E452 Bachelorette Recap w/ Allison Raskin

Welcome back to The Viall Files: Bachelorette Recap Edition! Today we are back with another episode, joined again today by New York Times Bestselling Author, Podcaster, and mental health advocate, Allison Raskin! On this episode we kick things off by getting the latest in Bach Nation news; talking about Nayte’s recent big move to Los Angeles and becoming roommates with Rodney, a recent paparazzi photoshoot of Tyler Cameron and Paige Lorenze in NYC, plus Nick’s worst paparazzi moments. We then dive into recapping the episode itself! We talk about how Gabby and Rachel are handling getting both devotion and rejection from the guys, how every season challenges your insecurities, and how to manage when half the guys are not there for you. We talk about how Mario blew his chance by exploring too much, how some of the guys may flip teams from one lead to the other, and how it’s a miracle Hayden is still in the game after a rough night. We also dive into Gabby breaking the mold of surface level fairytales by getting real about not having the love of her mom, and on the other hand, how some people are finding “deep” connections over the fact that their fathers would drive them to the airport.

“Getting clarity isn't the end of the world.”

Market Volatility, Airbnb, and Dan Ariely

Market Volatility, Airbnb, and Dan Ariely
The stock market falls as interest rates rise. Airbnb reports a big loss but shares rise on stronger than expected revenue. Home Depot, Lowe’s, and Square slip on growth concerns. Etsy rises on earnings. Papa John’s and Domino’s don’t. Beyond Meat makes two big deals. And Door Dash declines in its debut quarter as a public company. Motley Fool analysts Andy Cross and Ron Gross discuss those stories, weigh in on Amazon and Chewy, and share two stocks on their radar: Curiositystream and ResMed. Plus, Duke Professor of Psychology and Behavioral Economics Dan Ariely talks risk, luck, and how to navigate market declines. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

What I’ve learned, and what comes next.

What I’ve learned, and what comes next.
As strange as it is to write, this is my last podcast here at Vox. In January, I'll be starting at the New York Times as a columnist on the opinion page, doing a reported column on policy and launching an interview podcast. Meanwhile, Vox will be building something new and better atop this show's DNA in this feed. In this episode, I wanted to reflect on the almost five years I’ve spent doing this show. This project has changed my work, and my life, in unexpected ways. So here are the four lessons this show has taught me and, of course, the three books that have influenced me, and that I'd recommend to the audience.  Thank you for everything, and you can reach me at ezrakleinshow@gmail.com. #457: Leadership Lessons From the Pastor of One of America's Most Innovative Churches

#457: Leadership Lessons From the Pastor of One of America's Most Innovative Churches

I grew up in Edmond, OK, a suburb of Oklahoma City. When I was teenager back in the 90s, I started hearing about some church being run out of a garage. Didn’t give it much thought then. Fast forward more than twenty years later, and Life.Church now has over 30 campuses across 10 states, and is often ranked as the largest church in America.

Today on the show I talk to the guy who started this thing in a garage, and has stood at the helm of its tremendous growth, to glean his insights on leadership and strategy. His name is Craig Groeschel, and he’s the founder and head pastor at Life.Church. We discuss Craig's philosophy on leadership and managing the growth of a large organization, how he balances innovation with stability, how an organization can stay nimble even as it gets bigger, how you have to relinquish control in order to get growth, and why leaders need to go out of their way to show people they’re noticed and needed.

We then discuss the personal side of leadership, including how to balance work and life, how to avoid letting administrative duties kill your creativity, and how to handle criticism.

Whether you're a leader in a business or a non-profit, you’re going to find lots of actionable advice in this show.

ASK158 When will prices go up in the North East? PLUS: Am I going to get taxed twice?

ASK158 When will prices go up in the North East? PLUS: Am I going to get taxed twice?

We have another two cracking property questions this week on Ask Rob & Rob.

The first comes from PJ who wants to know about the ripple effect of northern cities. With property prices in the South East still way below their 2007 figures,  PJ wants to know when the likes of Newcastle and Middlesbrough will see any capital growth after the mid-cycle wobble.

