    Revelation: When God Speaks

    Revelation: When God Speaks

Revelation is the last book in the Bible.

However, the entire Bible is a revelation from God - and so is every molecule in the created realm. Every ounce of creation tells us something about the Creator. In today's study, we'll talk about the benefits of God's revelation, and the consequences for ignoring what He has said.

    Questions That We'll Answer:

    A) Why do people plug their ears to God's Word?

    B) If a society ignores God, who will they turn to instead?

    C) What about our universities - if they reject divine revelation, what's left?

The Warrior Philosopher Podcast Episode 5 - Rationalism and Empiricism Part 1

The Warrior Philosopher Podcast Episode 5 - Rationalism and Empiricism Part 1

Today’s episode was mainly focused on rationalist philosophy since we ran out of time to cover Empiricism so we’ll have to cover it next week. From Ancient to Continental to potential Modern rationalists, we analyzed the importance of exercising reasoning and critical thinking as well as understanding how we come to conclusions and obtain knowledge. We hope you enjoyed and please let us know your own thoughts.

Is There Proof For God's Existence?

Is There Proof For God's Existence?

After a little gossip about Elon Musk's Twitter we delve into a theological paper called "The Contingency of Knowledge and Revelatory Theism" written by Russ M. Manion which discusses the transcendental argument for God. Russ delves into a concise recap of the history & challenges of atheistic philosophy spanning from Rationalism through Empiricism, Skepticism & Pragmatism, and juxtaposes these philosophies against the theistic belief that a conscious God created the universe with a purpose in mind.

#43 - Artificial General Intelligence and the AI Safety debate
Some people think (https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/uMQ3cqWDPHhjtiesc/agi-ruin-a-list-of-lethalities) that advanced AI is going to kill everyone. Some people don't (https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/31/opinion/superintelligent-artificial-intelligence.html). Who to believe? Fortunately, Ben and Vaden are here to sort out the question once and for all. No need to think for yourselves after listening to this one, we've got you covered. We discuss: - How well does math fit reality? Is that surprising? - Should artificial general intelligence (AGI) be considered "a person"? - How could AI possibly "go rogue?" - Can we know if current AI systems are being creative? - Is misplaced AI fear hampering progress? CULTURE | Postmodernism and the Church

CULTURE | Postmodernism and the Church

In this episode, Abigail Favale broaches the topic of postmodernism with Isaac Choi and Joel Mayward. How does it speak into theology, culture, and the arts? Can postmodernism coexist with modernism? Should everything that suggests a postmodern framework be rejected or feared?

Dr. Isaac Choi studied physics and chemistry at Harvard College. He received two master’s degrees from Princeton Theological Seminary in philosophy and theology, writing a thesis on divine action, quantum mechanics, and computer simulations. His doctoral dissertation in philosophy at the University of Notre Dame was on the nature and epistemology of expertise, centered on the question of how we should decide between disagreeing experts.

Dr. Joel Mayward earned a PhD in divinity at the University of St Andrews in Scotland, where he studied theology, philosophy, and film.

He’s currently the theology editor for The Other Journal, an interdisciplinary journal produced by the Seattle School of Theology & Psychology, and is a professional freelance film critic as a member of the Online Film Critics Society and a “Tomatometer-approved critic” for Rotten Tomatoes. He also runs a film criticism website, cinemayward.com.

Dr. Abigail Favale completed her doctorate at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, where she was a recipient of the competitive Overseas Research Award. In 2011, her dissertation was granted the Samuel Rutherford Prize for the most distinguished thesis in English literature.

017 - Masculine vs Feminine Values - Leisure & The Rapture of Being Alive (Zen and the Art of Making a Living)

017 - Masculine vs Feminine Values - Leisure & The Rapture of Being Alive (Zen and the Art of Making a Living)

How do Masculine & Feminine values shape our culture around work and life in general?

How do you define Masculine & Feminine?  Do you get down with Carl Jung and his badass self?

This episode attempts to define leisure in my own words, as well as explain why I believe it's important.

I do this through exploring  masculine and feminine value structures - Doing vs Being, in a nutshell - and linking them to the way our culture thinks about work, and as a consequence, how we approach life.

I touch upon Carl Jung, Joseph Campbell, I have an excerpt from the Indian guru Sadhguru, and bring in the history of science and empiricism as a potential source for our overwhelming reliance upon the masculine.

