YNFA 033: The Lost Boys, or Beach Blanket Blood Flow

Fluff up your hair, grease up your closest saxophone player and run away with Jason Patric and Kiefer Sutherland in The Lost Boys (1987). How do you tell someone you’re 40 without saying you’re 40? Is this the horniest vampire movie ever made? And if so, why did they cast such a baby-faced Corey Haim? And why is Corey Feldman doing a Rambo voice? We’d tell you if we weren’t succumbing to peer pressure to become a creature of the night.

Zo is joined by his special guest returning co-host Beth from the Made-For-TV Movie Club Podcast and they are thrust into a new world of danger with their only guidance coming from the music of a keen saxophone. What they find are a bunch of young punks causing trouble on the boardwalk, but there's more to this small gang of young ruffians that meet the eye. Could they, in fact, be vampires?

    '80s Vamps #1

For this October's theme, Leah and Bri are covering some 1980's vampire classics! We had to start with The Lost Boys (1987, dir. Joel Schumacher), one of Bri's favorite movies of all time. Join us as we discuss the film that basically invented the teen vampire genre. This episode is marked explicit for a few f-bombs, as usual.

The Lost Boys (1987) - REVIEW

The Lost Boys (1987) - REVIEW

Episode 14 - Sometimes a movie comes along and defines a generation, The Lost Boys could be just that movie. Released in 1987 this movie broke the mould of more traditional vampire films. With a great ensemble cast led by Kiefer Sutherland, he is joined by Corey Haim, Corey Feldman, Jamie Gertz, and Dianne Weist for a fun and often scary vampire romp.
The Lost Boys grossed over $32 million on its release against a budget of $8.5 million and grew to become a cult classic that is loved by many around the world still today.
The boys give the BTW treatment to The Lost Boys and answer some of the big questions like:
    1. Are the Vampires realistic enough for Gow?
    2. Why did Jason Patric make Speed 2?
    3. Did Dan forget to write a Stan Bush Kick Arse Song?

This was a fun episode about a movie that just exploded when we were growing up. The soundtrack is second to none with Australia's own INXS featuring heavily.

The Lost Boys — Episode 62

The Lost Boys — Episode 62

Vampires have always been a huge staple in horror but a script that first began circulating in the mid 80s that envisioned child-like characters more in the same vein as Peter Pan, who never grew old and could never die but were far from the bloodsucking fiends best known throughout cinema.

The film was essentially capitalizing on the popularity of “The Goonies,” which had come out two years earlier and Richard Donner, the same director for that movie, was initially attached to this one as well.

When he dropped off the project to go direct a little movie called “Lethal Weapon,” Joel Schumacher was hired to lead the film but he had a much different idea for the project.

Writer Jeffrey Boam was brought on to rework the script with teenage leads with a sexier and more dangerous vibe than the original version of the film.

With a group of up and coming stars cast in the lead roles including Jason Patric and Kiefer Sutherland, the film ended up becoming one of the most iconic horror movies of all time while also serving as the inspiration for dozens of books, comics and movies for decades to come.

In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to put the taxidermy in the closet, order some Chinese food while sharpening our stakes as we look back on the 1987 film “The Lost Boys”…

    Teen Deceit: A Double Feature

    Teen Deceit: A Double Feature

Katie, MJ, and Joe return after a brief hiatus to discuss not one, but two films! (Don’t worry, Darcy will be back soon!)

First, License to Drive (1988) provides fertile ground for theorizing a Jacob’s Ladder-esque, life-before-his-eyes story structure wherein Les Anderson (Corey Haim) dies at the end and the film circles back upon itself, Finnegans Wake style. Other topics include: Teenage deceit, personal experiences getting our licenses, the snowballing of lies, North by Northwest, patrilinear murder, Heather Graham as fey or chaos witch, the problematic nature of putting a vulnerable woman in a trunk, the greedy 80s/the reward system of cheating, and more...

Second, we have Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead (1991), Katie and Joe’s childhood fave. Nostalgic reflections ensue! Katie warmly remembers how Joe would constantly watch the VHS (recorded off of HBO) as their after school ritual. Joe recounts how Christina Applegate’s character Swell exemplified the “not a girl, not yet a woman” theme. MJ theorizes that it’s an existential survivalist thriller. Other topics include: adulthood as service, the douchey business world (“Fake it ‘til you make it!”), sexist reviews, iconic lines (“I’m right on top of that, Rose!”), twinning, latchkey kids, gender role reversal... among other things!

Then we cap it off with a compare/contrast.

Be prepared to spill your popcorn this week as we check out songs from spooky flicks! That’s right, we are going to the movies and we’re prepared for blood n’ gore n’ frights! Did you ever hear about rock bands selling their souls to the devil, and if you listen to their music or play their albums backwards that you will turn into a demonic zombie??? The 70s, 80s, and 90s were full of films about horrific demons and metal n’ punk bands either having their songs featured in the movie, or were themselves featured as the subject of the film. Grab your Reeses Pieces, large Coke, a severed limb, and hum along.

What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week Robert gets a glimpse into another collection of lost and forgotten songs from the silver screen SCREAM! Episode 48 — Stephen King's Silver Bullet

    Episode 48 — Stephen King's Silver Bullet

Back in the early 1980’s, horror legend Stephen King was working on a calendar with illustrations that would tell the story of a year long saga involving a small town being terrorized by a werewolf.

As the collection started to come together, King realized that his writing didn’t really fit in the vignette form needed for the calendar.

That’s when he decided to adapt the material into a short novel with illustrations from famed comic book artist Bernie Wrightson.

In 1983, the 127-page book was published as “Cycle of the Werewolf,” which because of the short length was technically classified as a novella and one of King’s shortest books to date.

Not long after the book was released, King began adapting the novella into a full length screenplay for a film. Initially Don Coscarelli was brought on board to direct the movie but a long drawn out argument over the look of the werewolf delayed production and he eventually left the project.

Daniel Attias was then brought onto finish the film and with his direction actor Gary Busey was able to ad lib many of his best lines, which went beyond the script and many of those actually ended up in the final cut of the movie.

While the film wasn’t a critical hit when it was first released, the movie later became recognized as a cult classic and a beloved adaptation of King’s work.

In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead as we carry on with werewolf month, we’re going to look for some private justice as we look back at the 1985 film “Silver Bullet”

The Lost Boys (1987): "Sexy, Sexy"

The Lost Boys (1987): "Sexy, Sexy"

We can’t believe it’s almost over, but we’re closing out Pride Month here at Spooky Tuesday with the film that’s simultaneously the least canonically gay and most subtextually gay out of the films we covered this month, The Lost Boys. Featuring the two Coreys, Kiefer Sutherland, and Richard Gilmore himself, this ‘80s classic teaches us — as cohost Monica put it — the ever important lesson: Motorcycles are a gateway drug.
