New Year Updates: Gratitude, Short Winter Break, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

New Year Updates: Gratitude, Short Winter Break, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Hello everyone! Welcome to a new episode of 5 Minute Chinese. I want to begin by thanking you for listening to my podcast. I sincerely hope that it helps make learning Mandarin Chinese authentic and fun.

Secondly, I want to update you on the busy period from the end of last year to the beginning of 2024. I share the unusually short winter break , lasting less than two weeks. After the brief break, teachers worked hard to finalized the semester grades and comments, which were due last week.

Monday, 1/15 is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a federal holiday in the U.S. I would like to emphasize the importance of remembering the civil rights leader's legacy beyond just enjoying a day off. I think it's worth it to explore the stories behind holidays and commemorative days in our own countries.

Thank you for listening! If you have any questions or comments, please let me know via comment or email. You can find scripts and useful expression below.

    Have a great day!

    From teachers to business owners

    From teachers to business owners

My guests in today’s episode are the wife and husband team of Emily and Paul Hughes.

They are two former teachers who have put their combined 30 years experience in the classroom to set up The Parent Guide to Education.  There’s an array of help for all parenting issues from conception to toddler tantrums, but until now there was nothing to help parents guide their teens through the exam years, which is where Paul & Emily come in.

As well as discussing what the business does, we talk about how they transitioned from being teachers to running their own business, carefully designing and engineering a business they can build.

Being in the Struggle and Asking for Help

Being in the Struggle and Asking for Help

Isn't it wild that we have to pay simply to exist? What is that nonsense? Diving into the high cost of living and how brave it is to reach out and ask for help. Remember: asking for help is not a sign of weakness but rather an act of bravery and self-awareness. Recognizing areas where we need assistance is essential for personal growth and well-being. It's time to break free from repeating the same patterns that haven't led to success and adopt a solutions-based mindset.

41: Sleep; the free fix for our teens with no side effects.

41: Sleep; the free fix for our teens with no side effects.

Everything seems better when we've had enough sleep; our mood is more stable, our response times are faster, we can control our impulses more easily, and perform tasks more effectively.  For teenagers, who are growing rapidly and whose brains are going through a massive rewiring, that need for sleep is arguably even greater. But how many of us are certain that our teens are getting enough sleep?

Can we be sure that their moodiness, lack of attention, impulsiveness or poor grades are really a result of teenage hormones? Could they be caused by a chronic sleep deficit? In this episode we look at how much sleep our teens should be getting, how we can support them in reaching that goal, and the one tip for helping them to shift their sleep window.

Pierce Crowley: UCSA President on the University of Canterbury apologising for policy violating must-pass competency test

Pierce Crowley: UCSA President on the University of Canterbury apologising for policy violating must-pass competency test

Third year Canterbury University engineering students complaining about a must-pass exam have been proved right.

The University has apologised after a new report found taking a competency test in the middle of exam season violated policy.

Its timing meant more than half the students failed.

Student Association President Pierce Crowley says it's not about how tough the exam was, but its timing.

"The students accept that it needs to be tough if you want to be an engineer, but it was just around the structure, it was a lack of clarity around what topics were going to be discussed too. I think that's important. But mainly around having it so close to the main exam period."

Busy Half-Year Summary

Busy Half-Year Summary

Hello everyone! Welcome to a new episode of 5 Minute Chinese. Before anything, I want to apologize for the delay in updating. We are almost half way through the year, and it has been the busiest for me. First, we did so much work around the house: putting down new floors and remodeling the kitchen. I also spent a lot of time researching and planning my parents' upcoming visit to the US. Lastly,  there are just so many things at the end of the semester. But, I see the light at the end of the tunnel!

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to email me or drop a comment on Spotify. I hope you have a wonderful week. Take care!

    (see script below)

Michael Johnston: NZ Initiative Senior Fellow on the proposed changes to new literacy and numeracy tests to reduce failure rate

The Education Ministry's considering changes to new literacy and numeracy tests like fewer questions, simpler language and letting students use spell-check.

Documents obtained by RNZ show the Education Ministry and Qualifications Authority have been at odds about the tests' high failure rates.

In a pilot last year, there was a 34 percent pass rate in writing, 56 percent in maths, and 64 percent in reading.

NZ Initiative Senior Fellow Michael Johnston says the Ministry's clutching at straws.

He says it's spent decades presiding over declining standards while ignoring science on the best way to teach those key skills.

    140: Memorization for Exams

    140: Memorization for Exams

Memorization - Is it outdated? Or, did we throw the baby out with the bathwater?

In this episode we talk about whether we want to encourage memorization for exams or whether we want to avoid testing for it.

Ruth just gave her first exam with a provided equation sheet, and she’s not sure that she liked it. During exams, Claire usually has her students use notecards on which they have written anything they like including relevant equations. Ruth is coming around to thinking memorization is useful, and Claire is coming around to the concept of providing an equation sheet on exams.

Ultimately Ruth and Claire both teach some information that they want the students to have memorized and some information that they think it’s perfectly fine for the students to look up so long as they can find it and know how to use it.

How does memorization apply in your field? Share your thoughts with us at contactprofessorpodcast@gmail.com.
