But I'm A Cheerleader (1999): "Girlie Pop Behavior"

But I'm A Cheerleader (1999): "Girlie Pop Behavior"

It's still May for a few more hours, but Pride Month starts *now* at Spooky Tuesday. We just couldn't wait — and with a new Fifth Tuesday giving us the chance to cover any movie across all genres, we knew we had to do But I'm A Cheerleader (1999). An instant queer classic, this candy-colored flick is packed full of heart, silliness, and undeniable chemistry between Natasha Lyonne and Clea DuVall.  Whether you first watched it as a preteen without parental supervision or only saw it after MUNA and Phoebe Bridgers dropped their "Silk Chiffon" music video, it's pretty much consensus that Jamie Babbit's satirical rom-com is required viewing — and if you somehow still haven't seen it, well, we would be honored to make the introduction.

Nida Manzoor on 'Slums of Beverly Hills'

Nida Manzoor on 'Slums of Beverly Hills'

Balancing the dark and the light sides of coming of age, womanhood, and navigating the social order is something filmmaker Nida Manzoor always strives for in her projects (like WE ARE LADY PARTS and POLITE SOCIETY, in theaters now). And she wants to shout one of her biggest inspirations from the rooftops: SLUMS OF BEVERLY HILLS (1998, Tamara Jenkins), which centers on high-schooler Vivian Abromowitz, as played by a young Natasha Lyonne.

YNFA 041: American Pie, or Stifler’s Mom Has Got It Going On

Clean off your flute and stop looking at that warm apple pastry like that as we dive… head first? (ugh, we hate ourselves)… into 1999’s American Pie. Should this movie be renamed American Why, cuz we really don’t get why it spawned so many sequels (you know, besides all that money they make). Is it ok to watch teen sex romps in your 40s? Can we watch the dry, smart, funny movie Natasha Lyonne and Jennifer Coolidge are performing in? Eugene Levy can join as the best movie dad ever. And can someone call SVU stat to report these pervs committing an actual sex crime against Shannon Elizabeth’s unsuspecting foreign exchange student? Like a stereotypical teen boy, we can’t promise you many satisfying answers, but we can promise you plenty of weird smells in today’s episode.

Classic Comedy Chronicles & Portraying America's Dads featuring Paul Dooley

Iconic comedic character actor Paul Dooley carved out a role as Hollywood’s go-to movie Dad while his own children were missing. Paul played dad to Julia Roberts, Mia Farrow, Toni Collette, Dennis Christopher in Breaking Away and Molly Ringwald in Sixteen Candles, all as his ex-wife was on the run with his kids.

The pandemic pause compelled Paul to chronicle his story in the new book, Movie Dad: Finding Myself and My Family, On Screen and Off. Paul joins us to share his casting secrets, his encyclopedic joke memory, his improv inspirations, his clowning history and his journey from small town West Virginia, to Greenwich Village to Broadway, to Hollywood and a proud place in movie dad history.

Paul has stories about Mike Nichols, Neil Simon, Carol Burnett, Don Knotts, Alan Alda, Lin Manuel Miranda and so many more. Was Walter Matthau a scene hog? Turns out, yes!

Plus, Fritz and Weezy are recommending Poker Face on Peacock and The Bear on Hulu.

We Heart Heartstopper, The Time-Folding Charms of Russian Doll, Ozark Finishes Strong, & More May TV Musts
Andy & Diane try to tackle the onslaught of scripted content that's dropping in May 2022. We talk about why the dour darkness of OZARK is a winner, the many charms that Natasha Lyonne & Company bring to Season 2 of RUSSIAN DOLL and why Netflix's HEARTSTOPPER is a winner on so many levels. We also touch on THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT's Season 2 challenges and why THE STAIRCASE is a must-watch for us.

Another underrated 90s gem! I remember seeing this film ages ago and watching it again now was even better. Talk about a hilarious story with a great theme and an incredible cast! Me and Mikey talked about our love of Clea Duvall and Natasha Lyonne and how they are responsible for some of the most groundbreaking films of the era.

We get into the story of how Natasha was cast as Megan, the fashion and interiors that are to die for, and why Rupaul playing a  counselor is pure CAMP.

Off-topic rants include: why we're stoked for 'Nope', dream cast of a tv version, and the movie landscape of 1999.

    Graham and Megan forever!

116: Revenge of the Sequels | Cruel Intentions 2 (2000) vs. Freeway II (1999)

We waded through the murky waters of the straight to DVD rack to bring you two sequels you maybe never knew about or just plain avoided.

Me and Mikey decided that we would look at these films from a different perspective and ask ourselves, Did these need to be made, and were they really all that bad?

Spoiler alert: they sorta were but we had fun!

But I'm A Cheerleader feat. Caroline Thompson

Caroline Thompson of the excellent movie podcast How Have You Not Seen joins us to discuss 'But I'm A Cheerleader' starring Natasha Lyonne & Clea DuVall. We talk the film's evolution from critically maligned coming-of-age comedy to Queer Canon Classic™, its sly anti-capitalist undertones, and the brilliant effect of comically satirizing one of the least funny places imaginable.

    Money. Success. Fame. Glamour.

We're back in the NY club scene about a decade later with the Party Monster story. While we mostly stay on the film track we get detailed about the many documentaries about the true story that more than inspired this tale. There are so many fashion standouts that could be its own episode. The portrayal of Michael Alig and James St. James by Macaulay Culkin and Seth Green deserves all the awards. Me, Charles, and Mikey talk this INSANE story, the uncomfortable accuracies, and question just how the fuck this all happened.

Off-topic rants include: TV shows we're obsessing on, newish Brokeback Mountain news, and tales about Mikey's dog Boss.

"Now it's all about photo placement. So if you're in a group of three always, always, always make sure that you're the one standing on the right because that way when they print the picture you'll be the one on the left. The caption will read "James St. James and bla bla bla" were seen, okay?"

It's another wild ride with a dark comedy about dysfunctional families. This one happens to be a sleeper with an incredible cast that delivers throughout. I'm in love with Viv who is the living the embodiment of Daria Morgendorffer. Me and Mikey talk our favorite scenes, fashion moments, and why we never wanted this film to end.

Off topic rants include: Target, the Britney Spears 'Chaotic' series, and talking shit on former school mean girls.
