Is The Fitness Industry Letting Us Down?

Is The Fitness Industry Letting Us Down?

In a world where are obsessed with health and fitness, why are we as a society, becoming less and less well?

Our mental health is at an all time low and longevity may be rising, but aged 'wellness' is generally declining?!

In todays episode I talk with friend, fellow fitness professional, health psychologist and wellness advocate, Heather Lilley. After becoming ill herself by following a regimented 'clean eating' and brutal training regime, Heather started her own journey into wellness V's fitness. A topic we share passionately.

I hope you enjoy our chat into so many aspects of this subject. Please do have a read of her book Enough Already  This really is one for you if you are dabbling with the concept that training and diet alone isn't getting you where you need to be.

This was a chat that was filled with honesty and openness.

The Psychology of Healthy Living w/ Heather Hausenblas

The Psychology of Healthy Living w/ Heather Hausenblas

Heather joins me to talk about psychology being a big part of a healthy lifestyle. What we say to ourselves is important but also how we view ourselves in comparison to others (or our ideal version we have for ourselves) is a big piece of our health.

Some key thoughts we need to consider when approaching a healthy lifestyle change:

    • How well you know yourself
    • How honest you are with where you are and where you need to be
    • How small changes in your diet/exercise are often better than massive changes
    • What works for others might not work for us
    • We are human, we will make mistakes and it's ok, get back on track as soon as you can
    • The difference between food deserts and food swamps - what does your community look like

She explains the importance of the work of Wellness Discover Labs validating the claims of some of the products on the market. Third party testing like this is a crucial piece we should all look for in the products we purchase.

Heather Hausenblas, PhD is the CEO of Wellness Discovery Labs, an award winning researcher, a professor, and a best selling author. She is ranked in the top 1% of most influential scientists in the world (PLOS Biology). Check out her books and journals here.

Health Psychology Fosters Wellness for the Body and Mind

Health Psychology Fosters Wellness for the Body and Mind

Living a healthy life is more than just eating the “right” foods and doing the “right” exercises, especially because these things may look different depending on your culture. Health Psychology is a way of looking at wellness in a whole new way that involves fulfilling the needs of both the mind and body. The faculty coordinator for Antioch’s BA Health Counseling and Psychology, Lynn Dhanak, joins us for a conversation about how understanding health psychology and focusing on strength-based approaches could have a profound impact on how we view wellness in our society.

To learn more about the BA in Health Counseling & Psychology that Lynn teaches in visit our website antioch.edu.

Lean into the fear of change

Lean into the fear of change

Dr Aneta Kotevski is a Principal Clinical & Health Psychologist who leads a growing and diverse private practice at Bluff Road Psychology in Sandringham. This flourishing practice is supported by a team of psychologists who utilise evidence-based treatment approaches assisting children, adolescents, and adults.  After completing her Doctorate in Health Psychology in 2008 at the University of Melbourne, Aneta’s interest in the relationship between mental and physical health led her to work in rehabilitation settings at various hospitals across Victoria.

Aneta is passionate about working with individuals presenting with chronic illness and psychological disorders, such as anxiety and depression.  Her client objectives are to help people understand the psychological and behavioural factors that impact on their disease outcomes, quality of life and wellbeing. This in turn assists people to develop coping skills and better ways to cultivate a rich and meaningful life. Aneta practices mindfulness for her own wellbeing, is a compassionate and collaborative therapist, and enjoys mentoring and clinically supervising psychologists in the profession.

We discuss how she helps people go about the process of negotiating the fears, anxieties and insecurities in their lives to help them enjoy a better quality of living. Aneta encourages people to lean into the fear of change. In other words, she wants them to get excited about trying new things so as to enjoy the wonderful things that will happen in their lives as a result. I  know you will get a lot out of this podcast, so please... enjoy.

Obesity & Weight Loss: Circadian Rhythms, Depression, Bariatric Surgery and More

Obesity & Weight Loss: Circadian Rhythms, Depression, Bariatric Surgery and More

How can we stop uncontrollable and unintentional weight gain?  What can we do about it, what works and how do we stick to it?   Should those with serious weight problems consider bariatric surgery and medication?

I recently learned so much about obesity from incredibly informed health psychologist Dr. Dina Goldstein Silverman.  After watching her excellent presentation at the 2020 NJPA Conference I asked her if she would be a guest on podcast.  We are joined in this conversation by attorney and my husband, Neill W. Clark.

Expert guest Dr. Dina Goldstein Silverman is the recipient of the Frank and Mary Ann Dattilio Education Award from the Pennsylvania Psychological Association. She was recently recognized by South Jersey Magazine for the Reader's Choice Award in 2019 and 2017.  She is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Psychology at Cooper University Hospital where she teaches evidence-based psychotherapy and provides individual supervision to psychiatry residents, medical students, and post-doctoral and pre-doctoral clinical health psychology residents.
