175: Congratulations, you've discovered life beyond MTV. | Girl (1998)

This was a first watch for both me and Jules. Objectively it's no Oscar winner but when you see it for what it is, there was something there. The casting was incredible and Tara Reid basically stole the show.

We get into the realistic fashion, so many quotes we loved, a real-time deep dive on the director (eek), and just how this story was unbelievable and infuriating at times.

What a wild ride! I get to unlock the side of my reality tv brain and have a chat with Emilie and Margaux of Old Millennials Podcast about our history with the genre.

I can't even begin to tell you everything we talked about but lets just say we talked about Tyra Banks fainting on ANTM, fashion adjacent reality shows, MTV reality that raised us, Bravo a plenty, including our thoughts on the new Vanderpump Rules season, and soo much more!

A first on the podcast, we have a special guest for a Forward Flash episode! I'm joined by Samantha of the nostalgia account Lovefool.99 on IG! This was such a blast to deconstruct an early 2000s classic.

Swim along with us as we try to make sense of this literal insane story, the weird acting, and the questionable fashion choices. Like, why does Madison look like she works in a bank?

We get off track then find our way back in the lane to talk the ins and outs of the oddly high body count, the weird teen obsession film genre of the 90s/00s, and why this totally should have had a sequel.

    Enjoy! 💦

172: If you wanna smoke, you can smoke in the trunk. | Excess Baggage (1997)

What a way to welcome the New Year. Excess Baggage is a film from 1997 that almost takes you there but then falls short overall. The casting honestly saved this whole project but it really puts into perspective the importance of a tight story and seamless collaboration.

This film was riddled with re-writes and re-shoots which is typically not a good sign, however watching for the charm and nostalgia factor really made up for it. Me and Mikey spent this episode pointing out the story holes, the drama on set during filming, and I drool over Benicia Del Toro.

171: This is my house. I have to defend it. | Home Alone (1990) 🎄

It's not officially the Christmas season without a rewatch of the 90s classic, Home Alone. I have some residual trauma around this film from when I was kid and I only now as an adult really see the true chaotic and terrifying nature of it all.

Me and Mikey talk the memories of our youth we have with the film, how Macaulay CARRIED, and basically want to call child services on the worst family imaginable.

163: They won't be back... I don't think they like me. | Fire in the Sky (1993)

Well it's October season and we're here to bring the thrills and chills. Charles picked this one and by about 20 mins in I was terrified. The concept of any type of abduction is terrifying, alien or not. While this was released in '93, its based on a true story that happened in the 70s.

We had a time chatting this movie including the male logging thirst trap montage early on, the fashion choices, and why you should never leave the house or get out of a car to investigate a strange hovering red beam of light in the dar forest.

    161: You're a smooth smoothie, you know? | Fargo (1996)

Here we are. Another classic film of the 90s that I am just watching for the first time. I'm not as familiar with the Coen Brother's work so this is a newer genre for me. I've heard so much about Fargo for years and I'm soo glad that I've finally watched it. Me and Charles take a deep dive and basically rave about how much we love Frances McNormand.

There are so many quotable moments that we try to dramatically act out, I realize that I have a massive crush on Steve Buscemi, and now we want to watch the new series'.

159: She's not the type of girl you stop seeing. | Final Analysis (1992)

Well, in this film we didn't get a Final Analysis but boy did we get a whiplash of a story. Based on the movie poster I thought I was getting this racy erotic thriller and while we kinda did, we ended up getting baited and switched in a good way.

Me and Charles had a good first time watch with some surprising results. The fashion, the film noir structure, and the nod to Hitchcock we definitely noticed.

Any chance that I get to talk about the television shows that "made" me is what I life for. For the next episode in the interview series I had a chat with writer Thea Glassman, author of Freaks, Gleeks, and Dawson's Creek: How Seven Shows Transformed Television. She focuses on Fresh Prince of Bel Air, My So Called Life, Dawson's Creek, The OC, Freaks and Geeks, Glee, and Friday Night Lights.

