Saltburn (2023): "So Gossip Girl Coded"

Saltburn (2023): "So Gossip Girl Coded"

Is this week a Fifth Tuesday? Is Saltburn (2023) a horror movie? Spookies, those questions are more for you than for us — but we do have a lot to say this week. Like, A LOT. Somehow, without really meaning to, we accidentally talked for almost three whole hours about Emerald Fennell’s newest film (and actually, if you count the bits that we cut out, we really talked for even longer). But, hey, if you’ve heard anything at all about the 2006-era flick starring Barry Keoghan and Jacob Elordi, then you know that conversation is just one of the many things it provokes. On our latest Spooky Tuesday, we’re discussing our first impressions, the Gossip Girl of it all, and that killer soundtrack, plus so (so so) much more.

Saltburn (Holiday Special w/ Renée and Tighe)

Saltburn (Holiday Special w/ Renée and Tighe)

We made it to the end of 2023. And OH what a year it has been. Has it been as exciting and riveting as the completely unidentifiable nor unique 2000's? Probably not.

In a sudden twist, as part of our annual "Christmas Key Party" (lol jks, kinda) we wined, dined, and we seduced Tighe and Renée into watching the newly released SALTBURN, written and directed by Emerald Fennell. The real twist is that we rarely cover new movies but this is something special. Without going in to too much detail, this might be one of the best moments in any film we've uncovered on this podcast.

Seriously guys, if you haven't seen the film, watch it please. Don't ruin it for yourselves listening to us blabber on about it. You have no excuse as the movie is available on Amazon Prime as of today (December 22, 2023) so it's free to subscribers.

Expect SPOILERS AHOY in this special festive and bumper final episode of 2023! Happy Holidays and many thanks to our listeners for sticking us out this long! See you in the New Year ya filthy animals!

Promising Young Woman: when society is the villain

Promising Young Woman: when society is the villain
The writing in this film is nothing short of masterful. Among the many reasons to study it is the way it develops Society as a force of antagonism. The heroine isn't just battling men, she's up against women, societal attitudes, and institutions too.For information about Valerie's upcoming webinars, visit: www.valeriefrancis.ca/webinars For access to writing templates and worksheets, and more than 70 hours of training (all for free), subscribe to Valerie's Inner Circle: www.valeriefrancis.ca/innercircle To learn to read like a writer, visit Melanie's website: www.melaniehill.com.au Follow Valerie on X, Instagram and Threads @valerie_francis Follow Melanie on X, Instagram and Facebook @MelanieHillAuthor

Angry in a Good Way: Promising Young Woman

Angry in a Good Way: Promising Young Woman

This film's title references from the infamous Brock Turner case - the Stanford University student who raped and assaulted an unconscious female student behind a dumpster at a fraternity party. Much was made at the time of Turner's promising future as a swimmer. As his father said in a much publicized court letter, why should his son's life be "deeply altered" for "20 minutes of action"?

This film poses the question: Why are we willing to sacrifice promising young women for promising young men?
