Is Perfectionism Hiding Your Pain? (feat. Dr. Margaret Rutherford)

Is Perfectionism Hiding Your Pain? (feat. Dr. Margaret Rutherford)

Could your perfectionism actually be a sign of depression?

Today, Jenn is talking with Dr. Margaret Rutherford, a clinical psychologist with thirty years of experience, who is also an author, TedX speaker, and podcast host. Dr. Rutherford discusses the two types of perfectionism, and how one version of it is maladaptive and is actually harming us. She describes what socially determined perfectionism is, and gives some helpful tips about identifying it and tools to work through challenging the behaviors. Tune in to find out if perfectionism might actually be hiding your pain.

This episode may contain topics that are triggering such as abuse and suicide.

The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let’s dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store.

    IN THIS EPISODE:

    ●   [6:10] Was Dr. Margaret Rutherford always interested in the psychology space?

    ●   [7:50] Did Dr. Margaret Rutherford struggle with eating in her younger years?

    ●   [11:00] How did she come to find the overlap of perfectionism and depression?

    ●   [14:46] Where is the line between a coping or survival strategy vs. behaviors that are maladaptive and hurt us?

    ●   [20:34] What is socially determined perfectionism?

    ●   [26:44] If we don’t identify with this conversation, how can we support others who may?

    ●   [30:39] How do vulnerabilities translate into flaws?

    ●   [31:46] How do we help people walk through healing? What are Dr. Margaret Rutherford’s 5 stages of healing?

    ●   [37:37] How do you start to challenge your behaviors?

    ●   [38:55] How does Dr. Rutherford help patients find true self compassion?

    ●   [41:03] Why is “breaking the silence” so important?

    KEY TAKEAWAYS:

    ●   How we hide perfectionism depression: we don’t allow the experience of negative emotions. It's almost like dissociating, like it's there, but we don’t feel it. There is also the fear of being exposed. The shame invades our self worth. Vulnerability translates into flaws.

    ●   Even if you have moved past or healed past toxic behaviors, it is still possible to struggle with toxic thinking. For example, if you’ve struggled with an eating disorder in the past but no longer have those behaviors, you may still struggle with the thoughts that come with eating disordered thinking.

    ●   Many times, the effort to control the uncontrollable often shows up in our food as perfectionism.

    ●   Not all perfectionism is destructive, but destructive or maladaptive perfectionism is. Maladaptive perfectionism can lead to increased risk of suicidality and it can be easy to hide.

    QUOTES:

“But the trauma timeline is very helpful for people because it actually asks you to go back to certain times in your life when you were very young, to when you’re a teenager, to when you’re in your twenties or thirties, and talk about the things or acknowledge the things that were helpful to you, that really helped you feel good about yourself and the things that did not, the things that began to make you feel unsafe or unlovable. And you wanna go back with compassion. It’s not about blaming people.” - Dr. Margaret Rutherford

“But where you get hope is when you see yourself change. When you allow yourself to express an emotion you’ve never allowed yourself to express. When you do something or you don't do something you always do, that you can begin to say I am making choices in the moment.” - Dr. Margaret Rutherford

“It just begins opening. It begins giving you freedom. Self-compassion is important, but so is the sense of self-acceptance. And my working definition of self-acceptance is that neither your strengths nor your vulnerabilities completely define you. They both exist, but they don’t. Neither one of them completely define who you are.” - Dr. Margaret Rutherford

"Looking closer at your own perfectionism and understanding yourself might be a critical piece for your mental and physical health." - Jenn Trepeck

    GUEST BIO:

Margaret Robinson Rutherford Ph.D., a clinical psychologist with thirty years of experience, is also an author, TedX speaker, and podcast host. Her book, Perfectly Hidden Depression: How to Break Free from the Perfectionism That Masks Your Depression, has reached thousands here in the US, as well as having an international impact, with translations reaching from Korea to Italy, Turkey to Germany. Her highly popular podcast, The SelfWork Podcast, has been continuously rated as one of the best podcasts for mental health and depression.

Dr. Margaret’s known for her vibrantly engaging and theoretically well-crafted presentations, whether live or virtual. Whether her diverse audiences are made up of mental health professionals, construction workers, or office managers, her passionate message is that healthy mental and emotional lives can be created through becoming more transparent with one another. Sharing who you really are with those you trust is a huge step toward connection and good mental health. Rates of depression and suicide are skyrocketing. And there’s something we can do!

She’s further challenging the mental health profession to question their overreliance on the official symptom checklist for diagnosis. Instead, we need to create normalcy around suicidal feelings, listen to each person’s actual experience of their life, and respond with safety and compassion, rather than stigmatizing this very real and excruciatingly painful part of human existence

60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday: There Is Value and Worth in Our Cracked Pot Selves

60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday: There Is Value and Worth in Our Cracked Pot Selves

Hello to you listening in River Forest, Illinois!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga.

