HollyAnne Knight - Quilting Circle Gone Viral

HollyAnne Knight - Quilting Circle Gone Viral

When HollyAnne was caring for her babies and in the throes of post-partum depression, quilting was what she did to “feed her soul,” and her online quilting community was her soft place to land. Once she discovered modern and modern-traditional quilting, she quickly fell down the rabbit hole, and upon watching a free motion quilting class online, her passion took on a life of its own. “Something about it really spoke to my soul. It really reminded me of the motion of brushstrokes and Impressionism and modern Impressionist paintings, which was always my favorite era of art.”

While she was building a small business selling t-shirt quilts through her Etsy shop, she continued her exploration of modern quilting, going to her first QuiltCon in 2017. It was there she witnessed free-motion quilting in person. She describes her time there as magical and managed to pass out a box of business cards to start building community. The event, which she refers to as a “breath of fresh air,” was the thing that set her education company String and Story into motion. As a result of her passion, commitment and love of teaching, the community quickly attracted an international following. (3:46 -10:35)

HollyAnne soon created a blog on Instagram followed by Quilting Rock Stars, a String & Story community on Facebook, which attracts people from around the world. “What started as my little feeble attempt to just have a place to talk to other people who liked quilting, turned into a real community where folks would share about stuff going on with their families, their health challenges… and it's been incredible.” She talks about the power of community, and how this virtual community has been a lifeline through some very dark times. (13:30   – 17:38)

HollyAnne views her live String & Story sessions on YouTube and her Rock Stars group as an old-time quilting circle gone viral.  It’s a place where people can pull up a chair, tell stories and be real. “I really believe that if I can be leading with love, and how I lead my community, then we can navigate all the hard things that are gonna come our way.” (13:30   – 24:54)

As she continues to share her journey with us, HollyAnne talks about making quilts for kids with cancer, the genesis of String & Story, her inspiring Rock Stars, and her new store in Duluth.  During this casual conversation, her humanity and love of quilting shine through. You won’t want to miss it! You can connect with HollyAnne at stringandstory.com, on Instagram and her Quilting Rock Stars group on Facebook.

In this episode of the Energizing America I had the privilege to sit down with Congressman Pete Stauber to discuss oil and gas in America and why there is still such great opportunity and need for the mining industry. Congressman Pete Stauber is a Duluth Minnesota native, currently serving his second term in Congress as the Representative from Minnesota’s Eighth Congressional District. Congressman Stauber believes that Northeastern Minnesota deserves strong, principled leadership in Washington, D.C. and is focused on unleashing the economic engine in the region. SWE #10 Lake Effect Collab with Dominique Jessen, Sarah White, & Sara Jumper

Join us and creators Dominique Jenssen, Sara Jumper, and Sarah White as we explore their story world, 1332 and the Lake Effect Collab!  1332 isn’t an obscure reference to the medieval times, but of the amazing depth of the largest freshwater lake in the world, Lake Superior as well as the collab’s first film project.  The group are all dancers for the Duluth Ballet, and the connection Duluthians have with the lake is deep.

    Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/3XprxudBIcI

A combination of trying to expand dance to new mediums, highlight the lake’s importance to Duluth, and to put Duluth’s thriving art scene in the limelight, the Lake Effect Collab aims to start their journey with a three-part dance film.  This film will be a collaborative effort with Duluthian artists, and they plan on expanding into an amazing summer festival where they can show the country and world what Duluth has been up to.

We spoke about paganizing the summer festival to honor the lake, dance’s uphill battle with availability, and a podcast idea connecting Duluth artists to the lake.

#62 | Emerging From The Chrysalis

In this week’s episode, Rachel shares how her recent trip to Minnesota was one of great healing. Being in a familiar space after going through so much healing and becoming this new authentic self was emotional for her.

