Episode 123: Name the Mouse in the Room with David Wood

Episode 123: Name the Mouse in the Room with David Wood

Episode 123 of the podcast is back with David Wood, a previous guest on episode 84 of the show. With over 20 years of experience as a life coach, David is also the founder of Focus.ceo

David starts off part two of his podcast with his latest book, “Mouse in the Room: Because the Elephant isn’t Alone”. The book talks about how the elephant isn’t the only animal in the room. David says there are many other more subtle animals to see that not everyone in the room may be aware of. He provides a recent example.

“Like, a couple of nights ago, I was at an acting class, and I suggested to someone something she could’ve done a little differently,” David said. “My story in my head is that ‘That didn’t land well,’ that she kind of felt a little bit insulted, and she did not want that feedback. And so, that’s a mouse.”

“Now, I could just let that mouse hide, or I could identify it and say, ‘Oh, okay,’ and reach out (and I probably will today) and leave a message and say, ‘Hey, I just got the feeling that didn’t land well and that wasn’t what you wanted to hear, and I wanted to apologize.’”

David stresses the importance of identifying the mouse in the room in the first place. That’s part of why he named the book what he did, to center the problem in the room that many people are too scared to confront or name otherwise.

“It’s about authenticity,” David said. “It’s about stopping the act that we’re always presenting to the world, because we don’t want to get in trouble or feel uncomfortable, and finding artful ways to name your mice so that you can be seen for who you are and generate more connection, confidence and be a better leader.”

Naming the mouse in the room also generates more trust, according to David. Being real (or honest) in a situation can get you farther than pretending that the problem doesn’t exist in the room in the first place. It’s also the point of good leadership.

“It works for leadership as well. If you’re not willing to be revealed and give people a sense of who you are and what’s driving you, and why you care about this and actually name what’s happening, who’s going to trust that?” David said. “They’re not going to want to follow you. So, there’s business application. If money’s a driver for you, I think you’ll make more money.”

How to Have Tough Conversations (Ep 17)

How to Have Tough Conversations (Ep 17)

Jon and Bryan have a thoughtful conversation about how to have tough conversations better. They hit on the following topics:

    - The uncertainty of how Japan and the US are opening up, and the decision-making that goes into it
    - The difficult conversations everyone is having in the wake of George Floyd's murder
    - Younger people trying to find their voice and know how to use it
    - Asking the question: is what I'm going to say going to get me closer to the outcome I want to achieve?
    - Why charged emotions make it harder to get to the real issue, which is having a productive conversation
    - The first goal of every conversation is to establish a strong relationship, which requires finding common ground
    - Pacing and leading is an effective strategy; it starts with meeting someone where they are willing to meet you, on common ground. From there, you can lead them closer to your opinion.
    - For topical issues, the common ground is often the core truth that you can both agree on
    - Pacing involves many other strategies, including mirroring body language, word usage and intonation, as well as paraphrasing their opinions
    - The best time to practice pacing and leading is in everyday, low risk conversations
    - Why pacing and leading can actually make you feel more thoughtful and present in your conversation
    - Knowing these strategies can help you navigate when other people use them on you
    - David Wood's C.A.R.E. Model is a proven technique for preparing for and executing tough conversations

GENERAL MEDICINE: Sunday, September 2nd - European Society of Cardiology Congress, 2007, 1-5 September, Vienna, Austria
Sunday, September 2nd - European Society of Cardiology Congress, 2007, 1-5 September, Vienna, Austria 1. Blood Pressure Drugs Reduce Mortality in Patients with Diabetes: The ADVANCE Study REFERENCE: Abstract 312 Hot Line 1 Sunday STEPHEN MACMAHON, The George Institute, University of Sydney COMMENT: RAYMOND GIBBONS, Mayo Clinic, Rochester MN The randomised placebo controlled ADVANCE study of 11000 patients with diabetes has demonstrated that a combination of the ACE inhibitor, perindopril, with the diuretic indapamide can lower blood pressure and mortality. The investigators saw an impact even in patients who did not have high blood pressure. Lead study author Stephen MacMahon said this approach should be included in current practise guidelines. Sarah Maxwell spoke with him at the meeting in Vienna. Commented on Stephen McMahon's presentation of the ADVANCE study looking at the use of perindopril plus indapamide among patients with diabetes: a study with 11 000 patients divided between active and placebo in which a 14 per cent improvement in all-cause mortality, an 18 per cent reduction of cardiovascular deaths, was achieved together with reductions of the incidence of both renal and coronary disease. 2. Lifestyle and Heart Disease in Europe: A Growing Problem REFERENCE: Abstract 316 DAVID WOOD, Charing Cross Hospital, London Among 8000 coronary patients in 9 European countries, smoking prevalence hasn’t changed over the last 12 years, and obesity is going up – that’s according to the combined EUROASPIRE surveys, which were presented at the ESC congress. Derek Thorne got more from David Wood, of Charing Cross Hospital in London. 3. Drug Eluting Stents, Bare Metal Stents: No Survival Difference REFERENCE: Hot Line 1 Sunday 11:00 2 Sept/ESC Congress 2007 Vienna 1-5 September STEFAN JAMES, Uppsala Clinical Research Centre, Sweden COMMENT: RAYMOND GIBBONS, Mayo Clinic, Rochester MN Another year’s results of the long term outcome of using drug-eluting stents as compared with bare-metal stents from Sweden reveal that there is no longer an increased risk of late mortality when using drug-eluting stents according to Stefan James of Uppsala Clinical Research Centre. He suggested that improvements in technique have helped reduce the risk of death or myocardial infarction associated with using drug-eluting stents nevertheless the risk of blood clots still remains. Overall survival of patients was found to be the similar for both categories of stent.
