Stephen C. Meyer: Can This Man PROVE That God Exists?

Stephen C. Meyer: Can This Man PROVE That God Exists?

In a lively yet in-depth discussion, Piers Morgan drills down to the core of human existence with Stephen C. Meyer, the prominent ‘intelligent design’ advocate.

In this Piers Morgan Uncensored special, Meyers firmly rejects the idea that a scientific worldview leads to atheism, arguing instead that ‘the universe requires a creator or cause’. When Richard Dawkin’s name is mentioned, Meyer claims that he actually really loves the atheist firebrand and admires his intensity. Lastly, Morgan and Meyers agree that the question of God’s existence is tied to more than just cold hard facts, but also human nature itself.

If Allah Has No Gender, Why Not Refer To God As 'She?'

If Allah Has No Gender, Why Not Refer To God As 'She?'
When people speak about God in various religions, the deity is typically referred to using the masculine pronoun "He."

In Islam, Allah is not depicted as male or female — Allah has no gender. Yet Allah has traditionally been referred to, and imagined by many, as a man.

Some Muslim women have begun to refer to Allah with feminine or gender neutral pronouns.

NPR's Ari Shapiro speaks with Hafsa Lodi, who wrote about this movement in the religion magazine The Revealer, about what's driving this.

Mayim Bialik On: Anxiety, Anger, Believing in Both Neuroscience and God, and the Pressures of Being a Teen TV Star

Mayim Bialik On: Anxiety, Anger, Believing in Both Neuroscience and God, and the Pressures of Being a Teen TV Star

Historically on this show, we want guests who either have skills that they can teach us (i.e. meditation teachers or happiness researchers) or we want people who are willing to get super personal about their interior lives—and today you're gonna meet a bold-faced name who happens to have both qualifications in spades.

Mayim Bialik burst onto the scene in the 1990s as the star of the TV show Blossom. Then she stepped away, got a bachelor's and a PhD in neuroscience, and became a mom. She returned to TV with another sitcom, The Big Bang Theory. And now she has a very full plate as the co-host of Jeopardy! and the host of a podcast of her own called Mayim’s Breakdown. Oh, and she’s also written four books, including Girling Up: How to Be Strong, Smart, and Spectacular and Boying Up: How to Be Brave, Bold, and Brilliant

In this episode we talk about:

    • The pressures of being a teen star
    • Mayim’s fascination with the brain
    • How she squares her scientific expertise with her religious beliefs
    • Why she half-jokingly says she was born “a mental health challenge”
    • The difference between anxiety attacks and panic disorder
    • Why she's chosen to be so public about her complicated psychiatric history
    • Whether it's possible to be overdiagnosed
    • The tools she personally uses to stay afloat
    • What’s behind her busyness, and what happened when she decided to stop working all the time
    • And why at age 47, she's now taking the time to learn how to express her anger in a healthy way

A note that there are some mentions of suicide and addiction in this episode.

You're Stronger Than You Think w/ Joel Osteen

You're Stronger Than You Think w/ Joel Osteen
Like many of you, I’m a person of STRONG FAITH AND CONVICTION.  My LOVE of my GOD means everything to me and has brought me PEACE, PURPOSE, and STRENGTH throughout my entire life.   Before I tell you about this week’s guest, PASTOR JOEL OSTEEN, I want to make it clear that I RESPECT and ENCOURAGE you to practice your faith and spirituality in any way you see fit.   That said, I wanted to share this UPLIFTING interview with Joel because it goes way beyond any single religious persuasion, exposes you to NEW IDEAS, and most of all, GIVES YOU A LOT TO THINK ABOUT.   For more than 20 years, Joel has combined his love of the ministry with a savvy approach to media and business to build one of the LARGEST FOLLOWINGS in the world.  The Lakewood Church has become one of the most popular visitor destinations in Houston and currently draws more than 45,000 WEEKLY ATTENDEES.  Joel’s international broadcast following has expanded into more than 200 MILLION HOUSEHOLDS in the United States alone. And his dedicated SIRIUSXM channel (Channel 128) and NIGHT OF HOPE events worldwide continue to amplify his messages to millions of more people.   Incredibly, Joel never set out to do the work he does today.  The story of how he reluctantly filled in to deliver a sermon for his ailing father that turned out to be the FULFILLMENT of his DESTINY is a powerful example of God’s hand at work that you need to hear, along with the importance of CONQUERING YOUR FEARS to live the life you were meant to lead.   We talk about facing dark seasons in our lives, and how we can OVERCOME CHALLENGES and by holding onto our faith.     Joel also reveals how he prays, why GRATITUDE is a big part of his conversations with God, and the role of DESTINY in our lives.   If you struggle with CONFIDENCE (and most of us do), Joel offers advice on overcoming your fears and doubts by mastering self-defeating limitations.   We also touch on LETTING GO of things that add nothing to our lives and FOCUSING ON WHAT MATTERS MOST, a lesson all of us NEED TO LEARN.   JOEL OSTEEN is a tremendous force for GOOD IN THE WORLD, and after you listen to this week’s episode, you’ll know exactly why.   Learn more about your ad choices. 154 | Reza Aslan on Religion, Metaphor, and Meaning

