Biopharma Buzz: The Only Podcast for Pharma and Biotech Updates

Biopharma Buzz: The Only Podcast for Pharma and Biotech Updates
Good morning from Pharma and Biotech daily: the podcast that gives you only what's important to hear in Pharma e Biotech world.Several developments in the biopharma industry were reported on March 6. Gilead made a bet on 'trispecifics' in a new cancer drug deal, Alumis secured $259 million for its work on a drug targeting Tyk2, Regenxbio's data showed promise in Duchenne gene therapy, Alnylam and Roche's blood pressure drug performed well in a mid-stage trial, and Sionna raised $182 million to challenge Vertex in cystic fibrosis treatment. The sector saw a surge in biotech IPOs at the beginning of 2024, prompting discussions on whether this trend will continue. The biosimilars market in the US has been growing steadily since its slow start in 2015. Additionally, Brazil declared a state of emergency due to dengue cases, AstraZeneca invested in the UK for pandemic preparedness, and companies rushed to preserve skeletal muscle after the success of obesity drugs.Dexcom has received FDA approval for the first over-the-counter continuous glucose monitor for people with type 2 diabetes. Vicarious continues to focus on launching its soft tissue robot despite financial struggles. Smiths Medical has recalled nearly 86,000 syringe pumps due to a software issue. Haemonetics is set to acquire Attune Medical for $160 million. Medtronic estimates up to 40 job losses in Ireland as part of restructuring efforts. The EU Medical Device Regulation is causing challenges for small and medium-sized medtech companies. Other news includes Philips being sued for milestone payments, a dentistry AI developer receiving a $53 million investment, and CMS rolling out provider flexibilities amid cyberattack fallout.Alumis has raised $259 million in a Series C funding round, making it the largest haul in 2024 for a private biotech company. The California-based biotech plans to use the funding to move its tyk2 inhibitor into phase III for plaque psoriasis, potentially challenging competitors Bristol Myers Squibb and Takeda in the autoimmune market. Other key focuses for investors in 2024 include psychedelics and solid tumors. Sandoz has received FDA approvals for the first two biosimilars for Amgen's denosumab, while Sionna Therapeutics has closed a $182 million Series C round to potentially challenge Vertex Pharmaceuticals in the cystic fibrosis market. Overall, experts anticipate increased interest in the autoimmune and obesity spaces this year, following a trend of heightened investment in oncology and neuroscience in 2023.In 2024, investors are expected to focus on psychedelics, solid tumors, autoimmune, and obesity drugs in the biopharma industry. Pfizer's decision to prioritize biologics over small molecules was influenced by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). Researchers suggest that the IRA could potentially discourage drug developers from pursuing subsequent indications for existing drugs, leading to a decrease in new drug approvals. Biopharma mergers and acquisitions are on the rise, with Biospace launching an M&A tracker to keep track of industry transactions. The 10th Annual American Biomanufacturing Summit is set to bring together industry leaders to discuss current trends and best practices. In other news, AstraZeneca lost a court case related to the IRA, the ADC market in oncology is expected to reach $30 billion by 2028, and various biopharma companies have secured substantial funding for drug development. Pfizer is focusing on four main cancer types and aims to launch eight blockbuster drugs by 2030.

60 Seconds for Thoughts on Thursday: I Just Know There’s a Pony Down Here Somewhere!

60 Seconds for Thoughts on Thursday: I Just Know There’s a Pony Down Here Somewhere!

Hello to you listening in Antwerp, Belgium!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Thoughts on Thursday and your host, Diane Wyzga.

Perhaps you’ve heard the old joke about two boys each of whom is brought into a room in the middle of which is a staggeringly high heap of horse manure. The first boy looks at the pile in disgust and says, “What’s the big idea? This is nothing but a pile of horse manure!” But in the other room the second boy is down on his hands and knees gleefully scooping away at the heap saying, “I just know there’s a pony down here somewhere!”

We all face unfairness, difficulties, challenges, and worse. And yet these might not be wasted moments if we can see a chance to learn from the misfortunes encompassing our plans, our contradictions, failings, and hopes.

I keep thinking of a line from the 2004 novel Gilead by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Marilynne Robinson, a story about how wisdom was forged and lives on in generations. The narrator is the grandson of a minister who, as a young man in Maine, saw a vision of Christ bound in chains and came west to Kansas to fight for abolition and then, at age fifty, became a chaplain in the Union Army, losing his right eye in battle. Here’s what he said about the trials, turmoils and tribulations of his life: “I am confident I will find great blessing in this.” And that is what he said about everything that happened to him for the rest of his days.

Practical Tip: The School of Hard Knocks is not an easy place to get an education but the lessons learned might help us to overcome, perhaps even thrive in what Life throws our way. Guaranteed!

You’re always invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, would you subscribe, share a 5-star rating + nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time!

The Riddle - The Book of Judges

The Riddle - The Book of Judges

In this Bible Story, Samson battles with a lion, breaks his vow as a Nazarite, and marries a Philistine woman. His foolishness costs him greatly, and his wife marries another man. This story is inspired by Judges 14. Go to BibleinaYear.com and learn the Bible in a Year.

Today's Bible verse is Judges 14:14 from the King James Version.

Episode 67: Samson, now a grown man, was walking around in the city of Timnah one day. He caught sight of a beautiful woman and immediately went back to his home to ask his parents to fetch her for him as a wife. On the way there a lion attacked Samson, but the Spirit of the Lord was upon him and he defeated the lion with his bare hands. In his pride, this became the perfect excuse to set up a riddle to place a bet and win himself 30 new garments at his wedding party. But we should be careful with what we say or do in moments of pride because just like Samson we might end up losing more than we imagine instead.

Solomon Avenging the Righteous - The Book of 1 Kings

Solomon Avenging the Righteous - The Book of 1 Kings

In this Bible Story, the great reign of David came to a close. Now Solomon rules over Israel with wisdom, mercy, and justice. As his first act as king, Solomon takes care of those who were loyal to his father, and deals justly with those who betrayed him. This story is inspired by 1 Kings 2. Go to BibleinaYear.com and learn the Bible in a Year.

Today's Bible verse is 1 Kings 2:45 from the King James Version.

Episode 113: As David is dying, he calls in his son Solomon to bless him and speak God’s promises over him. David instructs him on what he should do with Joab and Shimei and requests that he show kindness to Barzillai of Gilead. But Adonijah was not done trying for the throne. He made a request of Bathsheba that Solomon rightly discerned as a claim to the throne. And so as per their agreement, he was executed. Solomon sought to rule his kingdom in fairness and enacted punishments that showed mercy to those who deserved death.

In this episode, Ayesha discussed Gilead Science’s lawsuit against a network of distributors selling counterfeits of the company’s best-selling HIV drugs Biktarvy and Descovy. Gilead says it’s taking action to ensure the counterfeits are removed from circulation. The editorial team talked about the significant dangers of counterfeit drugs with respect to patient safety and that stricter regulations around tracking and audits at pharmacies should be implemented to prevent the distribution of counterfeit products.