Do you get the feeling that maybe things around us are broken or, at least cracked? Maybe you feel this way. Maybe like me you also complicate the feeling of being cracked by creating inner stories about worthiness while trying to ignore  pain and hide flaws.

Maybe it’s true and maybe it isn’t but once there was a woman who rose at dawn to carry water from the river to her hut. Her pot was cracked while her neighbors had perfect pots. The water carrier felt ashamed that her pot was flawed and therefore she was flawed as well because she could not afford a perfect pot. What if this women was you? What if a friend pointed to the many flowers that had sprung up from the daily watering and asked, "How would these flowers have bloomed here unless your cracked pot had watered them?"

Story Prompt: Our lives are shaped by the stories we tell ourselves about our worth and value. Claiming our authentic contribution to the world begins with making a conscious decision to know what stories we are telling and ask, “Is this true?”  Without you being just the way you are, flowers of strength, courage and wisdom would not have bloomed where you are walking.  What is true about your worth and value? Write that story!

Practical Tip: The magic of stories is also in the sharing. If you wish share your story with someone or something.   All that matters is you have a story.

You’re invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you’ll subscribe, share a nice shout out on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time! Remember to stop by the website, check out the Services, arrange a Discovery Call, and Opt In to stay current with Diane and Quarter Moon Story Arts and on Linked In.

    Episode 177: Hebrews 3 Part 1 Moses Was God’s Homie But…

    Episode 177: Hebrews 3 Part 1 Moses Was God’s Homie But…
Moses was chosen by God to lead the Hebrew people out of Egyptian bondage and into a land God had promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Even though Moses was faithful and did lead the people out, Moses had some flaws. He doubted God and tried to persuade God out of choosing him at first. Then his biggest flaw was not speaking to the rock to get water but instead, out of anger, he struck the rock twice! Because he disobeyed God, Moses only got to see the promised land and didn’t enter it. The author’s point is Jesus is better than Moses because he was 100% faithful to God and never had a single flaw! And since Jesus is greater, we can put our faith and trust in Him…

Confidence, Flaws and Values with Kelli Thompson
We often get feedback about a behavior that is too much – such as being too direct, too quiet or too assertive. However that same behavior is a core quality and it has generated great results. When does a strength tip into a liability? How do we think about these “flaws” in a way that is more productive? How does this help us boost confidence? Tune in to discover a fascinating approach.

Fathers and Flaws: What Works and Doesn't

Fathers and Flaws: What Works and Doesn't

Yes, you pushed play and you are about to receive a gift.  Some of you had terrible or absent Dads.  There is hope and you are not done yet.  What works in life and what doesn't, we pursue Truth, here you go...side note, this was recorded back in June 19th, 2020...repurposed for the audio book, "Every Marriage and Family is Flawed".  You can find that audiobook in its entirety shared right here back in 2021.  It's a timeless lesson reflected during a very contentious time.  BTW, how much have we solved since then?  Better or worse?  How about all these political promises and re-imagining everything?  As stated, you are not changing anything without changed hearts.  There is one ultimate solution and many reject it.  Here you go...

Man!  So good!  Thank you Dad!  Skeptic, how many societal problems could we solve with men like that.  This is the Order.  We have the blue print.  Yet, as humans we love to do it 'our' or 'my' way.  God's way works...if you are properly tuned in.  Getting the pull to some of you that didn't have a Dad or maybe you weren't a great Dad.  If you didn't have a great Dad like Maya or Bold or like my Dad, may you realize like them, your ultimate Father is up there.  Tune in like they did and feel that love you have never felt before.  Take my Dad's suggestion and start in Ephesians.  For those with kids and or older, if you are still breathing you can still make a difference.  Apologie to the ones you hurt.  Serve them and their kids if you can.  Bonus challenge, pick a community nearest you that you know has been hardest hit via COVID and/or racial tensions.  Google for churches in that region, pick one and tell them you would like to step up as a mentor for youth in need.  Super bonus, will you share this with every Dad you know?  Could you imagine this world if we had more Denzel's and Jon's and Maya's in this world?  Share what works.

Ending on a song note, one more share request, could you share this with anyone that hasn't had a great Dad?  A reason for hope and encouragement, listen to the words from Maya Moore or Jon Penton.  You have a flawed earthly Father.  You have a Heavenly Father that loves you more than you may ever realize.  Now to the song, I have to go here, can you imagine being a child awoken with this saying and what kind of mindset you would have going into each day no matter how bright or challenging, "This is the Day", a soulful, beautiful version by Brian Courtney Wilson.  If you dig, please give Brian some love and subscribe to his music.  If you believe, share that verse with your kids daily.  Now, go and love, love your true Heavenly Father, if you have kids, love your kids' mom, model that for your kids, it is one of the greatest gifts you can give them...legacy...

    Why Are You Here?

