The Exorcist: Believer, but also The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial!

The Exorcist: Believer, but also The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial!

This week, we're comparing the most beloved movie ever made by William Friedkin and one of the last movies made by William Friedkin. That's right, The Exorcist: Believer came out recently as a reboot sequel of The Exorcist, which ignores all the subsequent sequels in true Halloween (2018). In addition to our review of that film, we discuss Friedkin's The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, an adaptation of a 50s play (originally a novel and also a film) set in the modern day. Despite being a "TV movie," it's actually fantastic?

    Show Notes

    • 00:00:00 – The Exorcist: Believer
    • 00:30:15 – The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial

The Exorcist: Believer was directed by David Gordon Green, who co-wrote the screenplay with Peter Sattler and story credits that include Green, Scott Teems, and Danny McBride. The cast includes Leslie Odom Jr., Lidya Jewett, Olivia O‘Neill, Jennifer Nettles, Norbert Leo Butz, Ann Dowd, and Ellen Burstyn. The film came out on October 6 through Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions, and it has a 111-minute runtime.

The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial was directed and written by William Friedkin, based on Herman Wouk's eponymous 1953 play, itself based on Wouk's 1952 novel The Caine Mutiny. The cast includes Kiefer Sutherland, Jason Clarke, Jake Lacy, Monica Raymund, and Lance Reddick. Additionally, the film premiered at the Venice International Film Festival on September 3 and came out on Paramount+ with Showtime on October 6. It has a 109-minute runtime.

Our intro music this week is “Which One?” by Glimlip & .multibeat.

"Flatliners": My Life with the Dead Med Cult

"Flatliners": My Life with the Dead Med Cult

To paraphrase Nelson Wright's first line in the movie, today is a good day to talk about "Flatliners." This beautiful and bizarre 1990 film directed by Joel Schumacher captivated Sarah and Raf as young adults, and they have a lot to say about it. But does it hold up like the museum's giant sculptures...or more like the leaking ceiling?

Stylish and moody, "Flatliners" is the story of five ridiculously good-looking medical students who take turns stopping their hearts to experience the afterlife. They perform their deadly hobby in secret, surrounded by dramatic sculptures and murals of Greek gods in a museum undergoing renovations. So, yeah, it's not exactly realistic. According to Sarah, "It is absolutely gorgeous, and it makes absolutely zero sense." But -- at least to our hosts -- this movie doesn't need to make sense to be enjoyed. Its striking symbolism and what Raf dubs "tasteful excess" still look stunning, especially in the recent 4K transfer. "I recognize its flaws," Sarah admits (and the film does have a lot of flaws, like cultural appropriation and misogyny), "but I also love what works about it." Raf notes, "It is one of the front-line members of the goth army," following on the heels of 80s horror classic and fellow Kiefer Sutherland vehicle "The Lost Boys."

With Spooky Season just around the corner (or already here, according to our hosts), now's the time to grab your giant pumpkin mask and consider rewatching "Flatliners." It's not for everyone; but if you're in the mood to see character traits expressed in apartment decor, highly pettable hairstyles, and a lot of eerie-looking steam, you just might enjoy seeing it again. Just please don't celebrate with a bonfire on the museum steps.

This episode of Books for Men features Bright Lights, Big City by Jay McInerney. A literary novel about a twenty-something writer who resorts to the hedonism of 1980's Manhattan—cocaine, nightclubs, etc—to cope with his hapless life. It's told using a second-person point of view, placing you in the shoes of the unnamed protagonist. Listen for more!

It's the 1980's and the goth aesthetic is insane. Michael and Sam move to Santa Carla, but soon find out that a blonde mullet-wearing guy named David runs the boardwalk. David transfixes on Michael, which is probably because he does the sluttiest thing a man can do (wear a dangling earring).

Toss back that gorgeous mullet and shoot before you ask as we ride off into the sunset with the 1988 Brat Pack classic Young Guns. How many more enjoyable Westerns could we have watched instead of this? (Answer: all of them.) Is this movie the nail in the coffin for the Dermot Mulroney vs Dylan McDermott debate just because of how unarguably revolting "Dirty" Stephens is? Which is longer, the eventual heat death of the universe or this movie? Find out these answers and more life lessons under Terence Stamp’s tough love tutelage.

    Midweek Mention... Phone Booth

    Midweek Mention... Phone Booth

We've been stanning for Colin Farrell for some time now and following his portrayal of quiet and modest heroism in THIRTEEN LIVES. I thought we should take a look at his back catalogue to work out whether there were early signs of his promise. It turns out there were. PHONE BOOTH (2002) is Joel Schumacher's expertly-paced, gimmicky thriller set in real time and virtually a single-location which sees Farrell captivating as the sleazy and obnoxious New York yuppie who finds himself engaged in a cat and mouse game with Kiefer Sutherland's psychotic sniper. Tense and claustrophobic and showcasing a number of amusing early noughties trends, from the fashions and styles to the editing and themes, this is well worth a rewatch.

Happy Halloween da draußen! Passend zum Tag besprechen wir einen Kultfilm der 80er, wobei Rufus nicht ansatzweise so begeistert ist wie Timbob... YNFA 033: The Lost Boys, or Beach Blanket Blood Flow

Fluff up your hair, grease up your closest saxophone player and run away with Jason Patric and Kiefer Sutherland in The Lost Boys (1987). How do you tell someone you’re 40 without saying you’re 40? Is this the horniest vampire movie ever made? And if so, why did they cast such a baby-faced Corey Haim? And why is Corey Feldman doing a Rambo voice? We’d tell you if we weren’t succumbing to peer pressure to become a creature of the night.

    Episode 50: The Lost Boys

    '80s Vamps #1

For this October's theme, Leah and Bri are covering some 1980's vampire classics! We had to start with The Lost Boys (1987, dir. Joel Schumacher), one of Bri's favorite movies of all time. Join us as we discuss the film that basically invented the teen vampire genre. This episode is marked explicit for a few f-bombs, as usual.

The Lost Boys (1987) - REVIEW

The Lost Boys (1987) - REVIEW

Episode 14 - Sometimes a movie comes along and defines a generation, The Lost Boys could be just that movie. Released in 1987 this movie broke the mould of more traditional vampire films. With a great ensemble cast led by Kiefer Sutherland, he is joined by Corey Haim, Corey Feldman, Jamie Gertz, and Dianne Weist for a fun and often scary vampire romp.
The Lost Boys grossed over $32 million on its release against a budget of $8.5 million and grew to become a cult classic that is loved by many around the world still today.
The boys give the BTW treatment to The Lost Boys and answer some of the big questions like:
    1. Are the Vampires realistic enough for Gow?
    2. Why did Jason Patric make Speed 2?
    3. Did Dan forget to write a Stan Bush Kick Arse Song?

This was a fun episode about a movie that just exploded when we were growing up. The soundtrack is second to none with Australia's own INXS featuring heavily.

Wir sprechen über Freundschaft, Verlust, Gewalt, Abenteuer und Verletzlichkeit unter Jungs.
