National Parks Traveler Podcast | National Park Guidebooks

With nearly 430 units in the National Park System, of which 63 are National Parks, we all probably could use a little help in planning our adventures into the park system. But do you simply visit a park’s website to plan your trip? Find an online guidebook? Buy a hardcover guidebook? Or simply wing it when you reach your destination?

This is Kurt Repanshek, your host at the National Parks Traveler. I must confess, I’ve taken all three approaches, and I’ve even written a guidebook to the parks, and there’s probably a fair amount of guidebook material on the Traveler.

Today we’re reaching out to two writers who make their living writing national park guidebooks. Becky Lomax is the author of “USA National Parks: The Complete Guide to All 63 National Parks” from Moon Travel Guides, as well as her latest titles “Best of Glacier, Banff and Jasper: Make the Most of One to Three Days in the Parks”, which she co-wrote with Andrew Hempstead, and “Glacier National Park: Hiking, Camping, Lakes, and Peaks”.

Michael Oswald is the author of “Your Guide to the National Parks”, “National Park Maps: An Atlas of United States National Parks”, and “The Day Hiker’s Guide to the National Parks”.

National Parks Traveler Podcast | Stone Road Press and The National Parks

There are seemingly endless guides to exploring the national parks: Moon, National Geographic, Lonely Planet, and various other corporate publishers. Indeed, it’s rare these days that you find a writer who takes on the role of both guidebook author and publisher.

Most of these guidebooks take the same approach: a nice overview of the park in question, followed by a breakdown of places to stay, where to eat, things to do, nearby attractions. Mike Oswald is swimming against the current with his park guidebooks.

First he came out with “Your Guide to the National Parks,” a thick, hefty volume that has won awards from the Independent Book Publishers Association. Along with the usual park basics, he fills his chapters with history, maps that point out some of his favorite hikes and don’t-miss attractions, some details on plants and animals, a suggested vacation planner, and of course, full-color photographs of some iconic settings.

Today we’re sitting down with Mike to discuss not only his decision to “go independent against those giants in the guidebook publishing world," but also his latest park-related projects.

A Valentine’s Day Treat: Wizard of Ads Founder Roy H. Williams on His Newest Venture

A Valentine’s Day Treat: Wizard of Ads Founder Roy H. Williams on His Newest Venture

Although officially, the business spotlighted on this week’s podcast is less than a week old, host Dean Rotbart says that given its lineage and the marketing genius supporting it, RomanticSpotsinAustin.com is a sure bet to be an entrepreneurial role model and a global success story.

Two years in development, the online guidebook to amorous Austin, Texas, is the brainchild of Pennie Williams, brought from the drawing board to last week’s rollout with an assist by her son Jake and her husband, none other than Roy H. Williams.

Pennie has been nurturing love and romance for decades. She is responsible for launching Chapel Dulcinea — the world’s first free wedding chapel — in 2005. Situated cliffside on the edge of an ancient walking trail overlooking the Texas Hill Country, the chapel hosts 1,100 ceremonies annually.

RomanticSpotsinAustin offers searchable, unbiased descriptions of a cornucopia of places and activities — from famous landmarks to little-known hideaways, sweeping natural landscapes to rooftop lounges, crazy art and adventures to violins and candlelight. Listings on RomanticSpotsinAustin.com are free and selected for inclusion solely by the editorial team behind the digital guidebook.

“Visitors to RomanticSpotsinAustin.com need only be guided by their mood of the moment, whether that means hiking the cliffs at sunset, sharing cocktails at a dark corner table, or touring any of Austin’s outstanding museums,” says Jake Williams, who serves as chief executive of the new venture. “The only essential ingredient, of course, is that you have the one you love by your side.”

Listen closely, as this week Roy not only explains the strategy behind RomanticSpotsinAustin, but he also shares some of the proven marketing techniques that have made him the most successful and admired ad writer in history.

