the
