    Healthy Options 2/6/19

    Healthy Options 2/6/19

Producer/Host: Rhonda Feiman Production Assistance: Petra Hall Studio Engineer: John Greenman To (Hand)Shake or Not to Shake…? That is the question (and more) which host Rhonda Feiman explores with Dr. Miryam Wahrman, author of The Hand Book: Surviving in a Germ-Filled World. Key Discussion Points: a) What role does the immune system play in keeping us healthy, and how can we stay healthy in a “germ-filled world”? b) Won’t our immune system take care of any infectious germs we are exposed to, and why should we wash our hands, when we have an immune system? c) Just why IS hand washing so important, and what is the best technique for hand washing? d) Do alcohol wipes or hand sanitizers work? Do we need hand sanitizers with anti-microbial additives? e) Should we use anti-bacterial agents? f) What are the risks we face when visiting a healthcare facility? What should health care providers do, to better protect themselves and their clients- and why should you not be shaking your doctor’s hands (and substitute a bow or a fist bump instead!)? Guest: Miryam Wahrman, Professor of Biology at William Paterson University and author of The Hand Book: Surviving in a Germ-Filled World. The Hand Book makes the case for hand washing as a vital means to reduce the risk of infectious disease, and presents the history, religious and cultural roots of hand washing, how scientists discovered that germs cause disease, and the science behind hand hygiene. It also exposes the shocking truth that many people – including healthcare workers- do not wash properly. Professor Wahrman offers tips to improve hygiene to stay healthier at home, work, school and, most importantly, in healthcare facilities where poor hygiene can be deadly. Talking Achoo

    Talking Achoo

Holding back a sneeze by pinching your nose while keeping your mouth closed may cause physical injury. In one such documented case, an otherwise healthy 34-year-old man in the U.K. suffered a tear in the back of his throat after sneezing while stifling it, by sealing both airways. He explained his neck had become swollen after he tried to contain a forceful sneeze while keeping both nostrils and mouth closed. Doctors who examined him heard popping and crackling sounds, which extended from his neck all the way down to his ribcage. Jeff and Anthony debate sneezing etiquette.

    Listener Q&A:

As compiled, deciphered, edited and sometimes read by Brock Skywalker Armstrong, the Podcast Sidekick and Audio Ninja.

What Is The Best Way To Eat Eggs?

Andrew asks: He is following a hypertrophy diet right now and is eating 4 eggs cooked in coconut oil every day for breakfast. He likes his eggs scrambled but has heard that scrambling eggs can introduce oxygen that along with the heat from cooking, can oxidize the cholesterol in the eggs and create free radicals that are detrimental to health. What is the best way to eat eggs?

      Gelatin vs. Collagen

Gelatin asks: He is wanting to use something other than bone broth to heal his gut. Which would be the best substitute: Great Lakes Gelatin, Great Lakes Hydrolyzed Collagen or Upgraded Collagen. What would be the differences? Is there any truth to Dave Asprey's claims that his collagen is produced in a way that leaves the peptides intact and provides more collagen than bone broth.

      Better Sleep for New Mothers

Jenn asks: She just had a baby 6 weeks ago (and also has a 2 year old). Needless to say she is not getting good sleep at night and is not able to nap during the day. Is there anything she can take/do at night to help the little sleep she does get be more restorative? Or is there something she can use during the day to have more energy?

In my response I recommend: -My two part series on getting better sleep. Foam Roller 101

Joe asks: His personal trainer has been telling him to foam roll but he finds it very painful. His trainer says it will get easier and hurt less with time. What is your opinion and how/why does it get easier and less painful?

In my response I recommend: -Rumble Roller Germs on Water Fountains

KJ asks: What is more sanitary? The water fountain or the water faucet at the gym? He has heard that you shouldn't drink out of a water fountain but is it any more sanitary to use the faucet in the locker room instead?
