Interview: Curt Pires - New America #1--debuts August 23

    1. To start, New America is a political thriller, would you say it’s a response to any specific moment in American history?
    2. You’ve crafted New America with artist Luca Casalanguida. How long has the project been in the works?
    3. Given the political underbelly of New America, do you hope the series could enact change in the real world?
    4. There’s a lot of passion on the page, particularly a scene with a burning of something, when writing the first draft for this did you have to scale back your own passion, or lean into it?
    5. It’s hard to shock me, but I honestly was taken aback by some of the violence. You see holes in people. What went into the choice to make the violence graphic?
    6. Set in the future, how futuristic does New America get?
    7. New America ends up on news channels come its release August 23, what’s your response? Do you go on the 24 hour news talk shows?
    8. Curt you’re a busy guy, do you have other projects you’d like to talk about today?

Segment: Interview with Si Spurrier and Aaron Campbell about Suicide Squad: Blaze #3

    • Si and Aaron, you've done horror before with Hellblazer, how is the horror different or the same in Suicide Squad Blaze?
    • In a story where Superman can die, is there any hope at all?
    • Something I found truly horrific aside from the monster or the talking shark, but the human faces of fear and grit. Aaron where do you find inspiration in these facial expressions?
    • Suicide Squad Blaze #2 goes hard killing a lot of heroes. Is it freeing knowing you can kill DC darlings?
    • With so many heroes dead, what should readers expect in issue 3 before foc this Sunday?
    • Now that we have two issues behind us so there's less chance to spoil, Aaron what has been the most fun to draw?
    • Does having more space to draw and write changed how you think about this story? Visually captions play in the dark well, for instance.
    • One of our main characters, Mike is codependent on another member of the team, Tanya, how does a character recover from being such an ass?
    • I’m fascinated by the use of color in the series, Jordie Bellaire colors this series but I was curious if you had thoughts on what the color story was going for?
    • A core dynamic of the team in SS: Blaze is how a bunch of total rookies are given abilities, if given the same abilities how would you respond?
    • Aaron, Si you're clearly working on all cylinders together, might you team up again soon?

Talks! Episode 56 - GGH Goes to the Movies! with John Amplas

This week, GGH ventures into new territory with the first, non-music and non-Carolinas related episode! We'll call this one, Gabba Gabba Huh? Goes to the Movies, and it features John Amplas, from such movies as Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Creepshow, and as the titular star of George Romero's Martin! We talk about everything from how he got into acting, to how he came to work with George Romero, his  thirty six years of teaching, and the wonderful world of fans and conventions.  Also along to help with the interview is my friend Jessica, who introduced me to John recently! This is a really great episode, and there will be more like it in the future.

Episode 139: 'After Blue'/'The Sadness' with Not Your Final Girl

Episode 139: 'After Blue'/'The Sadness' with Not Your Final Girl

This week I am joined by Ariel and Candace from the Not Your Final Girl podcast. We talk about two movies that seem to be nothing alike but still have a lot in common. 'After Blue' is a surreal science fiction western that has a unique look, great soundtrack, and a character named Kate Bush. 'The Sadness' is an homage to Hong Kong Category III movies. It sounds like a zombie movie that is also taking on the pandemic. While it never reaches deep levels of commentary it is an extreme horror movie that will stay with you. But is that a good thing?

It is already the spooky time of year and we talk about what plans we have for October. Can you believe one of the horror hosts has never been to a haunted house? Is it possible that one of them does not treat Halloween any different from any other time of the year? And what is WWE's Undertaker doing that has us all excited?

After Blue (Dirty Paradise) is one of the most unique looking movies of the year. The story is about a girl named Toxic who frees a woman named Kate Bush. This leads to a quest that pushes the boundaries of imagination. We talk about paintings on the sides of vans, designer guns, and the movies treatment of sex.

*WARNING! THE SADNESS DEALS WITH SEXUAL VIOLENCE*

The Sadness is one of the wildest movies we have ever talked about on this show. The film is an absolute gorefest filled with sexual violence, graphic killings, and no plot. In other words, it is a textbook extreme horror movie. We discuss its plot and characters, its frank handling of violence, and its place in today's pandemic world.

    Creepshow

    Creepshow
Hope you brought a flashlight and ironclad will because things are about to get...spooky. This October, we'll be spending time with the wide-ranging spectrum of horror cinema, from the lightly-accented to the outright terrifying. Our first entry has us visiting the welcome 1982 collaboration between horror icons George Romero and Stephen King, Creepshow! But first, this week's Blue Plate Special finds us mourning the loss of independent film legend Melvin Van Peebles, questioning the announcement of a partnership between the Roald Dahl estate and Netflix, and finding delight in the Criterion Collection home video release of Deep Cover. Upon reaching the old dark house at the end of the abandoned driveway, we delve into the delights and pitfalls of the anthology horror genre, rank the various segments both ahead of time and throughout the movie, and in general have fun with the goofy and almost bygone chills such an enterprise works to inspire. Feel free to skip to 1:35:56 for the beginning of our audio commentary. Adrienne Barbeau began her career in 1963 with the San Jose Civic Light Opera. After graduating high school, she traveled with a musical comedy revue, entertaining our servicemen on Army bases throughout Southeast Asia. In 1965, she moved to New York where she made her Broadway debut as Tevye’s second daughter, Hodel, in Fiddler on the Roof. A Tony nomination and a Theatre World Award for her creation of Rizzo in the original Broadway production of Grease led her back to California and the role of Bea Arthur’s daughter, Carol, in the hit series Maude.  Since then she has become a best selling author, a recording artist, and the star of numerous features, films for television, concert performances, musicals and plays. Movie fans know her best for her performances in The Fog, Escape From New York, Creepshow, Swamp Thing, Back to School, and Cannonball Run. She appeared in the Academy Award winning ARGO.  Recently released are the golf comedy The Eagle and the Albatross with Dan Lauria and K-Pop star Amber Liu, and the ecological horror film Unearth, starring Marc Blucas. Her recent television appearances include Criminal Minds, Grey’s Anatomy, the Netflix  series A.J. and the Queen, starring RuPaul, and American Horror Story. Having starred in over 25 theatrical productions in the U.S. and Canada, Adrienne spent most of 2015 playing Berthe, Pippin’s grandmother, in the National Tour of Pippin, singing “No Time At All” as she hung upside down from a trapeze. Off camera, Adrienne is the voice of Catwoman in Batman, The Animated Series, Ms. Simone in Scooby-Do on Zombie Island, and Scooter’s Mom in the 3-D animated film Fly Me To The Moon. She can be heard in a myriad of video games: God of War, Halo 4, and Fallout 76 among them. She also provides video description for the visually impaired on many films, documentaries, and television series; it’s one of her favorite forms of voiceover work.
