Day 318: The Narrow Gate, the Lost Sheep, and the Prodigal Son (2023)
Fr. Mike confronts the hard truth Jesus preaches in today's readings: Many people will ultimately choose hell over heaven. While this can be deeply distressing, Fr. Mike reminds us to focus on Jesus's directive to each one of us: "[You] Strive to enter through the narrow gate." In the second part of today's commentary, Fr. Mike reflects on two of Jesus' most well-known parables: the parable of the Lost Sheep and the parable of the Prodigal Son. Today's readings are Luke 13-16 and Proverbs 26:10-12. Vows, Precepts, Refuge

While I am taking a bit of a break from teaching and offering Dharma Talks, I'll be posting a series of talks I offered in 2018 and 2019 connected to The Open Source tradition's Ceremony of Taking Refuge in the Bodhisattva Way (the complete liturgy for the ceremony can be found here). When people intend to participate in this ceremony, we undergo a period of study of the vows and precepts, taking up and exploring them one-by-one. This first talk speaks to the overall spirit of taking refuge, whereas the talks to come will focus more on individual vows and precepts.

    The Damned

    The Damned

This episode I explore my thoughts about those of us considered to be on the margin of society.

I read from Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” to add the listener in comprehending the mental health of those who believe they themselves are condemned to suffer; to live a life on the margin because they are excluded from normal society as they are deemed by society as abnormal.

Being a drug addict and a victim of rape as a child this is how I feel.  I feel like I was marginalized when I became a victim of sex abuse by the teacher.  I give you my perspective and a little taste of my college education to explain further about political and social escapism: out of sight, out of mind.

    J. Warner Wallace - Christianity Under Investigation

    J. Warner Wallace - Christianity Under Investigation

On the 38th episode of All Heart with Paul Cardall, former atheist and cold case expert Jay Warner Wallace shares his experience as a homicide detective investigating the evidence for Jesus of Nazareth outside of the Bible and inside the text of the Bible. Jim, a popular Christian who uses forensic apologetics believes there are many different versions of the victim (Jesus). He explains how he was able to use his expertise to unveil the true Jesus reported in the Bible and historians. Using a term he coined as "cold case christianity" Jim discusses how to get results long after witnesses are gone. Having a large Mormon family, Jim began investigating Mormonism as part of his journey from being an atheist to a believing Christian who would later have a christian worldview. Using his experience he discovered Mormon founder Joseph Smith was not a prophet and The Book of Mormon does not meet the forensic test of truth. All Heart host Paul, a former Mormon, also with a Christian worldview shares his personal insight into learning the differences in the doctrine of grace. Jay reveals why the doctrine of grace is important in knowing the victim that was crucified and said to come back to life. Jesus spent 40 days with disciples teaching them the doctrine they needed to know to establish the Lord's church.

GUEST: J. Warner Wallace, Homicide Detective, Christian Apologist HOST:

Paul Cardall, Dove Award Winning Musician / Producer

    J. WARNER WALLACE

    J. Warner Wallace is a Dateline featured cold-case homicide detective, popular national speaker and best-selling author. He continues to consult on cold-case investigations while serving as a Senior Fellow at the Colson Center for Christian Worldview. He is also an adjunct professor of apologetics at Talbot School of Theology (Biola University) and Southern Evangelical Seminary, and a faculty member at Summit Ministries. J. Warner became a Christ-follower at the age of thirty-five after investigating the claims of the New Testament gospels using his skill set as a detective. He eventually earned a Master’s Degree in Theological Studies from Gateway Seminary. J. Warner’s professional investigative work has received national recognition; his cases have been featured more than any other detective on NBC’s Dateline, and his work has also appeared on CourtTV and Fox News. J. Warner’s book, Cold-Case Christianity, provides readers with ten principles of cold case investigations and utilizes these principles to examine the reliability of the gospel eyewitness accounts. In God’s Crime Scene, he investigates eight pieces of evidence in the universe to make the case for God’s existence.

Kathryn Mannix: How to Die Well

Kathryn Mannix: How to Die Well

Does talking about death freak you out? No wonder, it's something many of us avoid thinking about and prefer pretending it's not there. But it's an important topic, and if we can allow ourselves to sit with the truth that life will eventually end, it becomes a beautiful call to appreciate our lives and the people in them.

And this is why palliative care physician Kathryn Mannix wrote her book, With the End in Mind: Dying, Death, and Wisdom in an Age of Denial https://www.blinkist.com/en/nc/browse/books/with-the-end-in-mind-en. Having witnessed death many thousands of times, Kathryn has come to a view that there's usually little to fear and much to prepare for.

In this episode, Kathryn will help you understand what the human organism goes through as death approaches so that you can be less afraid of the process itself. She'll share how to prepare for the end of your life—both practically and mentally—as well as what you can do if you find yourself on the other side, supporting a loved one approaching the end of theirs.

    Books recommended by Kathryn:

    - Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End, by Atul Gawande

    - Waiting for the Last Bus: Reflections on Life and Death, by Richard Holloway

Books recommended by Caitlin and Ben:

    - Spoiler Alert: You're Gonna Die, by Korttany Finn and Jacquie Purcell

    - When Breath Becomes Air, by Paul Kalanithi

    - On Death and Dying, by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross

50 - Sarah Jones (For All Mankind)

50 - Sarah Jones (For All Mankind)

Actress Sarah Jones talks with Jenny Curtis about her role in the series ‘For All Mankind’.  She talks about the history of her performance career which started in dance before she successfully turned to acting with key roles in ensemble casts like Big Love.  Her mission to pursue dynamic female roles prevented her from initially agreeing to play Tracy in ‘For All Mankind.’ This changed however following persuasion from show creator, Ron Moore. From there it was about developing the to maximize its trajectory, just as she had done with other roles she had played in shows like The Path and Damnation. Deeply grateful for a career in storytelling, she aims to draw upon the artistic process to connect with the characters she plays. If audiences can then appreciate her work, she considers this “icing on the cake.”