She talks about how she lived in that space, Minnesota, for such a big part of her life as someone she thought others wanted her to be and now was able to go back as just Rachel. Just being herself allowed the grey clouds to part, the sun to nourish her, and let her see the beauty from a new lens, a new perspective.

Upon arriving home in Colorado she had a Divine experience of downloading a new “Positive Morphic Field.” Uncertain of what had happened, she reached out to Gina Giro (Episode #53) who was able to assist her in installing and activating this as well as release other emotions that do not serve her.

This is an example of what it can look like to truly level the f$&% up!!

    Beer, Barbeque, and Flavor

    Beer, Barbeque, and Flavor

This week on Beer Sessions Radio, Jimmy is getting excited for Memorial Day Weekend grilling and drinking. On the show is Paul Dlugokencky from Blind Bat Brewery in Long Island, NY; Ray Sheehan from BBQ Buddha, and Todd DiMatteo from Good Word Brewing and Public House in Duluth, Georgia.

Paul tells us about how he incorporates beer into his food program at Blind Bat Brewery, and Todd introduces us to Good Word Brewing, where he jokes that the food is almost as good as the beer. Ray then previews a couple of recipes he has coming for his new cookbook, including a mouth-watering smoked queso and beer dip.

There’s plenty of techniques when it comes to cooking with beer, and Ray walks us through how to get the best flavor for grilling, smoking, and the low-and slow-method. Sauce is also a secret weapon, and Todd has an extensive selection to pair with all his dishes. Finally, Paul tells us how smoke can enhance beer flavor, and the gang revisits Ray’s queso recipe that they can’t seem to get enough of.

Meet Emily Ford & Diggins! Hiking Wisconsin's 1200 Mile Ice Age Trail

Meet Emily Ford & Diggins! Hiking Wisconsin's 1200 Mile Ice Age Trail

Bucks County Bytes is proud to bring you Emily Ford and her companion Diggins right from Wisconsin's historic Ice Age Trail- 1200 miles of trailblazing in the middle of winter! Yes, Emily Ford and Diggins are taking on an adventure in the middle of this cold winter to conquer the famed Ice Age Trail. I was privileged to have Emily speak right after her trailblazing for the day, and you can count about 3 months of this trailblazing as she's averaging about 20 miles a day, 100-mile weeks with a 60 lbs backpack. And Diggins is packing her own too! Inspirational!! Exciting! Powerful!
Emily spoke to me as she was in her tent, getting comfortable to settle in for the night with her companion Diggins, an Alaskan Husky, who has joined her on this long journey through the middle of a Wisconsin winter.
Emily is making history, as she will be the only woman to conquer the Ice Age Trail in a winter walkthrough. Only one other individual has successfully completed this which was in 2017.
Not only is Emily paving the way for other women to seek adventure, hiking, walking, backpacking, and trailblazing, but for other black women to get outdoors and enjoy the beauty that surrounds us. Emily says what she is doing is bigger than what she ever dreamed of...making a difference in so many people's lives.
Listen in and hear Emily speak from her tent on the trail with Diggins next to her as she settles in and speaks to Bucks County Bytes of how it all began. Hear the voice. Listen to her words. She is making history...Emily and Diggins....Hiking the Ice Age Trail.

    Gaelynn Lea’s Voice and Violin

    Gaelynn Lea’s Voice and Violin

Gaelynn Lea’s voice and violin land like a balm — an offering of both clarity and gladness that can still be mustered in this midwinter, this upended Christmas season. She first came to the attention of many when she won NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Contest in 2016. This fiddler and singer-songwriter moves through the world in an electric wheelchair, and plays the violin like a cello because of the disability she was born with — a genetic condition that has made her bones more breakable. So much of what she’s learned through life in her body lands as wisdom, right now.

Gaelynn Lea -- is a violinist and singer-songwriter from Duluth, Minnesota. Her albums include All the Roads that Lead Us Home, Learning How to Stay, and most recently, The Living Room Sessions: Gaelynn Lea LIVE.
