Mastering Productivity and Habits with Francis Nayan

    A QUICK NOTE:
Welcome to the podcast formerly known as Health and Hustle, briefly flirted with Living Consciouslie (but someone else consciously made a quicker trek to the trademark office - no joke, beat me by a day) and is now proudly called "Inspired with Nika Lawrie"! Why the name changes, you ask? Because even podcasts go through identity crises and need a little soul-searching. I’m keeping the old audio as a tribute to the 'awkward teenage years' in the entrepreneurial journey. Buckle up for a trip down memory lane and thanks for tuning in to my ever-evolving adventure!

For this episode, on the Creative Type Podcast, Jaime and Lori talk about habits in their art businesses and where they can improve them. Habits such as painting daily and record keeping at least monthly to help keep your artistic mojo going and make the most of your art business.

CALL FOR IDEAS FROM LISTENERS: Lori and Jaime are planning a fun episode of chatting about movies or books that contain artists. We both love to watch a movie or read a book that has an artist as the main character or at least a close side kick. EP | 12: Habit Stacking: How to Habit Stack Into Your Future Self

EP | 12: Habit Stacking: How to Habit Stack Into Your Future Self

You can habit stack your way to your future self. As the year 2022 comes to an end, you can start planning on who you want to be in the future. What is your future self thinking? What is your future self doing? Start creating a new lifestyle with small and simple habits.

Combine two to three habits together to habit stack. For example, if you want to drink more water, and wake up earlier but have formed the habit of hitting snooze, place a glass of water next to your bed and take a sip as soon as you hear your alarm clock go off. This way, your brain is waking up with the rest of your body, and you will be more alert and not hit snooze. You can also create the habit of setting a new bedtime. This way, you won't feel as tired in the morning. And the more water you drink, the more energy you will have throughout the day.

So you are stacking habits on top of each other to create lifestyle changes.

An important component though is to evaluate your habits. If you set a goal for yourself for this week of drinking 8 glasses of water per day, evaluate whether or not you reached that goal. At the end of everyday, ask yourself if you met the 8 glass goal, or did you fall short? Did you drink 10 glasses? What worked? What didn't work? What is something you could change for tomorrow in order to achieve the goal?

Who do you want to become in 2023?

What goals do you want to achieve?

The Importance of Having a Positive Mindset to Create New Habits

Creating habits helps us reach our goals and make improvements in our daily lives. However, some people find it hard to create a new habit and it is even harder to stick to it. They become discouraged before even starting and eventually, they give up. This is because we sometimes think about the setbacks and we lack a positive mindset when we create these habits.

In this episode, I discuss the importance of having a positive mindset to create new habits. I share here some tips that I also personally use to stay positive and motivated in my life.

    Habits

    Habits

Let’s define habits. Habits are the small decisions you make and actions you perform every day. According to researchers at Duke University, habits account for about 40 percent of our behaviors on any given day.

What you repeatedly do (i.e. what you spend time thinking about and doing each day) ultimately forms the person you are, the things you believe, and the personality that you portray.

Today we’re going to talk about breaking bad habits and developing new habits.

But the main thing I want you to remember is that you keep it small AND focus on progress not perfection.

I think the thing that keeps people from change is that they focus too much on perfection and one little slip up makes them just quit rather than learn from the slip up and keep moving forward.

    Breaking bad habits

James Clear who wrote Atomic Habits is one of my favorite habit gurus. I highly recommend his book and a lot of this info comes straight from it.

    What causes bad habits?

    stress & boredom

You don't eliminate a bad habit, you replace it.

How to replace a bad habits

    step 1 AWARENESS

Choose a substitute for your bad habit.

Cut out as many triggers as possible.

    Join forces with somebody.

Surround yourself with people who live the way you want to live.

    Visualize yourself succeeding.

Use the word “but” to overcome negative self–talk.

    Plan for failure.

How to build a new habit

    start very small

make it so easy you can’t say no

increase your habit in very small ways

break habit up into smaller chunks

when you slip, get back on track quickly

be patient and stick with a  pace you can sustain

    HOW TO MAKE THEM STICK

    cue

    craving

    response

    reward

the cue triggers a craving, which motivates a response, which provides a reward, which satisfies the craving and, ultimately, becomes associated with the cue.

All behavior is driven by the desire to solve a problem.

    Examples

    CUE

your phone buzzes with a new text message

    CRAVING

you want to laern the contents of hte message

    RESPONSE

you grab your phone to read the text

    REWARD

you satisfy the craving to read the message. Grabbing your phone becomes associated with your phone buzzing

    CUE

    you are answering emails

    CRAVING

you begin to feel overwhelmed by work. you want to feel in control.

    RESPONSE

    you bite your nails

    REWARD

you satisfy your craving to reduce stress. biting your nails becomes associated with answering emails

    CUE

you hit a stumbling block on a project

    CRAVING

you feel stuck and want to relieve your frustration

    RESPONSE

you pull out your phone and check social media

    RESWARD

you satisfy your craving to relieve frustration. checking social media is now associated with feeling stuck with work

    Healthy Habits

    Healthy Habits

Ice cream? Um, yes please! We both have a major sweet tooth, can get wrapped up in what we are doing and forget to eat a meal, or skip out on sleep, and we have had to learn to make sure we take care of ourselves to avoid burnout.

It is so important to make sure you are taking care of you. As entrepreneurs, if our health suffers, it affects our business. We are not nutrition or health experts, but this week we open up about our own habits and discuss our personal struggles when it comes to creating habits to take care of your overall physical and mental health.

    Eating Habits

As two ladies with a sweet tooth we have learned we cannot have sweets in our homes. If it is there, it will be hunted out and devoured! But that is only one of the adjustments we have learned to make in our lives to make sure we have our best eating habits.

Shaunae has begun meal prepping on Sundays to make it easier for her to eat the regular three meals a day and two snacks. Alarms on her phone have also helped her to make sure she is eating when she needs to and not getting caught up in her work and skipping out. She has also found healthier alternatives like LaCroix water to replace diet soda.

Sarah has cut out soda all together after feeling like it was making her sick when she was younger. She also has limited the amount of processed foods she consumes.

    Get Moving!

We have mentioned our love of Pure Barre before, and in this episode we share why it works for us. Shaunae loves that it gets her out of her home when it is also where she eats, sleeps and works. It is also a workout that is low impact but high intensity. For Sarah it is all about the accountability structure!

But when it comes to moving, it is really fining what works for you - yoga, dance, running, hitting the gym, and even a new drum exercise or aerial silks! Maybe it is even taking a walk around your neighborhood. Find what excites you to get moving!

    Sleep

We love sleep, but it is something so easy to skip out on when the work is piling up. Every person is a little different, but ideally we should obtain 6-8 hours of sleep per night. To prepare for a restful night we share our nighttime routines, from getting in to bed to leaving the devices alone.

    Love Your Tribe

Who you surround yourself with is important. They can affect not only your mood, but how you live your life. Shaunae mentions a quote that mentions we obtain the attributes of the five people we are closest with. If the people you surround yourself with have the same mindset as you, you are more likely to achieve your goal that much faster.

    Announcement!

We have a new Facebook group! This group is a space for you, the creative business owner, to share ideas, dreams, fears, and hopes, as well as to allow us to interact with you! We want to get to know you and about the legacy you are looking to build.
