Baby Velvet skips the baby steps and goes it alone

Baby Velvet skips the baby steps and goes it alone

Musicians start solo. This would be true of every budding artist that picks up the stick, a pick or places their fingers on a keyboard. From learning their craft, to finding their voice, the pursuit of creating music yourself and broadcasting it to the world is a visceral and emotional outlet.

Our next guest has travelled the world, had her music in the top 10 of the charts and met fans and artists from around the world, but has never released a solo debut album, until now.

Baby Velvet, aka Hannah Crofts, has delivered an album to our ears that will make you melt, make you think, all the while flowing through your body with warm and rich tones.

Please Don’t Be In Love With Someone Else’ is the name of the record and we were stoked to chat to Baby Velvet on the Tuckshop!

Eliza & The Delusionals mess with space and time

Eliza & The Delusionals mess with space and time

From the first strains of Eliza & The Delusionals debut album – Now and Then – you’ll have a smile on your face. The glistening guitar is from another time and the vocal of lead singer, Eliza Klatt rises above the power pop like a beacon of hope.

Together with Kurt Skuse and an international mix of talent, the group have created something that feels like a perfect representation of love, life and the pieces in between.

Now and Then brings Eliza & The Delusionals to the present and its a world that we want to live in.

Annie Hamilton takes us through the portal to the past

Annie Hamilton takes us through the portal to the past

Annie Hamilton is a long-time friend of the station and a favourite of the Sydney music scene. Since going solo, after being a part of the trio that was Little May, we’ve watched as she’s steadily and surely built up a devoted fanbase, drawn to her incredible voice and powerful, instinctive songs.

Now, Annie Hamilton has arrived with her debut album – the future is here but it feels kinda like the past and it’s a gorgeous journey of an album, traversing mystical territories and parallel realities, but in the hands of Annie’s expert songwriting, there’s no place you wouldn’t travel with her.

Uncovering The Boy within Harvey Sutherland

Uncovering The Boy within Harvey Sutherland

He has described himself as a disco minimalist. An artist that can create a vibe, a groove, a beat from what sounds like the smallest of sounds. Of course, he can also blow you away with bombastic synths and dynamic melodies. Harvey Sutherland has a way of taking you on a journey with every song.

Harvey (or Mike Katz to his friends) has been on the electronic music scene for over a decade, but the artist has not yet released a full-length album – until now. On Friday, Boy was released and it’s an album full of luscious layers of synths, Motorik beats, funky-ass bass and the occasional surprise vocal!

He joined Mick & Jules for a chat on the eve of his album release!

The Lazy Eyes complete their first chapter

The Lazy Eyes complete their first chapter

Sometimes the greatest part of being an Australian music fan is watching the progression of artists from their first tentative steps into the industry to fully-fledged musicians being listened to worldwide.

The Lazy Eyes are a band that have been plying their trade, slowly but surely over the last 5-6 years and this has culminated in their debut album, Songbook, released on Thursday, and surely an album that will see them explode.

It’s a big, bold and exciting record, combining the sounds of the Beatles-esque ‘60’s, psych-rock ‘70s,  and a little micro-tonal King Gizz influence on the side.

The Tuckshop welcomed Harvey and Itay to the show!

#212 Suz Slezak "Our Wings May Be Featherless"

#212 Suz Slezak "Our Wings May Be Featherless"

Today I welcome Suz Slezak, mother and musician, to the show. For Suz harmonizing with another human being is a sacred act of sharing breath. This lifelong love of harmony is how she, as if by accident, fell into music as a career. Suz grew up TV-free on her family’s Virginia homestead, in an endless loop of fiddle-playing and singing led by her father, a Catholic seminary dropout, as she, her brothers and a gaggle of fellow homeschoolers traversed gravel roads in their beat-up station wagon en route to choir rehearsals and music lessons.

While not on a path to pursue music, it seemed to be following her. Convinced by her now-husband to join his band, the two eventually fell in love and for the past fifteen years have co-fronted David Wax Museum - earning accolades from the New York Times to NPR, performing on CBS Saturday Morning, and even playing Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg’s wedding.

After years touring and co-fronting the band, Suz’s debut solo album, Our Wings May Be Featherless, comes out March 4th. It is a breathtaking journey through some of her life’s most painful and poignant moments - losing a best friend to suicide, her public struggle with bipolar disorder, and a traumatic childbirth. Today we listen to a few of the new songs and hear about the stories behind them.

Thanks to Ian Seda from Radio Kingston for engineering today’s show!

Our show music is from Shana Falana !!!

The Predators Emerge From The Wilderness

The Predators Emerge From The Wilderness

The Predators have been lurking. The trio of Steven Bishop, Ian Haug and John Collins – friends since school, have always had the idea of creating a debut album – and 16 years after forming the group, which was the original core of Powderfinger, they have released their debut album, Everybody Loves.

It’s a powerful exploration through retro post-punk sounds, with a healthy dose of classic Australian rock influence thrown in and stands as a worthy milestone for three musicians that have explored many genres (and jobs!) throughout their careers.

The Tuckshop caught up with with Ian Haug and Steve Bishop as J.C. set up their gear in the background for their rehearsal!

The Legacy from Birdz is only just beginning

The Legacy from Birdz is only just beginning

Artists enter into music for many reasons. It may be an escape, an outlet of creativity or to communicate important messages. For Birdz, it feels like all three are relevant as he delivers his ground-breaking second album, Legacy.

As the title suggests, this album of ten powerful and ultimately bop-worthy tracks, establish a line of communication from Birdz to the wider community. There are themes of identity and self-determination, but also tracks that seek to educate and reveal some of Birdz’s personal story and heritage.

The Tuckshop was very excited to not only talk to an artist that is on the rise, but someone who will always have the esteemed position of being the first artist ever played on The Tuckshop!

Gretta Ray on How She Converted Pain to Pop

Gretta Ray on How She Converted Pain to Pop

Great pop music is all about capturing moments. From Carole King to Joni Mitchell to Taylor Swift, great pop songwriters can make the most intimate moment feel completely universal.

On Gretta Ray’s debut album Begin To Look Around, she does just that. Exploring pain and heartbreak and hope and laughter, the album can sometimes feel like it’s echoing thoughts in your own head - like all great albums should do.

It’s an incredible debut record and statement from Gretta, and she joined Mick & Jules on The Tuckshop to chat through how it all came together!

Sampology – A Regrowth Through Sound

Sampology – A Regrowth Through Sound

With the arrival of Spring also comes a sense of renewal, hope and warmth. It seems fitting then that it also signals the arrival of the debut album from Meanjin (Brisbane) DJ, producer and artist, Sampology. His ambitious album, filled with a plethora of self-record samples, all combine to make a lush, layered and stunning record.

Regrowth is the result of years of recording and production, but helped by family, friends and a host of talented musicians, Sam Poggioli has turned a smorgasbord of complex sound into a slick and comforting portion of music that feels suitable no matter the season.

He joined Jules and Mick on The Tuckshop to pull apart the creation of the record, what his hometown means to him and why family has been so integral to the making of his first record.

Cannon fire back with a rocking debut that hits all the right notes

The album is a mix of raspy guitar hooks, driving bass and realised rock that harks back to a simpler time. With members of the band all contributors to other projects, they return as a ‘supergroup’ but lead singer and guitarist, Mitch McIvor joined The Tuckshop for a dive into the past, present and future of the band.