    An Unknown God

    An Unknown God

Part 2 of 23 in the extended series "Belonging to Him," which takes an in-depth look at the Gospel through the lens of personal relationship. This sermon asks the question: In what ways, when making the God of personal relationship known to others, is he still unknown to us? It introduces three different worldviews: Premodernism, Modernism, and Postmodernism. It discusses how God can be known and unknown in each, and invites the listener to consider which worldviews are present in their own heart and thinking (sermon recorded in 2018.)

    S1 E35: Epistemology

    S1 E35: Epistemology

The best epistemology chapter yet! In this episode, Mark and Adam heavily agree with a lot of what is being said about the philosophical approaches to knowledge in the Modern Era. John Henry Newman and Ludwig Wittgenstein are highlights with their respective opinions on the role of reason and the grounds for doubt. They also break down Peirce's scientific method, Frege's beliefs on logic, and Bertrand Russell's knowledge by acquaintance and description.  Follow us on Twitter! @UlmtdOpinions

    S1 E33: Logic

    S1 E33: Logic

On this episode, Adam is...well, kinda bored actually. Mark and Adam break down the approaches to logic of various philosophers in the Modern Era of philosophy. They look at the empiricist logic of Mill, Frege's refoundation of logic, the inductive reasoning of Peirce, and the saga of the Principia Mathematica, all while discussing the absolute importance of being able to use logical reasoning. Stay tuned after the outro to listen to an overly long argument about whether or not we are same sides of a different coin!  Follow us on Twitter! @UlmtdOpinions

Michael Falk - Emotional Intelligence as Investment Alpha

    Tune in to hear:

    - What might the personality of an ideal hire for a leadership position in asset management look like?

    - How can one measure things like emotional intelligence and curiosity that can seem kind of ethereal or hard to get your arms around?

    - Has Michael come across any counterintuitive, or surprising, discoveries in his research as he’s tried to fill talent gaps in the financial services industry?

    - How does a company best walk the line between having adequate conflict, to fully vet and consider all perspectives, but not such excessive conflict that it spills over into ugliness?

    - What does the concept of “psychological safety” mean and how can one achieve this perspective throughout their organization?

    - How do we get beyond just paying lip service to wanting productive conflict in an organization and actually get to a point where we can have these conversations?

    - What are some common behavioral traps within decision making processes used by asset managers, and how does Michael council people to begin to overcome these?

    - Is there really something magical about the human touch that is additive to the investment decision making process or can we simply automate these things away?

    - How might we build out a more modular model that takes the best of quant, analysis and data and the best of human decision making and merges these aspects together?

    - What has come into focus for Michael since his ALS diagnosis?

    S1 E23: Knowledge

    S1 E23: Knowledge

What can we know? How much can we know? Who cares? All these questions and more are answered in this episode of Unlimited Opinions! Mark and Adam break down the various Early Modern philosophical perspectives on what we can and cannot know. Adam's least favorite philosophy, scepticism, rears its ugly head in full force, and the pair looks at realism, idealism, empiricism, nominalism, and the various other approaches to knowledge. S1 E22: Hume to Hegel

    S1 E22: Hume to Hegel

Adam is compared to a French revolutionary and Mark gets very upset! Also, the pair breaks down the third and final section of background of Early Modern philosophers, from David Hume to Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. They discuss the flaws in empiricism, the value of theology, and the overcomplication and categorization of many of the philosophers. There are also a couple Tolkien references and a brief discussion on the importance of mythology and other old things!

Faith & Logic: Can You Have Both? - Episode 22

Faith & Logic: Can You Have Both? - Episode 22

Faith and logic. Is there a never-ending war between them or are they closer to two sides of the same coin than we think? Can they coexist within the same person? Can a person have faith in a deity while also being highly logical? Or are faith and logic mutually exclusive? Are they two separate paths that never intersect somewhere off in the distance? We explore allllll of these questions and more in this episode.

Be sure to hit us up on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or via email at FunctionallyDysfunctionalShow@gmail.com. We wanna hear what you think.

    Born or Made?

    Born or Made?

Are we born or made? The question of nature versus nurture is an old one but advancements in genetics and twin studies have given us new insight into this age old question. Genes are part of who we are but it is our environment which not only shapes our behaviour, but also determines how genes behave and whether they even turn on or off. We explore the state of the art understanding of how genes and environment together influence who we are and who we might become.