    Why Are You Here?
    • Yes!  You are in!  Why are you here?  Why do we go to war?  Deep questions.  That is what we tackle. Flawed dudes getting real and pursuing Truth, here is your Play of the Day...
    • Word!  Thank you Pastor Rick, you are on a roll!  If you dug that, please check out 'Daily Hope', simply search that and it will be your first result, I bet.  That 'Play of the Day' came from "What on Earth Am I Here For? - Part 1", published on the 24th of February 2022.
    • Love that Mark Twain quote.  Two of the most important days is the day you were born and then discovering why.  I'll add on to that.  Discovering and accepting who is your savior from this brutal, broken, frustrating planet is thee most important day.  Interesting that this publishes on the day Russia invades Ukraine.  What will happen?  World War?  I don't know.  God knows.  As my Brother Casey the Jogging Jesus says, the Bible tells you what has happened, is happening and will happen.   We flawed humans create wars.  Wars between countries, between families, between marriages.  It is what flawed humans do.  Should we be surprised?  And the ignorant say we don't need a guide.
    • As many people make fun and mock us.  I simply retort in a factual way.  Atheists, you bet on hopelessness.  We bet on Hope.  Atheists bet on self-centeredness.  True "Christians" bet on something much, much larger than themselves.  Side note, we all wrestle with 'self-centeredness and pride' to a degree.  We simply have a guide and choose to tune into it or not - the Owner's Manual for Life, the Bible.  We bet on Love.  Love for the creator that created you.  Love for others (whether they like us or not).  So counter intuitive.  Some of us want to cancel, some of us want to love and encourage.
    • Okay, so here is one of the dopest verses, can you say dope verse?  Hmmmm, this is probably why I rub some of you the wrong way.  Let's just say this, it is an epic verse, Psalm 139:  13-18
    • 13 For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
      14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
          your works are wonderful,
          I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
      16 Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
17 How precious to me are your thoughts,[a] God!
How vast is the sum of them!
18 Were I to count them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand—
when I awake, I am still with you.
    • There's a saying out there, We may think we have accidental pregnancies.  However, God does not make accidental lives.  That's something to put in your contemplation pipe and smoke it.  Your parents may have not have planned you.  Yet your Heavenly Father, absolutely planned you.  You are not here by accident.  You are here for a reason.  You have a purpose.  Jeremiah 1:5...
    • “Before I formed you in the womb I knew[a] you,
          before you were born I set you apart;
    • For you beating yourselves up right now, all your past mistakes and regrets, Rom 8:28 is for you.

60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday: Like a Cracked Pot Where Is the Beauty in Your Flaws?

60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday: Like a Cracked Pot Where Is the Beauty in Your Flaws?

Hello to you listening in Eugene, Oregon!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday with your host, Diane Wyzga.

In various conversations lately I've been talking about being broken or, at least being cracked. We are cracked. We complicate being cracked by creating inner stories about our worthiness while trying to ignore our pain and hide our flaws.

Maybe it’s true and maybe it isn’t but there once was a woman who carried water from the river to her hut. Her pot was cracked while her neighbors had perfect pots. Each looked at the other with envy or disdain. Until one day the woman noticed that along the path she walked with her cracked pot flowers had sprung up from the watering the seeds received every day.

Story Prompt: Without you being just the way you are, flowers of strength, courage and wisdom would not have bloomed where you are walking.  Flaws and weaknesses are natural parts of life. Where is the beauty in your flaws? Write that story!

Practical Tip: The magic of stories is also in the sharing. If you wish share your story with someone or something.   All that matters is you have a story.

You’re invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you’ll subscribe, share a nice shout out on your social media or podcast channel of choice, (including Android, Amazon Music and Audible) and join us next time! You are a winner regardless

    You are a winner regardless

It is okay to love yourself as much as you love others. Self-love is essential to your mental health.  The self-love affirmation for today is I AM AWARE I HAVE FLAWS AND GOD CAN USE THEM FOR HIS GLORY. The definition of flaw is "a fault or weakness in a person's character." In the Bible, Paul says he will gladly boast in his infirmities because it is the power of Christ that rests upon him. I want you to know that in spite of your weaknesses or flaws, you are still a winner. You are still loved. You are still wanted. You are okay just the way you are because God can use your weakness for His Glory. His power is revealed instead of your weakness because His grace is enough. What people or you may say that you lack, God say it is enough. So, love on every flaw you have because God has beautifully and wonderfully made you. These self-love affirmation cards can be purchased at www.acclimatedtotherapy.com

Are You a Peach or a Pear? Not Everyone Is Going to Like You | Episode 128

Coming to understand that we are flawesome (flawed + awesome) and that not everyone is going to like us is a GAME CHANGER for many of us in recovery! When we realize that we're fine just as we are, and some people are just never gonna like us, life gets easier. I give a metaphor for thinking about this which is that - maybe you're a peach, and not everyone likes peaches. No one blames the peach, and no one blames the person for not liking peaches. That's just the way it is. Not everyone likes peaches.
