Turning Fast Fashion into Fair Fashion with Joanna Maiden

Turning Fast Fashion into Fair Fashion with Joanna Maiden

At the heart of ethical employment lies our commitment to providing fair compensation to our workers. By fair, we mean more than just meeting the minimum wage. We're dedicated to offering living wages, enabling our employees to lead financially stable lives, free from undue financial stress. This extends beyond wages; it encompasses essential aspects such as healthcare and family well-being.

But our responsibility as ethical employers doesn't end when our workers retire from our company. We don't treat our employees as mere tools, used and then discarded when they no longer directly contribute to profits.

In our ongoing Living Wage series, we delve into two critical aspects: ethical labour practices and pension support for our valued workers. Joining us in the third episode is Joanna Maiden from SOKO Kenya, who shares her journey of establishing an ethical clothing manufacturing company in Kenya. She went beyond addressing labour and wage concerns; she made sure her people were looked after even during challenging financial times.

Join us now on this journey towards ethical employment practices. By doing so, your business can not only thrive financially but also uphold ethical values every step of the way.

3 reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

    • Embrace the Courage: Pensions may seem like an additional expense for businesses, but discover why they're an investment well-deserving of your attention.
    • Unlock Valuable Insights: Explore Joanna's journey as she navigated the path to guarantee fair compensation for her employees, not just during their employment but even beyond. Sometimes, it starts even before they become part of the team!
    • Sustain the Ethical Revolution: The definition of an 'ethical employer' continually evolves as we encounter fresh challenges in the modern working world. Stay informed and be part of the ongoing revolution in ethical employment practices.

    45) What's The Missing Link to Ethical Fashion? Here's What A Supplier Has to Say | with Arjen Laan of Pactics

    45) What's The Missing Link to Ethical Fashion? Here's What A Supplier Has to Say | with Arjen Laan of Pactics

In this episode, we're going to get a glimpse into the world of supplier factories in fashion.

You'll hear from Arjen Laan, the CEO of Pactics, a sustainability-minded manufacturing company focused on building longer-term partnerships with conscious brands instead of short-term sales.

Arjen is sharing his perspectives, from a supplier side of things, on audits, certifications, and even compliance legislation.

    He's also talking about:

    • The power imbalances between brands and suppliers (particularly, big brands)
    • The imbalance of financial risk and how that leads to a lot of the poor conditions we see at factories today, and
    • The differences between working with smaller brands versus larger corporations

There are a lot of great insights in this episode that gave me some really important food for thought when it comes to how we can really build a better future for fashion. I hope you learn from this conversation, too!

    43) What If Fashion Labels Were Like Nutrition Facts Labels? | with Matt Stockamp of Nisolo

    43) What If Fashion Labels Were Like Nutrition Facts Labels? | with Matt Stockamp of Nisolo

Imagine if, the next time that you were shopping, you could find fashion labels on every garment or pair of shoes or handbag that were as in-depth as the nutrition facts that we see on our food packages.

What if when we looked at a product's tag, it didn't just say where it was made and which fibers it was composed of, but shared if the makers of that garment or pair of sandals or handbag were making living wages and working in good conditions? Or if you could see the carbon footprint and ecological impact of a pair of sneakers and how that stacked up compared to other sneakers that were on the shelf?

Today we are going to envision that future with Matt Stockamp, the Sustainability Lead at an ethical fashion brand you might have heard of, Nisolo.

Hit play to find out how this project can help push for better transparency in fashion.

    14) The Importance of Cultural Sustainability in Fashion with Niha Elety

This episode with Niha Elety is highlighting an incredibly important topic in conscious fashion that doesn't get enough attention: cultural sustainability (or cultural preservation).

In this interview, Niha is shedding light on:

    • How the fashion ecosystem in India — from the fiber cultivation to the production of garments — is inherently sustainable, and what we can learn from that
    • The connections between cultural preservation with social and ecological sustainability
    • How brands and individuals can avoid cultural appropriation
    • And then what true cooperation or co-creation with artisans looks like, and more.

    08) Unpacking Fashion's Colonial Roots and Modern-Day Realities with Sophia Yang (Part 1)

In this powerful and illuminating two-part conversation, Sophia Yang of Threading Change discusses how colonialism has not only shaped fashion, but how colonial systems are deeply embedded in the industry today.

Sophia also shares what equity really is and how we must address exploitation in fashion at its core; the realities of racism and colonialism in not just fast fashion, but the conscious fashion space as well; and why we need to decentralize and decolonize the Eurocentric understanding of land and labor in the fashion space.

    05) Common Sustainable Fashion Myths BUSTED!

From "sustainable fashion is expensive" to "sweatshop jobs are better than no jobs", I'm busting some of the MOST common sustainable fashion myths in this episode.

Sustainable fashion is a journey involving unlearning, learning and perspective shifting.

This episode is certainly not about saying that I know it all — I believed many of these myths and even promoted a couple of them before — and I'm sure there will be more myths that I'll unlearn on my journey.

That said, these are some of the misconceptions that I've seen throughout these years in the conscious fashion space that I wanted to clear up!
