RR Pod E24 P2 Dr. Aaron French - US from the Future? Magic & Technology: Rosicrucians, Steiner, New Age & UFOs

In Part 2, Aaron and I look at different related threads that one encounters when delving into this topic; in particular, how Aaron's research ties into a topic that I had talked about last year with regard to the recent documentary-type show called 'Hellier' (specifically with regard to a man named Allen Greenfield). This links to high strangeness such as that seen in the book The Mothman Prophecies, but also ritual magick, and occulture at its finest. We try to make some sense out of all of this and ask how it all relates to the original case study of Steiner and Hynek. We then shift our attention to talk about the challenges that a researcher within academia faces when trying to explore topics that are considered 'controversial', as well as the backlash that a researcher might experience from the people being researched.

RR Podcast E24 P1 Dr. Aaron French - US from the Future? Magic & Technology: Rosicrucians, Steiner, New Age & UFOs

In Part 1, Aaron and I explore many different rabbit holes regarding esotericism and high strangeness. Aaron begins by expanding on his earlier presentations that he gave this year on this topic; he's looking at the relationship between technology and magic, and is asking, 'how does technology reenchant the world?' One area that we can find a lot of interesting material is the UFO-field. Aaron talks about his research findings regarding the links between Rudolf Steiner and J. Allen Hynek (a scientist who was working with the U.S. government in its project to study the UFO phenomena). From there, we look at the esoteric ideas linked with this topic, how they developed and have become assimilated into New Age thought surrounding the narratives and ideas found in the UFO field.

Eric's Perspective feat. Mark Steven Greenfield

Eric's Perspective feat. Mark Steven Greenfield

In this episode, Eric speaks with artist Mark Steven Greenfield; about his journey and education in the arts and the great artists who mentored him. They discuss his experience of growing up and living in the Philippines and Germany and how that shaped his outlook on life and ideas of racism and oppression. They discuss his body of work that deals with themes such as  African American stereotypes, spiritual practices, social justice, meditative practices and  abstraction. The life of an artist, the importance of craft, the need to find a way to support their passion and the delicate balance of making a living and staying true to one's artistic integrity. Greenfield's thought-provoking and controversial series "Blackatcha" and his intention of 'reappropriating the appropriated' in order to neutralize the effects of racist stereotypes, his most recent work focuses on the mystery surrounding “The Black Madonna”. They discuss the role of the artist in society and the power of art to make an impact for generations to come.

Lisa Elliott: Professional Learning With Voice and Choice

Lisa Elliot has deep roots in her school district—she’s spent over 29 years as a teacher, principal, and now superintendent in Greenfield School District. Nestled in the suburbs of Milwaukee, Greenfield ISD includes a student body that speaks over 40 different languages within just six schools.

To make sure her district is the ideal place to meet the needs of both its students and its teachers, Elliot has reworked the very fabric of her district using the Understanding by Design framework. This has meant rethinking professional learning and intentionally choosing language that is both meaningful and empowering.

In this episode, Elliot shares how her district is backward planning to be a district where teachers and students thrive as leaders and learners.

How Bosch Took a Dumb SKIL Drill Press and Made it 'Smart'

How Bosch Took a Dumb SKIL Drill Press and Made it 'Smart'

At the end of the day, everyone just wants to make more money. That was the message at the Factory of the Future experience at the Bosch Rexroth Automation & Electrification facility in Hoffman Estates, IL.

According to Peter Fischbach, industry segment manager at Bosch Rexroth, 70 percent of machines on the factory floor are not connected at all. The situation provides a huge opportunity to make machines more transparent (and profitable) using data, but one of the common misconceptions is that if you want the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) or Industry 4.0, you have to buy new equipment.

To demonstrate how manufacturers can connect legacy machines, the company took a SKIL drill press and added some sensors as well as the company’s IoT Gateway. The upgrade enabled them to start pulling data from an otherwise dumb or “brownfield” machine and use it in real time.

“Brownfield” equipment is a term used for legacy equipment that is otherwise unconnected and “greenfield” refers to a new facility that is starting from scratch.

The team added an acceleration sensor to monitor motor and spindle speed as well as the ability to monitor pressing force and drill temperature with an edge-connected device. All-in, they added about $2,000 worth of  technology to the press.

The data is routed through Bosch’s IoT Gateway which has the ability to pull data from multiple disparate devices and then deploy it to a database where it can be used for anything, including predictive maintenance, data analytics, etc.

For the demo, the data was pulled into IoT Insights, analysis software that comes pre-installed on the IoT Gateway. It provides a dashboard for the user to view all live-streaming data in one place for up to 20 machines. The user can set the dashboard to monitor spikes in quality problems.

The SKIL example shows a plug-and-play option for OEMs that want to get rolling with an IIoT solution. According to Fischbach, any company can start small and build up to the "factory of the future" using existing brownfield machines.

According to Matteo Dariol, once companies have the data, a common problem is end user follow up. Dariol says that to understand what's going on, companies need to have the right people looking at the right data.

IoT is confusing and a lot of people don't know where to start. Bosch thinks that they can not only help scale towards IoT functionality, but they have the legacy application expertise as well.

Fischbach says that a lot of factories have no insight at all, and for a few thousand dollars of technology, they can change that. After all, at the end of the day, everyone just wants to make more money.

Oh, and the company made a rap marketing video, so there’s that too. #LikeABosch
