The Two Guys in My Head: Embracing Guidance and Discarding Negativity

The Two Guys in My Head: Embracing Guidance and Discarding Negativity
In this episode, I talk about the common little chats we have in our minds, which I describe as voices on our shoulders. Through personal stories and things I've learned, I show how the friendly 'right voice' helps us through tough times, helping us grow. On the other hand, the mean 'left voice' can mislead us. By sharing my own ups and downs, like tough times with loved ones and getting through a hard divorce, I highlight how listening to the 'right voice' helps us get better and build stronger bonds with others.

    Removing The Plank

    Removing The Plank

"Judge not, that you be not judged" Matthew 7:2. It was Dietrich Bonhoeffer who once said, “Judging others makes us blind, whereas love is illuminating. By judging others we blind ourselves to our own evil and to the grace which others are just as entitled to as we are.” In today's episode we'll discuss how to not have a fault finding spirt of condemnation, but to instead judge with a spirt of righteousness and love.

The Assurance of Security in Christ

The Assurance of Security in Christ
Continuing our study of Romans today Pastor Mark brings us to the part consider to be the summit (these verses) of the Mt. Everest (chapter 8) of the book of Romans. Consider with us the four questions and answers provided in these verses: who can be against us since God is for us; how God will graciously give us all things proven as though the giving of his Son; who can bring a charge against those in Christ because it is God who justifies; and who can condemn those in Christ because Jesus in interceding for them.

Episode 273: Romans 2 Part 1 Not So Fast Christians!

Episode 273: Romans 2 Part 1 Not So Fast Christians!
Christians run to Romans 1 as fast as they can to condemn what is going on in our society today because it’s easy pickings. We want to condemn the behavior that is being paraded around and being thrown in our faces, but as sick and sinful as it is, you may want to read Romans 2 before you start body slamming people over how they live. Paul starts out chapter 2 by telling the church at Rome, “You may think you can condemn such people, but you are just as bad, and you have no excuse!” The old saying is still true, “I may have a finger pointing at you, but there are three pointing back at me!”

To Love or Condemn: That Should Not be the Question!

To Love or Condemn: That Should Not be the Question!
If you ever have the opportunity to love or condemn, always choose love. Why? Condemnation makes us operate at a deficit. We are not in the business of condemning others. We were meant to love and be loved. Don't get distracted by agendas that promote hate and robs you of your peace of mind. Protect your mind, body and soul by keeping it as positive as you can. Will there be bad times? Of course! But we have the power to choose. And when you find yourself in a position where you can either condemn or love, choose love. It will never let you down.

What Does the Bible Say About the Blood of Christ #2?

What Does the Bible Say About the Blood of Christ #2?

In this second episode about Jesus' blood, we begin by noting that Paul states that those who treat His blood irreverently are condemned. We next look at what Paul tells the Ephesians, specifically that they enjoy redemption, forgiveness of sins and the benefit of God's grace because of Jesus' blood. We discuss these terms. We note that the Hebrew writer mentions eternal redemption and one's conscience and we note how these subjects are connected with the blood of Christ. Peter also mentions the redeeming power of Jesus' blood as does Paul, and we talk about that. Paul is very specific about the condition the Gentiles found themselves in relating to God and how Jesus was responsible for their salvation. We complete this episode by looking at what the Hebrew writer said about the blood sacrifices in the Old Testament and Jesus' sacrifice in the New. Take about 30 minutes to listen in on our discussion. Have your Bible handy so you can verify what we are saying. There is a transcript provided for this Buzzsprout episode for your convenience.

James 4: Who are You to Judge Your Neighbor?

James 4: Who are You to Judge Your Neighbor?

    James 4:11-12

James asks, "Who are you to judge your neighbor?" What if we didn't just treat that question rhetorically? What if we actually dug into this issue about judgment, neighbors, and the royal law? What if we found out there is actually a time when we are supposed to exercise judgments in relation to our neighbors? Andrew and Edwin look back at Jesus's statements of the greatest commands and Leviticus 19 where the second greatest command was originally stated in order to answer James's question.

    Do Not Judge

    Do Not Judge
Hypocrite. It's a strong word. One that Jesus typically reserved for the religious elite of His day. But today He directs it at us. He calls us out. And that should get our attention! Thankfully, Jesus not only diagnoses our condition; He also hands us a prescription. Quite literally. Taking this one to heart will preserve unity in the body and keep us from becoming those who shut the kingdom in people's faces.

    Romans Chapter 14 Part 1

    Romans Chapter 14 Part 1
Are we called to judge one another? And the answer that question is no, we are not. Now, some time ago earlier in our study of this same book, the book of Romans and chapter two, I made that same statement. And I received much correspondence from people who disagreed, and they disagreed based upon two scriptures. A Warning to the Rich

    A Warning to the Rich

James calls out the wealthy who are hoarding, withholding, living in self-indulgence and even stealing life from those of lesser means.  Wealth is not evil, but when we find our security and significance in it,  we can do unthinkable things.  The gospel shows us an altogether different way to live.

    God is Greater - 1 John 3:19-22

    God is Greater - 1 John 3:19-22

19 And by this we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him.

20 For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.

21 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God.

22 And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.

MD 66 - Do As I Say, AND As I Do

MD 66 - Do As I Say, AND As I Do

Welcome to episode 66 of the Mayberry Devotional entitled “Do As I Say, AND As I Do”.  Today I’ll be looking at season two, episode thirty-one of The Andy Griffith Show, “Deputy Otis.”  I’ll also be looking at Scripture from Titus 2:7-8.

Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us.  ESV

"I Do Not Condemn You" - John 7:53-8:11

"I Do Not Condemn You" - John 7:53-8:11

They went each to his own house, 1 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them. 3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst 4 they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. 5 Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” 6 This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. 7 And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. 9 But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. 10 Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”

    1.     In what ways do you show and withhold dignity from people?

    2.    Why does condemnation stunt communication and change?

    3.    What are who do you find yourself condemning?

    4.    How do we disagree with or call people to change without communicating condemnation?

    5.    How often do you find yourself condemning yourself?

    6.    Does God’s word to you that you are not condemned fuel your desire and efforts at change? Why or why not?