154 | Reza Aslan on Religion, Metaphor, and Meaning

Religion is an important part of the lives of billions of people around the world, but what religious belief actually amounts to can vary considerably from person to person. Some believe in an anthropomorphic, judgmental God; others conceive of God as more transcendent and conceptual; some are animists who attribute spiritual essence to creatures and objects; and many more. I talk with writer and religious scholar Reza Aslan about his view of religion as a vocabulary constructed by human beings to express a connection with something beyond the physical world — why one might think that, and what it implies about how we should go about living our lives.

Ep. 96 - Without God There Can Be No Objective Morality

Ep. 96 - Without God There Can Be No Objective Morality

An atheist cannot logically make objective moral claims. He cannot logically say that any action at all is objectively right or objectively wrong. Yet, many atheists do make such claims. Many atheists do believe that things like rape, murder, theft, etc., are not just subjectively wrong, but actually wrong. Atheists seem to recognize a moral code, even though no such moral code could exist without God. What does that tell us about atheism, God, and morality? Let's talk about that now.

Episode #034 ... Spinoza pt. 2 - Force of Nature

Episode #034 ... Spinoza pt. 2 - Force of Nature
On this episode of the podcast, we continue learning about Spinoza, this time focusing on his concept of God. We begin by asking ourselves whether or not Stephen’s English bulldog Charlie is part of God, and analyzing the implications of our answer. Next, we discuss the concept of “substance” and what Spinoza thought the only one true substance was (hint: it’s not water). Finally, we consider how Spinoza’s concept of God/Nature impacts his thoughts on free will and why he would say Stephen has no choice but to imitate a drunk person singing “I Love Rock and Roll” every time he drives past that certain billboard. Episode #021 ... One God - St. Thomas Aquinas

Episode #021 ... One God - St. Thomas Aquinas
On this episode of the podcast, we learn about the Christian Aristotelean philosopher St. Thomas Aquinas. We begin by examining a song by The Postal Service which sets the stage for a discussion about how often humans mistake correlation with causation. Next, we learn about Aristotle’s conception of God as “The Unmoved Mover” and his thoughts on the nature of infinity. All of these ideas lead us to St. Thomas Aquinas’ quest to reconcile Aristotelianism and Christianity, which he approaches by arguing that the Christian belief that God created the universe and the Aristotelean belief that the universe has always existed are not mutually exclusive ideas. Episode #020 ... Two Medieval Approaches To God

Episode #020 ... Two Medieval Approaches To God
On this episode of the podcast, we discuss the concept of God from a philosophical perspective. We first broaden our definition of God by recalling the multitude of ways that the philosophers we’ve already studied have approached the subject. Next, we examine St. Anselm’s famous “Ontological Argument” in proof of God’s existence, which is strangely reminiscent of a tongue twister Ron Burgundy might use to prepare for his evening newscast. Finally, we learn why Moses Maimonides would say that the first rule of God is, “You do not talk about God.” Or at least, “You do not talk about what God is, only what he isn’t.” All this and more on the latest episode of Philosophize This!