National Parks Traveler Podcast | Exploring the Oregon Trail

National Parks Traveler Podcast | Exploring the Oregon Trail

It is one of the longest units of the National Park System in the country. "It," of course, is the Oregon National Historic Trail, which stretches more than 2,100 miles from Missouri to Oregon. It’s been estimated that between 1840 and 1860 some 300,000-400,000 men, women, and children embarked on the four-month-long trip to head to the West Coast.

A new book, “Exploring The Oregon Trail, America's Historic Road Trip,” can help you explore sections of the trail, or the entire trail if you have the time. It was written by Kay and David Scott, longtime national park travelers and park lodging experts.

Communicate with Trees, Unlock Their Magic, & Help Save Them

Communicate with Trees, Unlock Their Magic, & Help Save Them
We’ve heard a lot about the benefits of trees for our physical and emotional health and well-being. Did you know that trees are also healers and magical spiritual beings? Some trees are as old as 9000 years, and they communicate with each other through their roots. Here is what Dr. Kac Young says about the book she’ll be talking about on my show: “I am so excited about my new book Magical Trees: A Guidebook for Finding the Magic in Everyday Trees using Crystals, Spells, Essential Oils and Rituals. Now is the time for this book to reach as many people as we can. The message in this book is personal and global. Trees need to be loved and sustained because they are so important to the body and soul of humans and to the longevity of our planet. In this book I outline everything we need to know about 50 trees and how we can use them for healing, magic, rituals, and sustenance. I hope you will join me in celebrating the wonder of trees, their priceless gifts and the knowledge we can share about how very special they truly are. Without trees humans cannot survive.” Please join us next Thursday to learn about how to communicate with trees, unlock their magic, and help save them from extinction.

#36: Open source authoring: creating a new CMS guidebook

#36: Open source authoring: creating a new CMS guidebook

Writing a TYPO3 Guidebook as a Collective Effort

With upwards of 600 features, writing about a fully featured, open source CMS like TYPO3 can be a challenge. In this episode, Felicity Brand, Heather McNamee, and Jeffrey A. McGuire talk about how they co-authored a TYPO3 guidebook in concert with the TYPO3 community.

    The need for this guidebook

As Jeffrey A. McGuire tells it, TYPO3 wanted a book for a diverse audience, ranging from developers, newbies, project analysts, students, educators, integrators, and digital agencies. He explains that while getting the commission to write the book, “They told us there hasn’t been a book for beginners for a while, and we’ve got this idea that our system is ready to get back out into the world.”

Every huge task is made up of smaller steps

A book is an enormous project, and it can be hard to know where to start. But as Felicity Brand says, “Writing a book is just like any other writing task. We put a lot of effort into planning at the start. You create a guide, a framework, and then you start putting these building blocks in place.” Heather McNamee says at Open Strategy Partners, they try to approach every task, even big ones like this guidebook, “the same way you eat an elephant, one bite at a time.”

The strength of the TYPO3 community contributed to their success

All three guests today acknowledge how much the strength of the TYPO3 community helped them in the creation of this guidebook.

    • Large, well-established, active, and diverse. Heather says, “We really couldn’t have done it without the subject-matter-experts, the incredible documentation team, and the people who blog about TYPO3.”
    • Welcoming to newcomers. As Heather puts it, “The TYPO3 community is ready to scale,” and they actively reach out to help onboard beginners and stakeholders.
    • Leadership is accessible and approachable. Despite being new to the TYPO3 community, Felicity was able to speak with leadership directly to research this guidebook.
    •  The community gives back. The TYPO3 community actively supports and contributes to other important projects that many of us rely on like PHP Unit, Symfony, and Composer.

    What’s next for TYPO3 in 2021

TYPO3 CMS has more big plans to start 2021 off right. Says Felicity, “For version 11 the big push is accessibility, usability, and improved developer experience with making sure upgrades are really smooth and easy.”