We basically just a have a super fun chat about some of our favorite nostalgic moments of late 90s television. My So Called Life, Dawson's Creek, and Freaks and Geeks were the shows we focused on as the others I haven't seen. Although after speaking with her I'm def adding Friday Night Lights to my growing list of classic shows to watch. I discovered so many behind the scenes deets that she uncovered while writing the book.

    Enjoy! ☕️🍿

156: RED LIGHT, GREEN LIGHT! | Mission: Impossible (1996)

156: RED LIGHT, GREEN LIGHT! | Mission: Impossible (1996)

What are you even doing with your life if you aren't jumping out of a plane or off the side of a building at 60 being a literal spy?

Since it's Mission: Impossible season it was only right to review the one that started it all, the 1996 chapter. As children of the 80s both me and Jai are super familiar with Tom Cruise as an entity and every year he seems to ratchet up our collective blood pressure with each installment in the franchise.

We both remember seeing this film back in the day and it was such a fun ride. Some of the things we touch on is the amazing minimalist fashion, some Scientology, and marvel at the practical effects they used on the most "impossible" scenes.

There is nothing that excites me more than talking about television. As a true child of the 90s, I lived by the tv on weeknights. One of the formative shows of my teenage years is and will always be, Dawson's Creek.

I had an almost 2 hour chat with Stephen and Jayme of Creek Talk Podcast ALL about our mutual journey with the residents of Capeside. We touch on the brilliance of Abby Morgan, the strange storylines and hilarious moments, and other shows and moments that keep our nostalgic hearts beating.

147: Did you eat a lot of paint chips when you were a kid? | Tommy Boy (1995)

When we talk about formative movies of my childhood, Tommy Boy is top 3. I wore my VHS tape out and finally we're getting to talk about it here on the pod. I enlisted Jules, my 90s comedy buddy to review this one. And HOLY SCHNIKES!

The both of us had a literal Baja blast talking this iconic comedy buddy road trip film starring legends Chris Farley and David Spade. We could basically quote the entire thing and we spend the first half of the episode talking about the state of comedy past and present, classic SNL casts,  and the literal genius and melancholy of the subject matter.

We're back on the Patreon with a blast from the past! And boy was this one a doozy. Charles picked this one and I completely forgot how this film descends into literal chaos at the end. Apparently there was a sequel novel set in the 70s, which was interesting to hear about.

This was a great watch again and it's easy to see why this is one of cinema's classics of the 1960s. We get into the Oscars that year, the casting process, and so many of our favorite scenes and lines.

146: You used me for football. I'll use you to get into Harvard. | School Ties (1992)

In keeping with the worlds 'Brendan Fraser Renaissance' it was time to discuss the film that started his career, School Ties. While this film is hard to watch for many reasons, it's still required viewing. The story is set in the 1950s and revolves around the anti-Semitism at a boys prep school. While the performances of emerging actors that we know so well today are front and center, it's Brendan Fraser that really gives such a powerful performance.

This was Jai's first time watching and  for me it's been a good while since I've seen it. Basically not only does it seem that boys prep schools are breeding grounds for evil in this film, however the adults are not much better. In our behind the scenes research we learned an incredible amount about where actress Amy Locane is now, prep fashion,  and the casting process.

Omg I'm so excited the day is finally here that we're reviewing Face/Off. I have a thing for these 90s action films and the crazier the better. What could be more nuts than a facial transplant surgery with little to no recovery time and a hell of a prison escape cat and mouse game?

Well...we're here. It's literally Jai's favorite film and she's been on edge waiting until we talked it here on the pod. It has been at least 20 years since I've seen this so it was a weird wild time revisiting it. In my previous watch I had no idea just how incredible the cinematography and production design was. While it's been inspiring creatives since the 70s, there is always something about the original that has to been seen.

While me and Jai had differing views on the film as a whole, we still had a time! We get into the MANY behind the scenes deets, the FASHION, and just the overall weirdness that makes Kubrick a master and visionary of the visual arts.

Again, what a weird selection I've made for this October month. This is a film that I doubt anyone has seen but a few out there. Originally titled "Dead Man's Curve", it was the second film in the same year with this weird urban legend roommate scam. I roped Mikey into watching this and pretty much pointing out what we would change or just air our general grievances. On the other hand I never need a reason to watch a Matthew Lillard film.
