Stomping Grounds Preview | Who will ref Rollins v Corbin? Joe v Ricochet match of the night? Will Bayley drop the title?
The Lock Up team are back in the studio and fill their boots as they look ahead to Stomping Grounds. Seven WWE titles are on the line on Sunday night and the guys break down every match on the card. The pair contemplate the superb build-up this week for the SmackDown women’s title match and Roman Reigns’ clash with Drew McIntyre with egomaniac Shane McMahon by his side. We also look at the ‘styles clash’ nature of the potentially show-stealing contest between Samoa Joe and Ricochet. There’s also a healthy discussion of the merits of Heavy Machinery’s Otis and random dishwasher-related chat about Becky Lynch and Seth Rollins.

    Sounds and Grounds Music Series

    Sounds and Grounds Music Series

On this episode of the Life in the Carolinas podcast, we welcome Zack Brewer, attorney at Brewer & Brewer by day and band seeker/producer of Sounds and Grounds on nights and weekends. As mentioned on the previous episode of the podcast (season 2 episode 6), Sounds and Grounds is held once per month at Talia Espresso, and Zack aims to secure unique and diverse bands to play in downtown North Wilkesboro, many for the first time.

Zack grew up surrounded by music, attending MerleFest almost every year and being exposed to the incredible musicians that the Wilkes County area has to offer. He emphasizes that Boone and Appalachian State University are home to many talented musicians, and he has attended more than a few of their concerts. Through Sounds and Grounds, Zack is hoping to broaden the genres that are represented in the region and bring together the community to experience the diverse and high-quality performances in a cozy atmosphere at Talia. In fact, Jim and Kathy have been creating custom coffee drinks for each event, and this is a tradition they hope to continue.

It is important to Zack that these events spotlight new talent as well as provide consistent opportunities for fellowship among the community. He hopes that Sounds and Grounds will continue to grow, incorporating even more genres and potentially partnering with some local breweries as well. The slogan for Sounds and Grounds is “Where Creativity Creates Community”, and they are certainly well on their way to living this out.

    Last Seen...Playing Dungeons and Dragons

    Last Seen...Playing Dungeons and Dragons

You leave Radigast City at the break of dawn, traveling north until reaching an unnamed river. For days, the water is your guide as lush earth gives way to dreary moors and tangled thickets. Finally, in the distance, you see a white plume of smoke rising from a mountain in the distance.

Two miles from the volcano, you find a suitable cave in which to store your supplies.

"Dead Knoll's Eye Socket," your guide says. "This is where I take leave. Good luck."

With your traveling gear stored safely away, you make your way along unsettled the land, being careful to avoid any fissures venting steam. Levi, the party's thief, is the first to hear the mountain breathing. Once you all hear it, you realize it comes in a cycle: a thirty-second exhale of heat followed by a half minute of calm. The cave your guide said to seek now lies before you, about eight feet in diameter.

Suddenly, the whooshing breath of White Plume Mountain almost knocks you over. The torch Bautigan the Brave readied is extinguished by the blast of air. You have thirty seconds before the next wave of wind and steam comes your way.

    What do you do?

Dungeons and Dragons. In the 80s, many claimed it was a tool of Satan. Today, it's a mainstream staple of pop culture. It's also this week's topic of Men in Gorilla Suits...

    * * *

We roll initiative and discuss when we first became aware of Dungeons and Dragons (D&D). After that, we talk about when we played...and if we still play today.

We talk about why D&D has endured for 45 years...and how technology has affected the game in recent years.

Because we are geeks, we devote some time to our favorite D&D monsters, player classes, and races.

We mentioned the Satanic Panic of the 1980s, which many claimed was the worst thing about D&D. It never came to be (because there was nothing to worry about), but that doesn't stop us from chatting about the worst thing playing D&D can do to a person.

Dungeons and Dragons has become a pop culture staple, and we talk about our favorite appearance of the game in something we've watched or listened to.

And we wrap up this episode with two things:

    1. Our favorite D&D memories.
    2. What the future holds for D&D

DARK TOURISM & A CHAT WITH DAN FROM SEOUL EATS

DARK TOURISM & A CHAT WITH DAN FROM SEOUL EATS

Welcome to the Travelman Podcast, my name is Ben and I host a pretty cool travel podcast. I’ve travelled to many parts in the world and I share my experiences with others.