As you know, Rob & Rob have form for accurate property predictions, so listen to Ask Rob & Rob this week to discover how they think these areas will play out. Will they see capital growth or are they not worth bothering with? Is there a trick PJ is missing out on with a location that Rob B is keeping a very close eye on?

Is growth on the horizon or is it just too early to tell? Have a listen and let us know what you think.

The second question comes from Pete who’s a fairly new listener but has been loving the property podcasts so far (thanks Pete!).

He has four investment properties in his property portfolio. He owns two outright and the other two have 50% mortgages against them - plenty of equity.

Pete is worried about the tax changes for buy to let investment property and is concerned he’ll get taxed twice if he chose to invest via a limited company.

Pete’s question isn’t an unusual one and if anything, highlights the need to have a basic understanding of tax so you can make sure you’re investing in property via a method that’s best suited to your needs.

Luckily, Rob & Rob are clued up on tax and have some general pointers for Pete, so hit the listen button to hear what they have to say.

We also have The Property Hub Tax - a dedicated team who fully understand what property investors want. Tax is complex and it’s never been more important to make sure you get the right advice. Sign up to the priority list today by clicking here.

Do you have a property question for Rob & Rob? If you’d like to feature on the next episode, give us a call on 013 808 00035 and leave a message with your name and question (normal UK call rates apply).

Or if you prefer, click here to leave a recording via your computer instead.

The next question on Ask Rob & Rob could be yours.

    I'm Right, You're Wrong

    I'm Right, You're Wrong

There are some topics about which it seems no amount of data will change people's minds: things like climate change, or restrictions on gun ownership. Neuroscientist Tali Sharot says that's actually for good reason. As a general rule, she says, it's better to stick to your beliefs and disregard new information that contradicts them. But this also means it's very difficult to change false beliefs. In this favorite episode from earlier this year, we look at how we process information, and why it's so hard to change our views.

Why politics needs more conflict, not less

Why politics needs more conflict, not less
Here’s a counterintuitive thought: maybe Congress in particular, and politics in general, has too little conflict, not too much. That’s James Wallner’s argument, and it’s more persuasive than you might think. Wallner is a political scientist who became a top Republican Senate aide, working as legislative director for Senators Jeff Sessions and Pat Toomey, as well as executive director of the Senate Steering Committee under Toomey and Lee. He’s now a senior fellow at the R Street Institute, and the author of “The Death of Deliberation: Partisanship and Polarization in the United States Senate.” Wallner is immersed in congressional history and procedure, and one of his conclusions after years of both study and experience is that the leadership in both parties are using the rules to stymie disagreement and suppress chaos — and well-intentioned though this might be, it’s making everything worse. Congress, Wallner believes, is an institution designed to surface conflict so that positions can be made clear, compromises can be tested, and a way forward can be found. That’s not happening now, and the results are disastrous. The Republican Party is particularly bad on this score, he says. “They pretend like they all agree on everything...But if you never deal with your problems, what do you think happens? A break-up! And that's literally what you're seeing right now.” The first few times I hard Wallner’s arguments, I was skeptical. In some ways, I’m still skeptical, as you’ll hear in this conversation. But I’m also convinced he’s onto something important.  Books: The Professor's House by Willa Cather Democracy and Leadership by Irving Babbitt Notes of Debates in the Federal Convention of 1787 by James Madison Learn more about your ad choices. #264: How to Coach People in Business, Sports, and Life

#264: How to Coach People in Business, Sports, and Life

Whether you’re a parent, a manager, or a mentor, we all have to coach people at some point in our life.
But how do you coach in a way that makes the recipient receptive to your feedback but doesn’t take up too much of your time and energy?
My guest today has spent his career coaching managers on how to be better leaders at work and he's distilled his knowledge on how to coach effectively in his latest book. His name is Michael Bungay Stainer and his book is The Coaching Habit. Today on the show Michael and I discuss how effective coaching requires you to talk less and ask more questions. Michael then shares the exact questions you should ask when coaching someone that will guide them to the answer they need to make their needed improvement.