Today on the podcast I want to talk about a few people I met in Seoul and Taipei when I was there just a few weeks ago, and some exciting travel orientated stuff for next year and a very interesting topic called Dark Tourism.

I have some audio recorded from Dan’s phone. Dan was our Korean food guide, he has a successful blog called Seoul Eats. In the recording, he talks to Mandy and I about Korean street food and an interesting game Korean’s play before they eat.

Also, in about a few hours’ time we'll have a new addition to the household. A baby kitten. I’m a bit scared about how my current cat Miyu will react to it. Hopefully she’s okay.

I’ve watched the YouTube videos on how to introduce a kitten to an older cat so things should be okay.

004 Burial Grounds, Death and the Ancients

004 Burial Grounds, Death and the Ancients

Segment 1- Mindie – BURIAL GROUNDS – DEATH AND THE ANCIENTS

Death is the ultimate connection to the landscape.

Experiencing of Death and birth. Both are beginnings and ends of life cycles

It seems the ancient people of Western Europe may have articulated this concept in their passage tombs. Sometimes they resemble a womb … with the earth as the mother.

Thin places are places where we mark beginning and ends. These are sacred times. Fitting to be remembered and memorialized in sacred spaces.

In this next segment, Archaeologist Michael Moylan takes us to a burial ground in Connemara long forgotten. He uncovers a few graves and talks a little about the burial process in that region.

    SEGMENT 2 - GUEST INTERVIEW

Michael Moylan is an archaeologist and tour operator from County Galway who invited me today to visit him on a small exploration of some graves that seem to be washing away at a place called Storm Beach. It is located just behind the Connemara Regional Airport I County Galway. Michael has unearthed some graves and discussed their age and some other specifics as well as some wonderful destinations to visit in Ireland.

    Welcome to Connemara

NOTE: Michael Moylan did alert the people of the community around Storm Beach to come consider taking care of these gravesites that were washing away, distributing bones along the beaches.

SEGMENT 3 - SITE REVIEW Omey IsLand

Omey Island – off the western edge of Connemara in County Galway. Accessible at low tide only. You can walk or drive across the strand onto the island. Tides are high so be aware that at certain times of the year, the tide can come in quickly and be high enough to cover a vehicle.

SIGHT AND PERCEPTIONS – the island is very old.

    • According to the Irish Central Statistics Office, there is no one left living full time on the island anymore.

    • The weather is dramatic – especially the wind

    • There were people living on Omey Island thousands of years ago. It was also believed to be the last holdout of paganism in Ireland.

    • St. Feichin was seventh century saint who founded a monastic settlement on Omey Island. He later went on to found several other settlements including Fore Abbey in co. Meath which is what he’s most famous for. But he started here on Omey. Nothing is left of his original settlement on Omey, but it continued to foster a Christian community well into the Medieval times, and there are ruins from that community.

    • There’s a large bowl-shaped out impression on a hillside in Omey Island, and in the center of it are the ruins of a Medieval church. This is likely where St. Feichin had his monastery and the ruins are of a later church. The church ruins and remnants of the community were buried in the sand – the wind is very strong. The hole or depression that you now see the church ruin sitting in shows how it was excavated in 1981 after being buried in the sand. Surrounding the area is a semi sunken village – foundations from stone huts, occupied by islanders were also discovered. The village was wiped out during the Famine. The wind literally blew the sand over the little village and the church.

    • I took a tour of Omey Island with the archaeologist, Michael Mullen who works with Michael Moylan. I asked him about the famine and how it hit Omey. I asked if there was a massive evacuation and he said that often times, families just closed the doors to their cottages and laid down and died.

    • Omey is one of the wild places where nature is reclaiming the landscape. We went in May and noticed all the wildflowers. The old graveyard was nearly covered in Primrose.

    • Omey Island has a mystical quality about it in all its harshness and wild beauty. It’s worth a visit. Check the tides before venturing. Even walking along the hard sand causeway at low tide is worth the visit.

    SEGMENT 4 – MINDIE RECCOMENDS

Hidden Messages in Water by Dr. Masaru Emoto – written in 2001. Through high speed photography demonstrated how frozen water crystals changed when exposed to concentrated thought. The thoughts were sometimes spoken – even written – communicated in many languages. But as the thoughts changed, the crystal shapes and vibrancy changed. The book expands to discuss water and our connection to it and our intimate connection with all life and some amazing experiments that show that we can communicate with nature in a way to heal the land and heal ourselves.
